Webbing on backpacks and tactical gear can get out of hand fast. Pretty soon it just looks like a yard sale with webbing hanging off all over. While you can approach it different ways such as taping down or cutting off excess webbing, how about something that stacks functions?
By using a old bike tire, from a road bike, about 1 1/8" wide, we can created basically rubber bands. These work perfectly to get loose 1" webbing out of the way and at the same time still give us easy access to adjust and a added benefit.
If you ever saw my video on the Bike Tube Hack, you'll know that inner tubes burn really well. They are great emergency fire starters. If you get in a bind out in the mountains or woods, you can pull a few off of the webbing and light them on fire to buy you time to get other tinder burning. Pretty handy if you're in a tight spot.
Check your local bike shop for all the old tires you could ever use.

Found this video just as I threw a punctured tube, dang it! Will keep this in mind if another breaks though, awesome tip!!

They’re basically homemade “Ranger bands”. I’ve gone to my bike shops and motorcycle shops and got their throw away tubes in various diameters. I’ve got an empty 40 lb dog food bag full of bands of different widths and diameters. Another bag of big rubber tubes from the local tire shop that caters mainly to the local agricultural community. I had been using the ranger bands for a while, but it was just a couple years ago that I saw a video on how long burning the rubber tubes are and I’ve carried em ever since. Great wet weather flame extender. You did a great show n tell here.

Such a simple hack! I really like how you showed two uses for essentially a piece of trash and I bet there are a lot more things you can do with it. Nicely done.

I randomly stumbled onto your video. I've been repurposing my inner tubes for years for exactly this use on packs and military kit (as well as some others) since they are alternative to Ranger bands. I didn't think it was actually a thing others did.

Pretty awesome hack. I had thought about using those bfg covers for hk hooks. This honestly is much more useful. I'd try it tomorrow, but I just packed 95% of my gear into boxes in preparation for moving. When I unbox it all, this will happen. Thanks for the inspiration man!

.....ever looked into the Euro/ Brit-Commonwealth concept of the Smock? Not too many reviews of those...at least not in American English...lol....got into them back in the 90's and recently got back into them...have tried UK DPM windproof, Para and SAS variants, the more recent SORD versions and the Vertx take on them....regret not hanging on to the First Spear version but deemed it too warm for Nevada...anyhoes just throwing it out there. That guy Diz on LF forum has really great ideas on kit, rucks and mods..if you ever run out of new ideas to review...
@KitBadger

You know, while I know of smocks, I've never tried any. I may have to give one a go sometime. And thanks for the tip on LF, I might have to look him up.

@@KitBadger ..the .most readily available one is from SORD and to my opinion the most cost effective one if you don't want a used one around 180 to 225 dollars...the Arktis in various variants Kommando or Mountain variants direct or from e bay UK. Leo Kohler KSK smock on the high end Euro side...MFH on the low end side both pop up on Amazon or ebay....the cheapest good ones are used UK MTP from ebay or Varusteleka 60 to 80 bucks or so...the most technically up to date are the First Spear Squadron Smock (500 bucks) and the Tyr Tactical Huron...1k yup 1k $$...the UK equivalent is the Level Peaks SF Smock...errrr unless Uncle Sugar is buying I don't think so...almost forgot on the completely civilian side there's Varusteleka and Fjallraven... Think of a Smock as a wearable go bag that can also be a good weather she'll that's not waterproof but a breathable and stealthier alternative to goretex. The Vertx Smock kinda splits the difference but sadly has been discontinued..last I checked are running around 315 or so bucks...really hard to find....really glad I got mine back when they were available...for around 180....its a lot like a level 5 ECWCS with a better layout and more pockets..and built in 6x rifle mag capacity ( AK/AR10/AR15). The SORD has 11 pockets mostly sized to fit 2x 308 rifle mags with room to spare....
