This is my method for making strapless dresses with boned bodices. There's other ways to do it was well. You can either follow mine completely, or take the parts you like and combine them with other methods to make it work for you. Happy sewing!

Thank you for your help, so kind of you. I’m getting but old for fancy work these days but my grandchildren are asking for engagement party, and yr 12 formal outfits 😵‍💫. Of course they dont have patterns for me. This formal dress is pre knee operation needs to be done before end July. Boning never don’t that before, I found your part 1 just fantastic, it looks great, making my job heaps easier. It is a wonderful feeling being creative, providing not too many complications. I wish you well in your life’s venture. Best wishes .

Thank you so much for this tutorial! It is so helpful and watching you work is a dream! I’ve watched so many tutorials that are either extremely boring or chaotic and riddled with error. I sincerely enjoyed watching this and it has made my own experience sewing much more pleasant!

Thank you so much. I try to keep my tutorials as informative and clear as possible (which isn't always easy when there's a lot of explaining to do!) so it's great to hear feedback like this 🙂

May i ask if you would keep the lining skirt and the main sequinned skirt if this dress had a slit in it. Im trying to imagine how you would compensate if client wanted a slit. Because i prefer lining especially with sequinned fabric too but i cant wrap my head around how you would do it.

What interfacing did you use to line the bodice and bodice lining? Will using interfacing prevent a more form-fitting bodice from stretching along with the wearer’s breathing?

Super useful tutorial, thank you! One question: How would you add the boning if you wanted it to be visible? I'm planning to make a dress with a bodice that looks like a corset, and I'm not 100% sure how to execute it. My guess: I sew the boning or boning channels inside the top layer instead of the lining, so that stiched lines holding the boning in place are visible. Otherwise I do everything the same as you. Does that sound reasonable?

This was SO helpful and informative. Thank you! If you had a fairly weighty fabric on the outside like brocade, what kind of linings would you use on the inside, and boning layer? And would you still interface the boning layer? Thx!
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful. Even if your outside fabric is fairly heavy, you'll still need something heavier than a lining fabric for the inside layer as it needs to have the bones attached to it, so I would still interface the lining layer. Hope that helps

Is there a specific needle required for boning... I haven't sewn for a long Time and I'm just about to attempt a dress for a drag queen friend.
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 жыл бұрын
I just use a regular needle and sew a little slower than normal. A slightly longer stitch can help too. Sewing boning can blunt your needle, so make sure you switch to a new one when you go back to sewing the fabric so it doesn't catch. I often keep older needles that switch in just for sewing the boning. Hope that helps. Have fun sewing the dress for your friend 🙂
