The current standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in Eastern Ladakh will be four years old next month. Amid periodic Chinese border aggression, how prepared is India? How real are the chances of a two-front war for India, one that involves China and Pakistan? What can India do to prevent China from becoming a dominant player in the Indian Ocean Region? As part of an earlier series called 'Strategic Insight', StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale speaks to military veterans to get a historical perspective of Chinese muscle-flexing, the lessons from those episodes and how India needs to deal with the China challenge.

Excellent episode, NG!! It is of vital importance for all, to be clear on the history of our boundaries and the rationale which forms the basis of our present stance on these borders. The generals who took part in the discussion, had excellent domain awareness on both the historic roots & strategic ramifications of these areas, which they could bring to the table. While this was good as a primer for those uninintiated on the subject, presenting the contrarian perceptions and justifying why our claims are legitimate would have lend more credence to the discussion. More maps, photos & videos of the places being discussed would also be welcome. Of course, there will be a time penalty, which I feel will be worth, for those who follow these channels.

I believe that the likelihood of a two-front war is increasing, with Pakistan potentially being the first to deploy a tactical nuclear weapon over Punjab. This could happen if Indian forces are overpowering China at the border. Is India prepared to handle such a situation?

The retired generals, as usual, are still living in an 80s infantry world, talking about shifting infantry west to east, some nonsense about B2 bombers in Diego Garcia and USA helping tie up China forces in Taiwan strait. They don't get that USA will NOT intervene if China attacks India. US will express shock, insist China immediately cease hostilities, and urge calm. That's it, nothing more. Also disappointing that nobody in the panels, except one of the ladies perhaps, showed any appreciation of PLA conventional capabilities. Zero discussion on: Cyberdefence: On Oct 12 2020, PLA cyber-attacked Mumbai by planting 'trojan horses' in its power systems, causing 12 hour outage. This happened in 'peace-time'. Imagine what they can do in war. How will India protect its civilian and mil comm networks? Every Indian mil network, heck, every airport network, satellite network, power and telecom grid is vulnerable to PLA. Zero discussion on this. PLA Rocket forces: How will Indian mil defend against well-equipped PLA rocket forces? India has no rocket force. With artillery and a handful of Brahmos batteries? Again, no discussion. PLA drones: How will Indian mil defend against hundreds, maybe even thousands of AI-guided PLA drones, when India does not have a single domestic armed drone program? With handful of imported Reapers, Harpys? Nobody had a clue. Air forces: How will IAF, with under-strength squadrons stack up to PLAAF w/ stealth + strategic bomber capability? One can only hope (and pray) that the 'real' Indian strategic planners have done a proper appreciation of PLA conventional capabilities.
