Lovely that this was played by pipers as the Queen's coffin made it's way five days ago through the lovely Scots byways to Edinburgh. And then again on entering Windsor Castle grounds. Our queen loved Scotland and the Scots people and spent her happiest days at Balmoral. 19 Sept 2022

Thanks for the info, I didn't know much about the song. I served alongside a British unit when I was in the US Army and they had their own pipers, I never got enough of it... When they played Scotland the Brave or Amazing Grace on the pipes, ALL of my soldiers stopped what they were doing and came around to listen, even the kids from the inner cities. I guess true class transcends all cultures.

This particular tune -- Skye Boat -- has always fascinated me. As a 10 year old I used to go wherever there was a slow march event in my home town in India. Have been trying to listen on the internet or any other source for years. At last today I could get hold of one along with the lyrics.

Very nice. My wife and I were in Scotland this summer and visited Culloden, among other sites. We plan to return as soon as possible to visit Skye and other places that we missed. What a beautiful country with lovely people.

This is a lovely tune. I learned some of it's history today. At least, I learned that the song reflects the "retreat" of Bonnie Prince Charlie after his defeat and the unconscionable massacre of his "Highland" army at Culloden in 1746. Charles, a Polish Scot, was CIC for the Highland Clans at Culloden's field. He was reported as chronically indecisive and inexperienced, and his generals suffered lack of communication or accord during the relatively short battle. The Highland Scots and affiliate troops were brave but exhausted and outnumbered by the "German led, English and Scottish Unionists" [the House of Hanover, then ruling England] whose CIC on the field was The Duke of Cumberland. The Battle was one massacre. The merciless killing of the wounded after the battle and the subsequent executions of participant and non participant [in battle] men, women and children of the region, became stone etched examples of the barbarous acts of eradication which the Duke of Cumberland had ordered. He was forever after known as the "Butcher" in regional variation and, "of Culloden". Prince Charles was a Catholic of the House of Stuart and bent on the replacement of the Hanoverian protestant, George II. When it all went wrong in that last battle on British soil, he is reported to have fled eventually to France, and with little mind for the devastation and tragedy left behind him. There are many tales of this time and, like mine and the Skye Boat Song, they were penned many decades after the event. Nevertheless, I think that the tune remains a beautiful one.

During this Co-vid- pandemic, I had lots of time at home and watch the entire series of Outlander - 5 seasons. This 1st season covered this historical event and the writers and directors gave careful attention and detail to this battle. It was very well done. Thanks for explaining the history Robert.

Not exactly a fair description considering the great success of the Highlanders in their crusade against the Hanoverians (they got to Derby!).
@robertsetz
@robertsetz 3 жыл бұрын
@@T_Dun I've just looked up the brief description given in Wikipedia of Culloden and short but relevant historical events there. In my attempts to trace the history and relevance of the Sky Boat Song I restricted the nub my research to the time of the brief battle in which the Highlanders were defeated by "The Butcher of Culloden" - The Duke of Cumberland, and where after, "Bonnie Prince Charlie" was to hurriedly flee to France. The achievements of the Highland Clans and army were never in question but their final stand at Culloden was a tragedy made more so by the subsequent, summary executions of any thought to be connected to the defeated side. This was to include men, women and children in the surrounding areas as well as those Highlanders wounded on the battlefield. To be "fair" in your terms, a treatise on the historical relationship between Scotland and England would be almost a prerequisite! Being of Irish descent myself, both the "Highland Clearances" (among other long term, historical events) in Scotland, and the first attempts at British rule over Ireland in the mid 12th century and beyond, do not historically endear me to British Imperialism of days gone by!

I learned this on pipes when I was about 11 years old. The only way I've ever wanted to hear it is solo pipes or a pipe band without brass (e.g full band of the Scots Guards).
