NEW DELHI: The India-China standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh may be nowhere closer to resolution but India has the advantage by occupying tactical heights on the southern bank of Pangong Tso. Mountains favor the defender; whoever occupies dominating heights is in control of the battle, says Siachen hero Lt Gen. Sanjay Kulkarni (Retd). At altitudes in excess of 16,000 feet, warfare assumes an entirely new dimension, he told StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale. Acclimatisation is the key and battle-hardened Indian troops are far better equipped than the Chinese, said Gen. Kulkarni, the first Indian army officer to land on the Siachen glacier in 1984 as part of ‘Operation Meghdoot’. With the current round of LAC standoff poised to extend into winter, Gen. Kulkarni said logistics will be the key. At those heights, you not only battle the enemy but also Nature; the wind chill factor makes it worse, he added.

But Chinese are building air defences at an incredible speed, converting temporary to permanent, so this warfare will not be landbased but air powered, please comment
@sudipvro
@sudipvro 4 жыл бұрын
Every Chinese armament & infrastructure from Finger 4 to Finger 8 is directly under India's Bofors guns....China will have to use airpower to silence our Bofors , but surely our army knows it & have placed many manpads equipped soldiers along with anti-aircraft guns and akash SAMs with the Bofors guns....finger4-8 distance is 8 km & Bofors range is 30+ km..... Two options chinis have through air is direct air attack which will be suicidal OR use some million dollars Air-to-ground cruise missiles to destroy few lakh dollars of artillery guns.... either suicidal or Uneconomical option for chinese

@Apoorv Chauhan wohi toh 1billion $ hai ek S-400 regiment , brahmos 2.75 million $ per unit ... Even if India uses 30 brahmos for whole S-400 regiment ( 8 vehicles in total ) it's 80 million $ gone to destroy 1 billion dollars 😂.... the damage to China would be 200 times the cost of those brahmos's .....but had it been flat land , brahmos would have had little chance.....s-400 can't attack with steep mountains in front of it.

It is heartening to listen to Military leaders and experts. However, fighting in a climatewise hostile territory far away from Han Chinese settlements ( North and mostly East) is convenient for the Chinese..the heat and tension doesn't seem to be reaching them, and anyway they have suppressed the death of their soldiers killed in action. There is nothing to win here, only to defend. We need action in South China sea for these people to get the full taste of what lies ahead when you cross the line. Maybe not by us but by US.

Nitin ji as usual it was an excellent presentation. The country is proud of such valiant soldiers like Gen Kulkarni. i am a layman with deep interest of military issues globally. You did mention though that Indian formations will protect themselves in the heights from storming by the enemy, my worry is China might use precision guided bombs massively, like we did in Kargil, or do heavy artillery and missile attack to soften us. We need to have our lines of supply open. The problem also exists in flat areas in Ladakh.,our supply depots and troops,are exposed for aerial attack. I hope someone will clear my worries.

But, what is worrying is that China may employ a horde of armed little drones- I heard that they are perfecting this deployment - to take out our brave jawans from the heights for which we may not have adequate defence. To forestall that it is better to go on the offence & push them back even accepting the risk of a hot war.

Watch the interview from one Indian soldier who actually joined the fight that night you will know the truth. Find out yourself what exactly happened. India lost a leading officer and several soldiers fell off the cliff themselves while running away from the fight in the dark. Who would do that if they are winning the fight? What is this? A self congratulatory 'gupshup' over a cup of coffee? Guys can we get serious please? With due respects to the achievements of Gen Kulkarni, this discussion was what two pedestrian soldiers would have had sitting in their bunker over a drink, not a discussion that a Major General and a strategic analyst would have on a national channel that claims to be strategic thinking in nature. That mountains favour a defender is a fortress mentality and fortresses have historically been monuments to the stupidity of man. If mountains favour the defender what happened in Kargil? How did the Indian Army throw out a well entrenched enemy? What happened in 1962? If an attacker wants to dislodge a defender from his defended position, he will undertake whatever is required to do it. I really wish this discussion was more based on Chinese imperatives and their likely options, tactics and current dispositions. But this turned out to be just pontification without substance by a General nostalgic about his ancient exertions, thinking that is how wars will still be fought today. Unfortunately infantrymen are so taken in by the emotional attachment to their sense of machoism and self-relaince that they end up paying a very heavy price for doing even the simplest job. There is a need to get real. The Chinese are not fools. If anything they are more hard working and smarter than us, considering where they have reached globally in terms of economy, technology, human development indices and their military. So to write them off so simply and nonchalantly is like living in a fools' paradise. The General referencing the anecdote of the Chinese officer checking his clothing as an indicator of their capability, is highly misleading and infantile to say the least. This is what happens when people have no touch with ground realities. Most Indian soldiers today wear private jackets and shoes procured or sourced from the Chinese goods market at Kupup near Nathu La. That is because the Indian High Altitude clothing is apparently insufficient or inferior in quality or comfort. When you go next time to any Army unit in field, take a look at their clothing, especially their jackets, shoes and gloves. Each one appears to be wearing a different type, color, design and model, which they have privately procured. Our Army looks actually like a damn militia. In J & K and other counter insurgency environments, most men are wearing private bullet proof jackets Most of these items are purchased from stores like Mountain Equipment, Cliff Climbers, Decathlon, etc or Gopinath or Sadar Bazar in Delhi that too privately by them. Most of these items are Chinese made. So for all you know the Chinese officer may have been checking out his own country's export material. We are so simplistic in our thoughts. Even if the General was wearing a legacy Indian Army Jacket, the Chinese guy must only be comparing it not admiring it. That is intelligence on ground. I don't think people from the 'factory of the world' need to be overawed by cheaply imported Indian clothing. Remember, if the Chinese find themselves in a disadvantage, they'll do all they can to mitigate that, unlike Indians who keep sleeping over our problems trying to wish them away with useless self-agrandisement like saying our soldiers are strong, they have high morale or high Josh, they are well acclimatized, one Indian soldiers is equal to 10 Chinese and all such Bull. But all these stuff do not matter anymore. It is exactly because of such misconceptions that the infrastructure for our troops along the border is pathetic. Our standards and expectations are so low. Poor roads, poor accommodation, poor communications, poor living conditions, poor clothing and to an extent poor equipment. Technology will make all these irrelevant in one stroke if there is a war tomorrow.. Do you really expect that the Chinese will try and fight you against your strengths? We can do better than that at least when we think and plan. We need to be more devious, audacious and more technologically foresighted rather than this pedestrian drivel discussed here. This is not even good to teach platoon commanders. Please let's get real and serious about our prospects and work towards understanding Chinese perfidies, their potential, their subterfuges, their deviousness and their capabilities, their capacities and their likely approach to battle. If the Chinese really want to dislodge us, they will leave no stone unturned to do so. The question is what are we going to do to prevent that from happening and hit them real hard where it matters. Let's think this through. War is too serious a business to be left alone to the Generals. They are too emotionally attached to the microscopic perspective and their tiny experiences to look at the macro picture. At least that is what this discussion reinforces. The micro has to be stitched into the macro. meticulously. Look forward to better discussions in future than this self-agrandisement.

Question- why can’t charging force send missiles laden drones or missiles to specific areas of mountain tops guided by satellites? Why do you say that is not possible. If 20-30 drones descend at the same tine and each launched 4 missiles the soldiers at the top won’t have time to run and wont know which drone to shoot at since everything will complete in a matter of seconds and there will be too many drones to decide who will shoot at which. Secondly I can understand that the Ladhak mountains are high, so very cold with rarefied air but the Kargil peaks weren’t that high. Why did we not use the above technique instead of sending our soldiers to climb the hills and get shot like sitting ducks? Question 3- somebody very foolish and irresponsible must have taken the decision to order French mirage fighter jets which proved to be completely ineffective in Kargil. They had to fly low to guide laser bombs to target but were so afraid of getting shot down that they had to fly high and the bombs didn’t reach the targets despite being laser guided and satellite guided. Why?????? And why were these planes not able to avoid stinger shoulder fired missiles ? If these planes lack that basic capability then why did we buy them ???????? There is something rotten in our army and it’s decision making and planning process .

I say, don't be the defender, a defender always has something to lose, go on an attack for once. Head to a contested territory and then eat a chunk of new territory. I say, start patrolling in Aksai Chin, occupy some segments of a disputed territory. I say, start patrolling near Kailash Mansarovar (there was a small Indian enclave there, I heard), put them on the defensive for once.

@Albert Dacosta Yes, but a defender means you are defending a territory, in essence, depending on the terrain, you are restricted in your forward movement. You can only bleed your adversary if you're able to choke him, or if you are able to limit your advantage to 1 attacker vs 3 defenders. I have heard that defenders can multiply their advantage with terrain, but even if they dig trenches, they are still in claimed Indian territory.

@Albert Dacosta Wrong ! Sure the attacker will loose resources but the defender will gain Nothing even in a hundred years.... that is what is happening with foolish India. When we dont attack we encourage bad behavior of the attackers to try attacking us again and again.

Illuminatus Deus but it’s in our culture, history and conviction that India never ever attack or claim another country land. We are getting strong to defend ourselves and protect those who need our help. That’s the moto of India, strongest as It can be to protect our motherland from all outside evil. India never believe in conquering strategy. It has never ever happened in last 5000 years.

Thanks for bringing over Lt. Gen Kulkarni!! Brilliant discussion!! Next time, please discuss some scenarios like how India will deal with missile attacks and use of Air Defense Radars that China can use. Also, which sectors China is likely to attack India - Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh or Himachal Pradesh. Let us say we will wait and see where do Chinese like to attack us! Wat happens after April 2021? How do we get ready to take on China? etc.
