I was a Violet, my uncle was the sexual abuse and my father was the physical abuse. I stopped the trauma cycle repeating with me by choosing to stay childfree, and my sister is stopping the cycle with how she treats her two toddlers (she's the parent that everyone deserves). Sometimes I have to help when she's having a hard time (she just left her emotionally/financially abusive husband), but she's determined that it ends with her. It took many failed attempts before I finally made it through the entire trilogy.

First of all, I think it was very heartwarming to see your reaction. So many of us can relate and are deeply moved by his music. He makes the people who have been through the trenches gravitate towards each other for comfort, support and just spreading love. The first time I've seen the trilogy, I was shook 🥺 As a fellow "Violet" I was not prepared to witness Ren's rendition of Stevie, which unfortunately was very realistic. But it is also very important to bring the issue of domestic abuse of women and men in the open. Ren makes people deal with issues they would rather avoid and gets them to face their emotions in every way.

Ditto Lilly and I share your sentiments that Ren has created (and inspired) a Collective of beautiful Light-minded Souls who (I believe) were made to tested and twisted for our own insights and journeys and the empathy we van share to support each other. He's created a safe space for us to open up and reveal our vulnerabilities with less shame and far less isolation. I know I certainly feel less alone and am amongst kindred spirits now "my people" and conversations I've had or comments I've read etc have been better for me than any therapy session with a professional who hasn't experienced any of that (Sick Boi vibes there for my experience of MH and medical professionals as well as Safeguarding teams who just seem to treat everyone as a tick box exercise

There is no practical way to end the cycle. I don’t agree with it, the state of the world today is completely screwed up, but there’s no logical way to make people come together. That will never happen. The only thing we can do is keep moving forward and focus on how we treat people and problems, rather than how society treats people and problems

The ones that survive hard times, persevere and strive beyond strife and survival towards at least stoicism are greater beings. “Lessons learned hard are learned well” : tragedy tempers the few that aren’t crippled by these injustices to a degree that can’t be achieved by an easier life. No one should have to experience what it takes to overcome these dark corridors but devoid of choice - there are occasions where trials by fire forms fortuitous forces

He depicts generational violence so well, doesn't he? We're so used to Hollywood showing the sensationalised gore but Ren makes us picture it ourselves, and the horror of it is clearer than ever. I started to worry that you needed to breathe as he came toward the end of Violet's Tale. It's so immersive that I think I held mine at the point, too. I've seen it several times now and it doesn't get any easier, nor do I marvel at less at the storytelling. Lots of things get called 'Shakespearian' but I think this is one of very few that actually deserves it.

It's like a Shakespearian tragedy. Ren calls this Bardcore. Bards were Medieval singers who sang about what was happening at the time. Here he's highlighting dark issues that need to be brought into the light. Yes, it's a hard listen but hopefully it makes people more aware and think about how things could be changed. Please note that not all of Ren's stuff is heavy - he does fun stuff too! Check out Bongo Bong with his band The Big Push :)
@Ranik-Jason Жыл бұрын
I think his calling of this is right. Bardcore matches alot of artists i found in the last years which all bring these important subjects up - it's always these storytelling type songs that deliver it to the masses "the right way" - and i can't find a better word for it than what he found for it. For me the three biggest Bardcore talents right now are: Ren, NF and Santan Dave. But thats just my personal taste - there are tons of new artists practicing it and there were alot back in the days which contributed in this style. Hope his will rise and motivate more musicians to follow this path and bring up these subjects - sadly there are far too much that are under the radar.

OMG I am so glad I found you. Thank you so much for modeling male vulnerability and feelings like a fucking boss. Please do not for one second entertain the thought that you should have “held it together”. That BS kills good men for no good reason. Do you know how many men I have watched react to this who sit there, showing no real emotion, and their commentary is mostly about the storytelling, and how amazing it is. It astonishes me that people can watch such a perfect and real musical depiction of violence, and not feel something, or refuse to show their feelings. I’m a women’s health expert, and I also care about men’s health, because it directly affects women’s health and vice versa. Men need more role models like you. Your feelings are real and that is why people come to watch Ren reactions. I would actually give a lot to be able to see that again for the first time because it hit me so hard. I have taken care of those women. A lot of women have been subject to violence, either verbal, physical or sexual. It is an almost universal experience in one way or another. I am certain that if men were able to express their emotions and talk about their experiences without ridicule, the rates in men would be astonishingly high. A lot of men suffer abuse at the hands of women, but it isn’t always safe to report that. The culture that tells man to man up and push that shit down is killing good men and I appreciate you very much for the courage to show your feelings. New sub. Watching your reaction was as close as I can get to seeing it again for the first time. It was beautiful to watch it through your eyes. Thank you for letting us in. Your subs gonna go up up up. I broke down at the end because I felt the climax hit me like a ton of bricks. Thank you. :)
@tracyrodgers5179 Жыл бұрын
Oh that’s so great to hear. That’s your body telling you that you’re on the right track. I really have come to believe that suppressed negative emotion is the number one cause of chronic illness and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, Western medicine is more interested in which prescription drugs treat which symptoms, as opposed to looking into biologic causes of disease and the impact of stress. And of course, the flipside of the coin is that those issues are difficult to explore without making people think you’re saying it’s all in their head. Once your caregiver decides that it is a “mental health issue”, they’re no longer curious about whether or not you have some thing like Lyme disease. Because mental health and disease processes in the body are completely disconnected from one another in healthcare. It’s a circular problem because we’re not coming at it from the right perspective and that has become more and more clear to me over the course of my career. I’m glad you are feeling the benefits of no longer holding that beachball under water. It gets exhausting

So sorry you had those horrendous experiences. I do believe (although it's hard to swallow sometimes in the midst of it when we just want to curl up and lament "why me, why me?!") that many of us, like Ren has now realised, we're meant to be "tested and twisted" - sometimes the insight of "why" and what we have "gained" from those experiences can be a long time coming - I'm 55 now and it's only the last couple of years I realised I have a higher purpose and likely chose this tortured path because I can now reach out to and support others who've had similar journeys with full empathy and understanding rather than the "Sick Boi" attitude of being talked at and our feelings and experiences so downplayed by the professionals leaving us feel even more alone, unheard and unvalidated. I hope it will not be too long before you can find "the why" of your experiences and perhaps it may be to reach others who right now feel lost and unreachable, or perhaps you might become an amazing writer who can use your experiences to bring a book or film true to life - or whatever way it comes to you 🙌

I get so frustrated with some reactions when they miss the line "he swung possessed with the devil in his chest"....he killed her. So many miss that, some never catch it, even through the whole story. Also, for "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. Powerful stuff. Not sure if you caught it or not, but he did all 3 songs in a single take each, just like "Hi Ren". In the "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance. The man is truly special.

Also Violets parents. Her mother turned to silence and her father to violence. Violet and Stevie did the same and so did Jenny and James. That Violet got abused is clear as day, but Jenny? She was 14, walked home in the middle of the night in high heels? One can only imagine what she did for work. She "walked the floor", streetwalker. She was abused just like her mother. Doesn't seem like everyone is catching that. 3 generations that turned to the same awful fate. One other little nugget. Screech is calling Jennys cheeks rosy, as in red. Screech is standing in the blue light dying. Mix red and blue and you get Violet. There are so many lyrical little nuggets.

As I've read it both Jenny and Screech were real people. Ren read the newspaper one day in 2019 and buried on the 6th or 7th page was a short "write-up" [I guess you'd call it] on the tragic death of two 14-year-olds; a girl, Jenny, and her killer [proper name James somebody] known in the Neiborhood as Screech. He thought that kind of news [of the decay in society that resolves in such ways] deserved more attention. So, he wrote the first two of the trilogy shortly after reading of them. These few years later he took on the task of writing a fictional story to further drive home the point that this continuing cycle of violence and decay in society should be paid attention to. So, the entire Violet story he designed to fit the personalities of those two and how they are made. Very impressive writing [and storytelling] and motivation resulted in Violet's Tale. Easily imagined they were brought up in separate foster homes. Jenny took on the quiet nature [still nature] of her mom [freezing in her tracks, unable to move when commanded to give up her goods] while Screech took on the character of his father. 14 years after two zero zero five they met each other probably for the first time and a newspaper article on the 6th or 7th page is what became of it. [as Ren has imagined it for us] His story telling has purpose. Real purpose. That is what has him stand alone [it seems] in today's society. [unique as an artist]

Next Ren song you react to, you should try something more upbeat! I mean, unless you enjoy having your emotions drawn out of you like this. I think I suggested "War Pigs" with his band, The Big Push, in the comments to your "Hi Ren" reaction. If you want to steer clear of cover tunes & only want to react to original compositions, I'm quite fond of "Watch Out" on the EP "Can Do Will Do" by The Big Push. "Blind Eyed" with Sam Tompkins is another great one. If you want another tearjerker, try "How To Be Me" (you're gonna LOVE Chinchilla!) or "Precious" from that same Big Push EP. They're both about Ren's friend Joe, who killed himself when Ren was 19. Love your reactions. It's powerful stuff, right? Just what popular music needed to free us from the souless, autotuned Millenial whoop crap that's been repackaged & served to us over & over & over again over the past decade or so. Ren has made music human again, given art a soul. I haven't been THIS taken by an artist since 1991's release of "Nevermind." And just like Nirvana, I believe Ren has shifted the whole paradigm, redefined what makes music good. It's a good thing! Cheer up, man. It's not all death & sickness & gloom. You have about 5 more sides of Ren to explore! ✌🏼

I had a similar reaction when the youtuber kallmekris recently spoke about her own struggles and history. Love to all you girls (and boys) out there showing empathy and kindness to one another. 💓

We need more entertainment like this. The world is hurting and Ren doesn't let us close our eyes to reality. His music stirs the soul, and is deeply purposeful, relevant, haunting, and poignant. He is a true artist, unlike most, here to help keep us in touch with reality, draw us together through shared sentiments, and strengthen us to keep moving forward. Thank you for showing up, Ren.

I really love your reactions. Ren brings most people to tears. I've cried more tears in 2 weeks than I have in 10 years. Ren is a chameleon. An artist like no other, a poet, a story teller, and a truly great rapper. For your own sanity check out The Hunger, Money Game Part 1 and 2 and Illest of our time for a different side of Ren 😉🥰

It is not possible to hear these songs for the first (or, in fact twentieth) time with dry eyes. Your honest reaction was beautiful. I'm also a father, to two boys, so I also feel the pain with you.

I'm 61 years old and run a small 911 center. Hi Ren and The tale of Jenny and Screech connected with me so much. We talk to people daily losing the battle with themselves. We see the effects of domestic violence daily and it mostly is generational. Here I am, watching other people of all walks of life connect through Rens music. First, I was getting Rap reactors, shock of all shocks, I completely underestamated their compassion. Now people into metal music and am so surprised how deep they are. Maybe, this was Rens plan or an unintended consequence, who knows? But my mind has been opened. We are all human. Loved your reaction. Subscribed ❤️

This is an EXCELLENT suggestion! It's so good that the guitarist (bassist?) of The Verve sent Ren a guitar as a gift of appreciation! It has a sticker on it that says "Music Saves"... Ren saves. For sure.

Thank you for your honest and unfiltered reaction to this masterwork. Speaking as a woman it's truly lovely to see a man so openly and profoundly affected. After watching Violet's Tale the first time I couldn't go back to it for about a month, due to the overwhelming feelings it evoked in me. I've now watched multiple times, and without fail am crying from "ah, she never stood a chance" to the end. Ren also has a ton of upbeat stuff, songs I play regularly to make myself feel great. Love Music Parts 1, 2 & 3, Losing It (Fisher Rap Retake), What You Want (totally fun homage - check it out, you'll see what I mean). And if you want to cry again, there's Ren + Chinchilla singing How To Be Me. Basically, with Ren, you cannot go wrong. He's always putting everything he has into every track, and he's so incredibly talented across so many genres it's kinda mind-boggling.

Wonderful comments! I suggest an upbeat one next, try 'Losing it, Fisher retake ' if you don't laugh at the 'dick' line I will be very surprised! It's a fun video to watch!

I've watched a ton of reactions to this and often see that male reactors laugh when Ren calls Stevie a little prick, but female reactors rarely do. I think women know where it's going before men based on their own experiences or that of another female in their life.

Dude, you're amazing. You express what many of us feel watching this. I am sorry this has hit you so hard; it rocked me the first time too. I just want to hug you. This started with Ren reading an article about a kid knifing a streetwalker, then being shot by police. Ren spun it into Jenny's Tale, later continuing the story with Screech's Tale. It was a few years before Violet's Tale came along. It's an amazingly written story, performed with each act recorded in a single continuous take while recording it with a lavalier (Note the passerby at various points). Now, Screech and Jenny were twins. Most likely fostered out to different families (Steve's going to prison, pretty sure) So Jenny was a 14-year old "Statue in high-heeled shoes" on streets "...she'd walked it about a thousand times before." A 14 year old in heels late at night? A tidbit to add to the story: Screech's buddy Patrick wasn't home because he was with Screech's girl at her place (which is why she was busy). It's crazy...Screech turned out like his father and grandfather; Jenny was quiet...silent even.

Man, your reaction is just as mine was… The story telling, the delivery, just so packed with latent emotion. Gets me every time, makes my mind go places it wouldn’t normally. Makes me want to reach in to the screen and help as many lost souls as possible. REN is a genius at connecting with people, but also letting us see, just how many like minded Good souls are in this world. Stay true to yourself my friend 💜

He does do more upbeat songs, too. He has no genre. Raps wicked good. Try those to stop the sadness. I was happy to find some music that did not make me cry. Your reactions are so very authentic. Shout out to you, sir. Loving this channel.

I LOVE your reaction videos to REN. No words are needed, just the pure, sincere emotional pouring as you watch and digest the whole story. So many youtube reactors, stop the video far too many times, which interrupts the flow, so they miss the important continuity of the piece. Ren's stories require total concentration and conviction as each minute detail is paramount to the whole experience. As so many people have already pointed out ; Ren is no ordinary singer songwriter. He is a social commentator with an incredible ability to move people with his message. He may be THE greatest creative musical artist out there today. Excellent stuff brother. Thank you for your sincere emotional reaction. 🙏

Ren is such a modern day Bard it is unbelievable. He gives hints of it throughout these 3, but at the very end how he dances around and does VERY medieval bard flourishes and possess. This trilogy is probably what you would have listened to in a Medieval taverns, they sang AND performed solo.... not a Medieval Performance Troop.

Just found your channel, in part due to my obsession with Ren reactions LOL. You seem to be genuine at heart, and I feel like goes a long way and being a reactor. I know I am a brand-new follower but it would be awesome if you were to look into how to be me, and chalk outlines. I seriously doubt you will be disappointed. Oh and by the way he does a lot more than just this type of, if you have not already looked into his endless array of abilities.

Not every song or performance by Ren is a masterpiece, but so far I haven't found one that isn't one. Such variety, you will never be sure of what you will get before the music starts. That's the best part of Ren. He is just a genius. Thank you for your reaction and your emotions, so many of us feel the same. Chills, revulsion or a mixture of so many feelings watching Ren.

Yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, It broke me also. 55 year old, whiskey toting mountain man from Idaho Wild. I have considered myself pretty strong, not a tuff guy, but had piss offs for territory with bears, and wolves, yet this peice broke me like a little child. I can not even watch a reaction, of which this is probably my 30th reaction to this song, without busting out the tears...... This Ren, really knows how to drive a stake of reality into a story and its amazing, how so much tragity in his story makes the feeling of reality, so horrifing, yet with a feeling of no fear to face the reality as after hereing this shared like this, we who have heard will never be Alone! GODBless and Namaste for such a beautiful and honest reaction. Cheers.

You're not alone in having this type of reaction and its good to see people connecting over Rens songs. Check out him performing with his band The Big Push for a more uplifting side of him - I shot the sheriff / Road to Zion / Hip Hop mash up is an absolute just to see and I guarantee will blow you away and make you grin like a loon. Be careful during the ren-aissance journey. This guy is extremely impactful and a true talent who has changed my life. Save some of your emotional power for “ I forgot how to be me” with chinchilla live or the same two in “Chalk outlines” live. Turning 61 shortly and REN has changed my perceptions on many things by my looking inward. Happy journey, you’re recovery has just begun on the road to a happy destiny.

Yup. Me too, my friend. I had the same reaction the first time I watched this too. ... Same with "Hi Ren". This guy is an absolute force, not to be overlooked. I'm 56 years old and have never, despite my wide range of musical interests, been so overwhelmingly moved by any one artist's works as I have been since I first listened to him about a month ago. I had to hear more, so I looked to see if he had anything else out there in YT land, and I've been blown away! He's not only a musician/singer/rapper, he's also a great story teller, playwright, director, producer, and performer. I've subbed to your channel, because I really felt your reaction, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see you jumping into this rabbit hole, and I'd really like to see you react to more of Ren's work. ... (not all of it is as brutally emotional as this..) Thank you! Cheers, from Saskatchewan, Canada!

Ren is a really cool unique addition to the music world, he brings with him storytelling and theater and feeling far more than just bopping your head to a beat. His words makes you THINK. He dips his toes into classical, opera, rap and singing, and does it really well. He composes, writes and produces his own stuff, even beat boxing on his tracks. And what he can do on a guitar is IMPRESSIVE. I’m not sure the world has experienced such a well rounded musical genius since Freddie Mercury. For real. That’s not even hyperbole.
