Clarification: Thanks for those that have pointed this out; Matt Booty was the General Manager of the Midway Chicago Office in the 2000s, then the Senior Vice President during Stranglehold's development. He only became the CEO of the entire company in 2008 as Midway was already starting it's downward spiral.

Don't think I didn't notice Concord hiding out in the trash bin! 😉 Also, Matt clarified on Twitter that a Concord episode won't be coming our way anytime soon, as he is not only waiting to see if Concord either returns in some form down the line or is well and truly dead, but he's also waiting on more details about how the core development went. I know a lot of people want to see a What Happened episode of Concord, but I appreciate and respect Matt's desire to take a wait and see approach and not rush out such an episode with all due speed. Better for him to wait for the full story to come out (if it ever does) than to have it rushed out way too soon!

An example is there are bad movies on purpose to lose money even though they have superstars. Because of insurance and other loopholes a movie becomes far more profitable losing money than trying to be a successful movie will ever get them.

I gotta respect the game director trying his best to limit the amount of crunch. It fails horribly but back then crunch was nearly just accepted in the industry so a studio trying to go against that toxic work management is a bit ahead of it's time.
@madams22394 ай бұрын
It's got "we tried" vibes and I think they ment it. The crunch is inevitable, due to how group projects work, unless you have a solid timeframe with good time management. EA takes advantage of this, wait until ideas are on table and presented; then step on the gas and hope for the best. To be the *opposite* of EA should be noted.

9:00 If anyone without software experience is wondering : Merging in changes to your engine every three months is a recipe for disaster. So much can change in that amount of time, both on your end and theirs! This means you need to spend additional time fixing massive amounts of merge conflicts and just plain broken stuff. I'm not sure how often Epic was pushing changes to merge in for UE3, but best practice is to merge them in as often as you can so you can quickly react to the changes as they come in. This results in much less time lost overall, because changes are much more incremental and thus way easier to deal with. Basically, the more time passes, the more TH's version of the engine and Epic's would diverge and the more differences between them, the harder it is to merge everything correctly. Now, of course, if your project is near completion and you don't need the changes at this point, you can skip them. But, otherwise, pick the version of the engine you want and make sure to update frequently.
@theLikou15 ай бұрын
The video says that Epic was not very good at keeping the developers up to date with the newest versions.
@ichijofestival25764 ай бұрын
Merging every time there's a change sounds like a horrible idea, at least in my little realm of development. Depending on the frequency, you could find yourself on a constant treadmill of going back and fixing things you already had working, significantly slowing any progress. You could easily merge your way into significant bugs that take hours/days/weeks to fix, only for the next update to either break the same code because it was in an awkward 'between state'-- possibly triggered by complaints from others facing the same problem-- or render your suffering worthless because they introduced a fix of their own. It risks introducing a massive amount of instability and frustration into the entire project, sometimes for pointless features irrelevant to your needs. I'd double down on that opinion if UE3 was indeed in such a precarious state-- and from the sounds of it, poorly documented. Games, particularly in the early days of the PS3, were relatively static products that didn't need to be constantly kept up-to-date. Depending on what the later versions had to offer, they could've made the decision to ship with an "outdated" version to no real consequence.
@madams22394 ай бұрын
@@ichijofestival2576Can't confirm 1st hand, but theres other games that run on UE3 with similar complaints. The big issue appears to be the company that made UE3, Epic, seems to had essentially bitten off more then they could chew; the engine's popularity had grown ceaseless for the last decade which might be why they literally dropped the ball on multiple projects. They also seemed to switch from being a software engine company to conglomerate and from my own experience that always results in loss of knowledge and slows transfer of information. I'd compare it to buying support for a program, "you get someone all the time, any day!" Then when you use it it's always a bot call and never sends you support you need. Nintendo had *a support line* for this if you were a dev, UE3 support seems to have failed hard here.

I loved this game! I was already a HK movie fanboy, so this was a day one purchase. If I remember correctly, this was supposed to be a 360 launch title or very close to the beginning of it’s cycle. I vaguely remember going into a GameStop and seeing this trailer when they were selling three 360s right at the beginning.

I don't remember if they gave it away free for a bit, or if it was just heavily discounted, but as soon as I saw Stranglehold on GOG I snatched it up. I've never actually played the game yet, but I always had it in the back of my mind.
