One of the many reasons I’m a huge Ren fan, (I’m 64 )is that he is awakening the young to being creative- not just stylistic. That it’s him and his creative friends using their skills and environment to create amazing work that attracts 16-80 year olds without industry. They are learning that human talent is better than machine bs. Humanity has taken a backseat to popular culture for way too long

Watching the jaw drop reaction to the twist at the end reminded me of my own reaction on first seeing this masterpiece. Ren was in school with my daughter and it’s clear from the beginning he was special. He has suffered a lot of adversity in his life so it’s wonderful to see so many people living his artistry. He can leap in and out of any genre, he’s a multi instrumentalist, his lyrics are amazing, he rap and sing at the highest level. Has there ever been anyone like him before? I think he is truly unique and I’m going to say it, he’s a genius. Loving your reactions keep them coming.

I've lived through a lot of decades, and Ren is a genius, I agree with you. This particular piece is a masterpiece, a compelling commentary on generational violence and inherited traits. This could easily be incorporated into curriculums for study - sociology, psychology, music, film studies etc. It was lovely to read that you knew of him earlier and that he was somebody special ❤

Another great reaction and analysis. Ren’s trilogy has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and really showcases his guitar skills. Ren’s earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” "Hold On," “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” his recent release "The Illest Of Our Time," and his latest song “Animal Flow,” both the full production and the live acoustic version, just to name a few. Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “Improvising Around Stevie Wonder,” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. Last but not least, Ren’s busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. I am looking forward to watch you continue down the Ren rabbithole.

He's a fully self-taught guitar player, he only knows the pentatonic scale as a shape. He knows 'patterns', not scales or intervals, and just works out the parts until they sound good. That's as impressive as it is frustrating to hear. I got by for years with little understanding of theory until very recently, and in hindsight I'm kicking myself. Theory is so helpful, and very enlightening and interesting to learn.

"Let's do this again. I'm ready for this ride." Are you sure about that? Kidding, I'll update this comment after I finish the reaction. Edit: RENsday is a fabulous idea! Between your Ren reactions and another reactor I watch (Millennial Meets Music) deciding to implement The Warning Wednesdays I now have a new favorite day of the week! Back to this trilogy of tales now. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you consume these stories. I really enjoy watching people watch things. It sounds very odd to say but it's always interesting to get a different perspective on things, and it is by far more entertaining when you're watching someone that truly appreciates what they're seeing. Somebody who is honestly taking in every bit of it. Just the way I would have. Just the way I did. Also, your appreciation and knowledge of music goes a long way. I will never knock a reactor for doing something like pausing, I think that's silly when people do that, however I would like to point out that I do like the way that you chose to react to these tales. I think it was smart to listen to the whole tale and comment mostly in between. So to reiterate my original question/comment... Were you really ready? Ren has a rather large back catalogue of music to go through, not to mention as of yet unreleased tracks. He had a lot of music already prepared for release when he went to Canada for treatment. I, too, want this guy's brain. There's no such thing as an overnight success as we all know. Ren has worked very very hard for 20+ years to get to this point, through literal blood, sweat, and tears and I am so thankful for his sake that he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. How disappointing if we had all discovered him posthumously. I'm looking forward to the next one!

What you saw in Hi Ren, was truly his reality. Misdiagnosed with Lyme disease for 7 years by conventional doctors who deemed him mentally ill, when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms, they very often become misdiagnosed. Lyme disease can present itself as many neurological conditions including Acute Transverse Myelitis[3], Ptosis[4], Seizures, and Chronic Fatigue[1] and these symptoms can be often misdiagnosed or deemed psychosomatic. Second is dealing with the symptoms of Lyme neuroborreliosis, these neurological symptoms often leave patients feeling drained and debilitated as they begin losing their quality of life. Over time, patients find themselves unable to do the things they love as they struggle to get ahead of their progressing symptoms.

Songs released in 2019. Jenny and Screech were 14 years old. At the beginning of Violets tale it starts in "Two Zero Zero Five" 2005. The year they were born. I missed that the first time not realizing it went back in time. What is amazing is that he released the video for Violets tale 2 years after Jenny and Screech. Wow...the preplanning putting all of that together.

Violet's Tale is maybe a stronger all around piece than even Hi Ren. Those opening haunting vocals, the brutality of the lyrics and his delivery of them, and the moment he opens Violet's eyes, it's all so strong. Ren really shines a new light on all of the music I used to consider 'great'. And to quote one of the greatest philosophers of our time: "The brighter the light shines, the darker the shadow it casts". He's buried most of the 'classics', entire albums, and indeed entire bands for me. Few individual works by the greats can even stand up for consideration next to these songs. He's special. And when you finally see him speak you'll find him to be very genuine and humble, which is another breath of fresh air in an industry filled with so many duds and dirtbags.

Another excellent reaction! When you talked about how he chooses just the right words for his lyrics, I happened to be thinking about the line: "That's the sound of his fists when they fall like a crashing pilot." At first I glossed over it without realizing that an abuser is someone who wants to be in control of other people to hide their own insecurities, and a pilot of course is supposed to be in control of a plane. A bad pilot, however, will bring the whole thing down by f***ing things up. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I've seen enough Ren videos and interviews to know that he intuitively and almost subconsciously knows exactly what he's doing.

Love this reaction Rensday should be a Holliday. Many are catching on to it. He is known to many is a Modern Day Bard. I also like a comment I saw that said “Shakespeare never wrote such a beautiful tragedy as this”. I have seen many of his livestreams on Twitch and he has done a couple interviews with reactors now. He is currently in Canada getting treatment and he loves and appreciates his fans. He still gets emotional when he releases songs during his live stream and he sees just how many people who love everything he does. He is humble. I have heard many many of his songs now that not only just him but also with his band he was in called The Big Push along with his many talents he has brought in. They all adore him also. Deep diving into Ren is an experience and he literally does everything. I have seen hundreds of reactors react to him and it’s a new experience each time. Ren has a huge vocabulary and draws from his exposure to diverse readings and literature and music genres... this is like the story of 'Everyman'...almost like a parable...we can ponder on the narrator/ minstrel telling us the tales...and every now and then he becomes Screech and Stevie ...and then back to the narrator...these stories help us to see the humanity even underneath even the flawed characters...by the end we can see why Screech is how he was...we can grow and be transformed through these tales... Please do more...'Crutch' is one of his early ones...

Jenny's tell came from a newspaper article he had read. He added the other 2 later. I remember waiting months for each of them.

Really enjoyed your reaction. You seem to genuinely appreciate Ren's talent. He's simply blown me away these past few months of exploring his back catalogue and I really hope he continues to capture people's imagination across the world. You'll probably be flooded with suggestions for further listening but I might as well contribute - for the bars, 'Losing it' and maybe 'Money Game Pt II', for the songwriting and beautiful, creative singing, 'Humble', 'Dominoes', 'Chalk Outlines' and 'How to be Me', for the street performances 'War Pigs' and 'I Shot the Sheriff'. 'Ocean' is a very special track too. The list goes on and on and on...

One of the best reactions to this trilogy on KZbin. I should know, I’ve seen them all. :) I know you’ll be inundated with suggestions so I’ll add my weight to How To Be Me (live). It’s a great step into another side of him.

Excellent! I’ll never tire of that reaction at the end of this tale. So many have missed it but when you’re open mouthed like that you certainly got it!!
