Advanced Bannerlord Siege Tactics - Abandon The Walls!

Bannerlord generally gets a bad wrap for being too easy, but make no mistake there are several battles in every campaign that feel nigh-impossible to win. One of the channel subscribers came across such a battle in his recent campaign and sent me his save file. In this video, I'm going to show you how I won the siege with a single click, but more importantly go over several advanced tactics you can use in your own siege defense!

Beautiful tactic. I've always loves siege defenses since the original m&b but with the recent changes they seem impossible to win many times with huge armies vs tiny garrisons. One little detail I like though was winning a defense down to the last 10 men I had, and in victory instead of the usual cheering they drop to their knees and looked absolutely exhausted which was really cool and appropriate

One correction I'd recommend to this strategy is to change which side of the gate your melee/archer units are on. (From your sides perspective) You would ideally want your Infantry holding the right side of the gate. The reason for this is simple: Shields are held in the left hand. By forcing the enemy infantry to face their shields towards the walls while engaging your infantry, you open up their right side (no shield) to your archers. This will allow for maximum damage from your archers and should reduce your casualties overall.

Yes! That was bothering me too. When placing troops I always pay attention to shield infantry and archer positions (both mine and the enemy's). Play enough as a cavalry main and you'll never forget how important the shield position is.

This is nice. It reminds me that this was something the old Total War games used to account where the incoming missile fire was relative to shield position. Newer Total War games don't do this. It's now just a stat check for them, which is extremely weak sauce compared to what Old Creative Assembly used to do.

I was pretty shocked to see how well auto resolve does for sieges now, and feel like it is pretty unbalanced with the AI update making defense incredibly difficult. It is also pretty demoralizing to see the AI quickly handle something that I was yeeting myself off walls, taking command of ballistas, breaking lines, and doing other heroic shit just to fail at.

Dude i've been watching as many of your vids as i can, cause I bought game at end of early access (NOOB). But i find that your packing way to much info into long drawn out vids.. I'm not saying that's bad cause I've had a chuckle or 3 watching them. But maybe for arguments sake entertain the idea of a "Quickies with Strat" where you breakdown core elements of gameplay and mechanics into short vids of max 5 mins or less. Where its more point driven> why do (?)> best way to achieve (?)> is to do (?) And make it short and to the point. I know this might make the algorithm hate on you for view time, but ppl dont want to watch 15-30 min vids. You could maximise and add ppl viewing your content this way so when you do drop a long vid, most of the subs you got in "quickie" mode will stick around to watch

@@Strat-Guides I held half the walls :D On the right wall section I had one group of infantry on each side of the ladders, but standing a few meters back from the ladders to let the attackers get onto the wall and in the process get shot a bunch by my archers below. On the left it wasn't as straightforward because the ladders are on a tower that isn't easily defendable, but once they get up the attackers will try to rush the main door to open it. So I pulled my infantry back from the walls, put some archers in the courtyard to shoot enemies while they were walking on the walls above my troops, and put a shield wall at the bottom of the stairs close to the main door where the enemies were trying to get off the walls. It's something I learned from Total War, sometimes it's better to let enemies get on your walls and deal with them later. From there the main challenge was not to die, because as you pointed out in the vid, as soon as I died my troops started brainlessly rushing out to get decimated by fian champions (and my character started the battle with I think 65hp). It took me about 3 tries to figure out a good defensive strat, but then at least 4 more to execute said strat without dying :D I should specify that about 400 of the 500 defenders were my party, so only elite troops, mainly heavy axemen with a few heroic line breakers, all archers were veteran bowmen (but they were only about 20% of my force), and I had a few Druzhinik sparkled on top of that. I've had a few similar (although less hardcore) sieges since then, and I find that the best thing to do is generally to exploit the fact that your archers have unlimited arrows. I pull them off the walls and always put them below where the ladders are going to be, then I make sure I have one group of infantry on each side of the ladder to box enemies in as they arrive, but you gotta make sure your infantry isn't positioned right on the ladders otherwise they'll obscure the view for your archers and you'll loose that immense advantage. So always leave a few meters between the top of the ladders and your infantry, so that your archers get a clean shot on attackers. If you have a good castle (better than the one in this video) you can repel any number of attackers with a few hundred elite troops.

uhhh man complex maneuvers are so unnecessarily hard in this game. had some archers skirmishing the ai had like 5 cavalry units that charged. as soon as the cav passed through the formation the archers pulled a 180 and skirmished their way right into the enemy infantry which ate them alive. which one should you run from Tale Worlds? the horsemen who your archers otherwise totally ignore shooting at, or the slow advancing shield wall of infantry that they wont stop shooting at. the logic on display here is peerless.

It's interesting that, in Total War (Rome 2 and Attila, at least) you're also better off abandoning the walls and placing your units just behind them. Maybe video games are just bad at simulating wall defense?

I was wondering if you could make a video or had any advice on reinforcement waves during combat… how they work, what to watch out for, and spawn locations… One minute I’m routing the enemy and then all of a sudden they spawn cavalry and archers and I’m losing… a Strat guide by you could be so helpful… it’d be great if spawn waves could be turned off completely, but a vid by you would definitely help with not getting destroyed by this. After watching this video I not only gained more confidence in play but became more proactive in my campaigns. I though it was impossible to win against an army of 1000, I really didn't think I could do it. But after this I tried the tactic. 200 vs 1100 (not exact numbers), and a couple of tries and I did it! Was about to do a slightly modified version of this, as my first run sucked. Almost 500 hours in-game, and I think this is my third or fourth fief. Forgot to build siege equipment(first mistake), poor placement of troops(second mistake), and not enough defenders(just took Lageta, I hate when AI controls my troops, as they seem to kill half my people when I would lose maybe 10%). As I was just about to start my second attempt, Caladog decided to propose peace to the West, so of course I abstained to save those 20 points as it was at 100%. At least I now have an idea for next time. Time to go get me an Empirical wife.

I dont understand why in sieges part of my army just do whatever they want, doesnt matter if I change from scatter to line but some of them dont follow my lead at all. Also sometimes moving my infrantry around the shield wall decides to turn their back to enemies for whatever reason. They're positioned all right, I move them a bit and I see red, go check and they've their back to archers. It's a bit infuriating to me to try anything more fancy in sieges in battles that doesnt happen at all.

Wow. With this tactic, I was able to defend castles and towns, even when massively outnumbered. Talking about 250 vs 1000 to 1500 enemies. Just gotta endure the first few waves, and the rest should be peasants

yesterday had a massive siege battle using something similar, "open gate strat" but unfortunately the AI keep closing the gate. it was 1400 to 270. it took me around 30--40min i think to finish it was a longest battle i had yet so far. myself alone had killed over 107. my health was too low to finish the second round of attack. lucky my troop did not fail me. 400 to 220 auto resolve save my ass with over 900 prisoner.. $$$$$$ incase you guy wondering what town or castle, it was akiser castle next to Akkalat..

U can defend alone whole city vs unlimited number of enemys. All is you need its balistas... just kill 30-100 troops with balista, then press tab, fall back, kill 30-100 troops, fall back.....

Yeah, siege defence sucks. Worst part is archers vs archers, which is always won by attackers. Even when number of archers is similar. There is one (a bit broken, but still) way to siege city or castle quickly. Just change number of units on map to maximum 200. Run for ladders like Forest Gump and open gate, they will run to close it and try to chase you. With defenders leaving walls it's won. This way with 300 sturgian axeman you can siege castle with 1000 defenders, after pushing them of the wall they will just spawn and run into your line. You can even put your archers on wall and at the end they will be the attackers. So... Funny part of it is that it's sometimes better to let them get castle and attack afterward because it's easier to attack than defend. History accurate as f

Nice video, thank you! One part that I annoying about siege is that sometime game just took control of your troop. Archers on the wall is wonderful. Troop 'tend' to siege engine, though, is very annoying. I got into a fight with Dether, and he greet whatever the game send up the wall with +100 crossbow men.

Yeah, if I'm at this big of a disadvantage, I open the gates, and do a full infantry charge, while my archers and myself man the walls and siege weapons. My infantry can always handle themselves, and with my archers doing work, all that left is for me to hit shots OVER my men to thin their numbers. 90% of the time, this strat works for me.

Oh, I just realized the main difference between your sieges and mine - I always just have ballistae. I don't know how to build and choose my own siege equipment when on defense.

This is the exact same siege map I played last before quitting bannerlord. I did almost the same thing except I didn't opened the gates. It works anyway since the enemies trickle down the wall and walks uncaringly to the stairs while archers shoot at them freely from the ground. Sieges are the most stupid thing in bannerlord. You are in a total disadvantage defending the walls which is the exact opposite irl. Archers don't even use cover so even if you have high tier archers if you let the AI to its own devices they'll lose to lower tier enemy archers. Also in my experience, it is easier to defend a breached castle than a castle with fully intact walls. You just have to put archers on the sides and they are all gonna die. Kinda like what they do here when you opened your gates.

Hey, I got a problem, I can't stop my unit from going by themself on the wall to defend it. Yes, I disabled delegate command, but it didn't change anything, some of my unit still go on the wall to defend it, will some stay where I told them to go.

They start on out Scatter formation, so make sure you change them to line, wall or anything else. Scatter is the formation that tells the AI to seek out environmental things to use like rocks, walls, etc.

Games never get walls right... Castles were defended by a handful of people against armies. The fact you need almost 1-1 ratio of quality and quantity in most games is kinda lame.

I have a similar issue, I have around 300-400 troops against 700. It seems no matter how many I take out with the Ballista I just cant do enough to win. My archers put in so much work too

random: I really like Godun, he's been such a bro in my campaign and I always go to him when he's in trouble as well as the reinforcements Gandalf style and it's just awesome whenever we fight together or reinforce each other cause we happen to be nearby. Idk it's random but it's just that I've happened to meet up with him a lot more times than with anyone else and just remember his name.

Kudos to getting his son the big lady. Also, this strat reminds me of what I used to do on Rome total war back in the day. Glad to see it's still working. Are troops easier to control in siege defenses yet? Mine always scatter no matter what I do, but haven't played the newest versions yet.

Man, I've done this tactic many times, yet the most annoying thing always breaks it : there's regularly a couple of my guys closing the doors I opened. It's just infuriating to prepare a cool ambush, only for some halfwit militia general wanabe wasting my efforts and comdemning the entire siege to failure >< I also did multiple times in attacking siege the "running to the ladders and going in alone with a noble bow" tactic. Needs a few tries and doesn't work on all castles, but you can actually beat a 4:1 offensive siege like that. Just need to be quick enough, find a nice quiet place around the walls or towers, and shoot away.

Beautiful... a siege where the wall is practically a divider for a melee range combat. Turning everything into defending a narrow pass.

one may think this is unrealistic, and in some ways it is, however fighting from a defensible fallback position is prime castle doctrine. there are several castles that are actually designed to have the first layer of defense breached and then having a strong defense while putting the enemy at a big disadvantage. sort of like the bailey in the game, but the stronger gate would be the second one that the infantry have to get through without the ram. since some of the towns and castles are partially copied from real castles you will notice walking around them that there are secondary walls that can't be used in the sieges, which is exactly where you want the archers if they have too many archers, instead of the walls when falling back. basically they did a good job with the architecture for the whole fief, but you only get a small amount in order to give the enemy a game style chance at winning (realistic numbers would be 10 siegers to 1 defender to even have a chance in most cases). most of the time you can't use the onager to take out siege towers that have made it to the walls, so it is nice to see that they can target the ladders in that map, though the angle for them is wrong and they take out your own men, but if they had a siege tower it would have been nice that they could take it out. the range of motion will probably get patched out though. that being said even siege ladders are not that great, and without ladders as backup an AI that targets siege engines will crush an enemy that brings towers more likely than ladders i think (i didn't upgrade from 1.8.1 because of mods and a campaign i am doing).

amazing tactic! man if the devs will not make it to the original.. i would love to see a mod where everybody has a certain stamina and the more you fight and run.. to go down.. but if u stay still will go up again just like in total war games.. that way sooo many other tactics could be implemented

reminds me of when i was defending against a 1400 vlandian army as khuzait and i accidently told everyone to charge we made them retreat somehow even though the troop ratio was 9/28 in their favor

Unless players have ranged superiority as defender to deal with ranged attackers, it's almost always better to have ranged troops below the walls and instead target down any enemy units that just made it to to the top of the ladder. I like to divert some melee troops with throwables to aid ranged units to break down shields. At some point, the attacker will dump their ranged troops to assault walls and those are easy pickings without shields. I still need to work on the ideal positioning of ranged and melee troop formations for the front gate. If there's onagers for defense, the player should manually control it to destroy any siege towers and battering rams to reduce the number of possible entry points.

Around 4:10, if you have RTS camera, or a mod thag allows you to control Ally after death, you won't need to keep your main character alive.

I wonder why is when I break the gates in a siege then give the charge command they start climbing ladders. I also noticed if I out number the attackers charge command makes my own troops climb ladders.

I'll wait until they or modders fix ai and sieges. Under normal circumstances you should be able to defend against armies that are 10 times or more larger.

2:30 bruh... Next time put you infantry to the right from gates and archers to the left side. Enemy carrying their shields in left arm so if your infantry to rhe right side, the enemy will be exposed to archers fire, not just getting those arrows to their shields as they enter...

One of the guides I think would be really helpful is how to deal with clans. I.e., how to recruit them into your kingdom, how to get rid of an entire clan, and managing relations with executions. I think the game needs to be a bit more forgiving with the execution repercussions. It makes it so even as much as 1 person cannot be killed without mega consequences even outside the kingdom you're at war with. I think it should either A) only be reserved for friends of the person you've executed or B) only be reserved to those within their kingdom. It wouldn't make sense for the enemy kingdom to be mad that I killed their enemy clan for example. It can also have a cooldown period where the more people you execute in a short span of time, the more relation damage it will do, but if you give a cooldown period, an execution's relation damage can be managed. I just think there needs to be a way to damage control the negative relation especially to the other factions.

Yo I really hate doing caravan missions and attempting to protect and absolutely bonkers ai. Last night we were position on a hill over looking a ravine with a very narrow passage way. 100 percent advantage just place fians to front and let them pick off the bandit calvary. What does the AI do? Runs down the hill and head first into enemy calvary....

Khuzaits are also really strong during sieges, if they are a mostly horse archer and marksman army. They can pick the walls clean before finishing with a charge. I've joined them, and it is sickening what they do to defenders.

sorry but you should have placed your infantry to right side of the gates, that way enemy troops non shielded side would have been towards your archers

I seperate my infantry into 5 groups. 1 group on each ladder crammed against the walls and one on the gate. Archers in 3 groups all across the walls. Haven't lost a siege yet including an epic victory where I was being out numbered 600 to 2400.
