Made all the more powerful by knowledge that this was basically the final performance of SYL before Devin dismantled the band, shaved his head, and moved on to the next phase in his life. Almost brings a tear to the eye. He knew when it was time to say goodbye to this persona, and quit on a high point - never letting SYL get stale. An inspiration for all of us, musician or otherwise, to always move forward. Never get trapped by the past.

But your friends better have thanked you for showing them what good music actually is. Never heard of Nickolas Barker? Since I've been playin deathmetal drums for the last 10 years I can say that the faster you play the smaller muscles you use, and after a while those muscles become so used to that same motion that you learn how to move fast with minimal effort, just like a twitch in you limbs. scientists have compared high speed drumming to competing in proffesional athletics, but if calorie intake is larger than the output, one is going to pile on some pounds.

One of the many things that make me love Devin is the fact that I never heard him talk about his bipolar (disease) as something that makes him the (great) artist he is. I'm sure that what makes him a great musician, and also a great person, is the fact that he faced his fears and his mental illness. That's why he's one of the best in this genre (and not).
@windriderrr8 жыл бұрын
He very indirectly admitted that his condition makes him great when he stopped taking treatment on purpose to write Alien. Anyway I think he's going to be talking about it in his upcoming book.
@ShaneS1016 жыл бұрын
I actually saw him with the Devin Townshend Project this last weekend and had made mention of how bizarre it is to suffer from a fear of people (who are fundamentally terrifying), then saying fuck it, getting on stage, and pretending to be a metal-singer. His commentary between songs was awesome to a first-time listener.

Sounds like a feature to you, but typically leads people to suicide. He has evolutionalized greatly by controlling it with medication, for musical evolution, his family balance and of course for his own sanity. Great musician!

If you watch his episode of Fact or Fiction, he talks about how he was misdiagnosed with Bi Polar disorder. He stopped taking his medication before recording Alien but continued to use drink and drugs and that tipped him over the edge. He says since he got sober, "everything has been weirdly fine".

@guillaumeb6698 Жыл бұрын
The performance is great but to be honest I think he was starting to look kind of miserable at that time, moreover with the booger wandering on his face during the show. The "skullet" used to be more "flamboyant", like a lion mane if I may say (see Hultsfred show), overtime it turned into an unkept rasta thing. The New Black had its moment but felt forced. You could feel the end of SYL was coming. It was a shame for the other bandmembers who had been there since the beginning, but you can understand Devin couldn't scream the hell out of himself every day forever. It's cool that SYL got that brief moment of mainstream exposure before the end. Like a supernovae.
