Hi Rob. I'm doing well. Ready for bed, but then I saw you'd posted a video so I thought I'd have a look now ... Three absolute classics by Richard Thompson. There's magic in the air when the lyrics, tune and singing all come together ... The Hawkwind cover looks very clean.

Looks like it was well worth clawing through those overly tight crates! Bravo on finding such a beautiful copy of In Search of Space. What a great record. Take care, John.

Thanks John Yes, finding that Hawkwind made my year!..I wished there was more I wanted in that vendors' racks as everything he was selling was so reasonable.

Thanks Jamie Henry The Human Fly is an excellent listen..Richard Thompson is playing in Birmingham in June, I'm tempted to go. The Hawkwind find was a real coup. Hope you're keeping well 😉 🙏

A very decent haul there Rob, sounds like a great fair. I'm on the hunt for more R&L Thompson myself after picking up Bright Lights a few months back. A fantastic record.

Hi Rob - I've been known to walk straight out of a record shop if the crates are jammed full. Nice set of Richard Thompson finds, all solid albums. I have a CD box that covers that series of related Jade Warrior releases. I've only listened to the first 'Floating World' so far which is quite ambient. Lovely clean / complete copy of 'In Search of Space'. I've never seen the booklet before. My copy doesn't have it and the cover has the common damage to the opening. Ah..Floating World, that's the one I was looking for!.. thanks for that Dale..yes, super delighted with the Hawkwind find, another 'grail' crossed off the list. May be another couple of weeks before I get the opportunity to visit the lock-up, but I'll do a video once I've reviewed the records. Have a great weekend too.

I too was at the Stratford fair nice and early - got some good stuff too - and had very nice fish n chips at the newly opened chip shed ! 🎉

Nice Hawkwind, In Search of Space is the first Hawkwind Lp I ever owned. I have a US copy with the flight log, the booklet is blue instead of black. I've never read it though, It looks like a deep read. 😵‍💫 The booklets are scarce in the US as well.

Thanks Ron Yeah, I think you're right with the Logbook, definitely not a casual read. Interesting to hear that the US copy was blue.

Hi Rob... well you certainly had a very successful record fair! Tightly packed crates are a pain I agree, but even worse is when the boxes are 3 or 4 deep. Probably not a problem for you, but being a short arse I can never reach to the back (and I'm sure that's where the best stuff is). Superb pickups of the wonderful Mr Thompson. I love Henry - I don't think he was as vocally confident as he became, but everything you look for in a Thompson album is there. I've just seen that he's got a new album coming out next month - heard one track from it and it was very good. Just picked up Waves myself the other weekend - I think you'll like it. The only other one of that series that they did which I have is the 3rd Way of the Sun. I probably prefer that but then again I've lived with it for decades now. There's a CD box set of all the albums that Esoteric have put out. And In Search of Space - my favourite Hawkwind (studio) album, and one of my favourite albums of all time. I too stupidly got rid of my original copy when I converted to CD back in the day. I did pick up a vinyl reissue when I got back into vinyl - it came as a double album but without the booklet and the die cut sleeve. It took me a long time to find another original - as you say the cover's are usually shot to pieces, or they're missing the booklet - or if in good condition extortionally expensive. I was so glad to eventually find a full copy in excellent condition for a decent price that I was happy to pay. Good luck with the record collection - hope you find something worthwhile in there. Thanks for the great comment Pete. Yes, very pleased with what I got from the fair. The RTs are wonderful and glad I managed to upgrade my copy of ' Pours Down like Silver'. Total coup to pick up In Search of Space for what I paid, it's a good VG + cover and vinyl and booklet in decent shape..I almost didn't get it as I couldn't believe how cheap it was, thinking there was something wrong with it!!??.. I needn't have worried. I think the album is the start of their long mantra style of songwriting, a lot of Krautrock fans seem to appreciate it. All the best. Rob.

Great Richard Thompson scores. Henry the Human Fly is a big favorite of mine. It came out in America on Reprise and sold absolutely nothing, so that version is quite hard to find. Those Island era Jade Warrior albums are all brilliant; I think they are far better than the Vertigo albums.

Thanks Michael I like most of what I've heard of Richard Thompsons' output in the 70s..Henry The Human Fly is excellent and his vocals are on top form. Looking forward to playing the Jade Warrior although I still don't think its the record I intended to pick-up..

Hi Rob while I was in London last weekend on the underground I saw a poster promoting Richard Thompson tour he’s playing Birmingham in June .. have you ever seen him live .. thanks for showing your record fair finds 👍

Rob, seriously did you buy everything there? How long were you there? That is a crazy amount of records Did you hire someone to carry them all home? I hope you find some treasures in that collection

The porter had a day off as it was a public holiday, so I soldiered on....I actually lied, I only picked up 6 albums not 7!.

Sounds like a good fair Rob although over tightly packed boxes is a no no particularly if the stall holder looks suspiciously at you taking a WAD of them out. Scrupulous dealers eh? Think I've had the hawkwind on CD I'd probably like them more just never investigated much. Soundtracks sounds interesting worth a perusal. The Leeds meet up was great actually the fair was half decent and in a good location with nice variation of sellers. I've still never really done the midlands/ Birmingham and it's right on my doorstep! Did Richard Thompson just dabble with islam or was it more the desert and nomadic lifestyle led them into that and how's it reflected in the songs on that album?

Not sure about Linda, but Richard is certainly still committed to Islam. I think it was a Sufi commune that he and Linda went to in the mid seventies, around 74/75. I've not studied his lyrics in great detail, so it would be wrong of me to say they directly relate to his faith, but I would imagine there would be some experiential leaning there for sure that has influenced his writing. Like Roy Harper I think he's quite the maverick and doesn't play the corporate game in terms of the music industry. He seems a lovely guy whenever I've heard him interviewed.
