I did find a do own Space Ritual but I really don’t know nothing about it, I guess I need to pull that out and play it. Josh Taylor was new to me. As always some interesting albums, some I know and some I don’t.

That Opel seems to be a good price atm, might be tempted. Picked up a 70s Harvest twofer of his first two, which was pleased about. I have an EG edition of the Eno album which sounds ok. The Big Ship is the standout for me. Merry Christmas.

Some very thoughtful choices, Rob. You’re right Nick Drake’s music could be joyful, in a wistful way. Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind is a great song. I’m ashamed to say I don’t know any of his other songs. I love Cemetery Gates and I reckon Morrissey can be hilarious at times.

The Sad Bastard Tag is probably next on my list. I didn't even realize that some feel that Soul Mining is sad. Solid choices all around, and it's very cool to see Lightfoot. That's a sad yet wonderful song. Any Smiths song will do, it seems 🙂 The most exciting thing is the prospect of Dale's reply.

Great response Rob. I think this one would be a difficult one for me to do. There's one question that I wouldn't be able to answer and that is my favourite Smiths track - unless the run off at the end of one of their albums counts 🤣! Never could stand them... sorry. And talking of not liking somebody, I don't know why but I've never taken to Nick Drake! Surprising I know given my love of that whole British folk, singer-songwriter scene of that period. There's just something about him that has never appealed - every few years I try again but with no success so far. I do own a best of LP though. Absolutely adore Nilsson's version of Without You and personally never get tired of listening to it. If I was to do this I'd have to include Peter Green's Man of the World - one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. And as for best lyric it probably has to be from Peter Hammill's Betrayed from one of the greatest break-up albums ever 'Over'... "Friends - they're all harbouring knives To embed in your back out of revenge, or spite Or indifference, or lack of other things to do - When in the end just who's going to be a friend for you When they kick you in the guts just as your hand holds out the pearl? It seems that there is nothing left but Hatred and lust in the world" ...and with that happy thought I'll say au-revoir 😁!

Hey Rob. I agree, Nick Drake does bring some joy into his discography as well. Something I think people overlook. The The is a perfect answer for that prompt. I think the 1980s in general has served well for that. A lot of sad dance parties in the 1980s. Lol "Cemetery Gates" is an incredible song. The Queen Is Dead is still my favorite proper album by The Smiths. Even if I reach for Louder Than Bombs more. I'll have to listen to Alan Price's version of "Simon Smith..." Randy Newman's recording is very, well, Randy Newman-esque. I love Sail Away. Dale doing this tag should be a real treat. Lol. Thanks for obliging James and myself with this great response. Cheers!

Great response Rob, so many good picks here. I had both Soul Mining and Lexicon of Love on my initial list but in the end couldn't quite get them in. The first version of 'Dancing Bear' I ever heard was on the Muppet Show Album, sung by Scooter I do believe! It was decades later that I came across the original after getting into Randy. I have the new biography of him waiting to open as an Xmas gift from my mother-in-law this Crimbo - she always picks great presents for me. 🤣

I must dig out Basket of Light for a re-listen since you’ve mentioned it here, Rob. Band on the Run is such a strong album, I think Venus and Mars is good too but I think fizzles out by Side Two. First time I ever heard Zep’s In the Light I was blown away. Certainly their mystical side coming to the fore.

I had an idea (hope) that you would like the Richard Olson LP Rob from stuff you've shown in the past (which were to be honest the one or two items I wasn't that keen on 😁). He was also in a band called The Hanging Stars who I have yet to hear. My favourite music to come out of the Eighteenth Day of May are the albums by The Left Outsides - atmospheric psychy folk. They are (or were, the last album was in 2019) a duo of Alison Cotton and Mark Nicholas, both of 18th Day. Alison has also done some excellent solo work. I think you made fair assessments of the other albums. The Kinks is an enjoyable album but like you said probably not all that memorable at first. I was afraid the albums might be a bit crackly, but you see I have a device on my system which removes the pops and clicks (and does an excellent job of it) - it means I can buy cheaper albums and still get a good sound out of them. But hopefully they'll do you until you find better copies. All the very best... Pete

Hey Rob, such nice gifts from Pete. Such a nice knowledgeable guy. That Kinks record might be a grower. They became a different band when they signed with Geffin. David Geffin told them in no uncertain terms that he wouldn’t accept material like that on Schoolboys. They actually got a new lease on life for awhile before it all turned to shit between Ray and Dave. Cheers.

Great response Rob. I still don't have anything by Bill Withers on vinyl (not through want of trying). Never heard that Delia Derbyshire record, sounds intriguing! I had a copy of that Pentangle record in my hands in Wrexham the other week but it was a little bit pricey unfortunately. Haven't heard the new The The yet, may pick up the CD. I thought of showing Band on the Run for side 2 as well but for some reason it fell off the list - maybe a little played out for me, but still a huge favourite obviously. Nice choice with the side 1 of Loaded - now I think of it, side one of the third eponymous Velvets album would be a strong contender for me also. Have a great weekend.

Interesting selection Rob. Definitely agree with the Wings and Pentangle ones. Can't believe you made us wait 20 minutes until you showed Roy 😂. If I did this it would probably all feature prog albums with only 1 or 2 tracks per side - in fact Yes would provide 8 of the sides from 3 albums. There would have to be a 3 or 4 track minimum in the rules. I'd probably feature either side of Liege and Lief, ditto Neil Young's Everyone Knows..., and the medley side of Abbey Road. Not keeping so warm here - bl**dy boiler packed in! All the best...Pete

I was going to purge White Noise recently but gave it another spin and it's a keeper...If I'd have done a 'proper' version of this thread I think side 2 of Hounds of Love would have featured.
