Ladakh Standoff Is A Sum Of China's Fears About Aksai Chin Highway, Says Former Corps Commander

The current standoff in Ladakh between Indian and Chinese troops should not be looked at in isolation just as a skirmish between two armies, says Lt Gen PJS Pannu, a former Commander of the Leh-headquartered 14 Corps in the latest episode of Strategic Insight, a programme done in association with USI, India's oldest military think-tank. The Chinese are very sensitive to any infrastructure development that India does which, in their view threatens the Highway G-219 that connects Tibet to Xinjiang. Coupled with the fear over the Aksai Chin Highway being threatened, is India's decision to create Ladakh as a separate Union territory and China's own aggression born out of worldwide negative sentiments, that has led to the current situation on the Line of Actual Control, Lt Gen Pannu says in this interaction with StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale.

A truly brilliant program, bravo!👏👏👏 This extremely well informed and level headed ex-commander has very clearly explained why the hostile and inhospitable border regions of India-China present very unique and therefore eternal challenges that lead to such military skirmishes in the absence of methods to deal with them. In so doing, he has laid out the basis for a blueprint to work with. He should be the chief border blueprint trainer to educate the military and bureaucracy of both countries to make them understand how it works. 🙏🙏🙏🇮🇳🇨🇳🙏🙏🙏

If you see the other side of the coin there is hope. I'm talking about ongoing disputes with China. Although late but we have started to notice the silent, deeprooted and dangerous moves taken by the that country. Be it economical, strategic, social and so on. Boycott china can be looked as a small move but it is a vision. It will be a tremendous blow to them looking at the power of Indian market. Likewise act east is going to be a game changer provided we change it to act east quickly. Developing Andaman and Nicobar as strategic points will have multifold benefits. India can deliberately raise the issues such as Tibet, Taiwan, Hongkong, Myanmar, Baluchistan etc at international levels and help these countries if possible. This will hit China really bad. And so on... But thank you both for a wonderful talk we are really looking forward to see you soon. 🙏

It was a absolutely non partial analysis without any bias. The Chinese pont of view in safeguarding their strategic interest, difficulty in demarcation of LOC keeping in view the military preference of including heights or ridgelines on to their side including the passes makes this issue almost unresolvable. Loosing one ridge line in boundary demarcation by beurocrartes can put back an army to even 50 km behind and making the area in between volunarable to future incursion or expension of Chinese PLA. Brilliantly put forward by the Commander. Kudos to both the gentleman.

It's such Generals of the Indian Army who are absolutely unruffled with the happenings on the border and maintain a perfect stoic composure and their ability to think, plan and command forces keeping their morale high - convinces me that henceforth PRC cannot have a free run as it used to in the past when it comes to our borders. The recent displays of rock solid response offered by Indian Army to PLA is also commendable and clearly a new phenomenon due to regime change since 2014. All those sceptics, who cry hoarse should ask themselves why such skirmishes and standoffs weren't heard of in the past ?? Simply, bcoz Indian forces were asked to relent everytime (by previous regimes) and things always went in Chinese's favour. This has clearly stopped now. Another reason, which General sahb also pointed out is breakneck speed with which India is constructing civil projects including roads and bridges in border areas, which isn't going down well with Chinese and hence such conflicts. All in all, let's be cautious yet alert and do our bit in hitting China where it hurts most + cutting their moolah ! Jai Hind Jai Hind ki Sena 👍👍👍💪💪💪🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Exactly this give and take mindset has ended up with India having the Chinese on our border and all the Kashmir issue. When we had the 1971 POWs, we gave them all back, similar to 1965. We should have settled Kashmir right then and there never would have been a CPEC corridor or chinese interest in Pakistan. Nipping things in the bud, thinking big picture has never been our past strength and I think we still lack here despite having Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand and more, no true thinktanks.

S R What relationship you're talking about? Its deeply flawed. Fact is PRC (Communist government) feels its inheritance to the Empire that was effaced in 1922. So, they occupied Tibet (government of Nehru' acquised to it, as he felt no other option was at hand). Most Indians aren't aware that Tibet was a vassal state of China, on & off. Yet, the fact remains that China & India, never had common boundary, ever from the earliest (dawn of history) times, till PRC (re-)occupied Tibet in 1950. India got deeply involved in this issue when they hosted Dalai Lam'as government in exile. Please face these facts & conclude.

Thank you, Mr Gokhale for bringing us Lt Gen Pannu's enlightening insights. It seems to me that your discussion with Lt Gen Pannu has opened a door that you did not notice. It's all very well to reaffirm the need for gentlemanly behaviour on borders, both settled and disputed, but at several points in the discussion the obvious next question would have been about how the Chinese think, and within that context, how the Cultural Revolution generation behaves. In other words, there is quite a stark imbalance between examining the minutiae of Indian conduct in respect of protocol, taking what Indians understand as good behaviour as universally self-evident, a baseless assumption. Some Chinese troops under one commander sneaking a few kilometres deeper into India while talks are going on MUST be traced all the way back to how the Chinese perceive themselves in relation to others, and have done over centuries. This is the only gap I see in your otherwise excellent work. You can close that gap, Mr Gokhale, for India's sake.

Is it possible to have a discussion on the feasibility of wresting POK, purely using the military options ? Or would it necessarily lead to disclosure of sensitive information detrimental to Indian military plans ?

While respecting the opinion of commander, It has to be said that main core interest i.e territorial intgerity is not negotiable. Not wanting war cannot be an excuse for continosly harming national interests and the idea of India itself as no mordern nation state can exist for long with a lax attiude towards terriotal integerity.

I concur... If such is the thought process of our military leadership no wonder we get surprised and cant think beyond tactics...he didnt mention even once abt our offensive plans for ladakh and how they can be employed(without divulging exact details)...Instead talked abt diplomacy n Give n take... Must say this Nitin gokhale Chooses his panelist carefully...first was Col. Dinny who Claimed Chinese cannot take finger 4 heights...Only to be countered by Gen panag tht he can walk upto those heights even at his age ...Satellite images proved col. Dinny wrong.... he gets panelist to peddle a certain narative.... No Discussion.. Out n Our propoganda....

It's so much educating , the govt should teach the subject in colleges. So that the new generation will come to know about our country. And also will know how our defence personnel are sacrificing for us.

Very nice discussion but the bottom Line is CCP does not want to settle on a Permanent border, i am sure you have heard the story of Sher and Memna, when Sher accuses Memna of Drinking water from a stream, and Memna says this was the first time he has come here , and to that Sher says it Must have been your father then. So sher was looking for excuses to eat Memna up which he did. This is what ccp is doing , does not want to settle , only is buying time to attack. And India should be ready to go all in . Jai Hind.

Nitin, please refer to it as Indo-Tibetan border and not India China boundary. There is no direct border between India and China. The entire border is with COT ( Chinese Occupied Tibet)

If China doesn’t believe entire Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh as our own then don’t agree with one China policy and recognize Taiwan as separate country and start an embassy there and start diplomatic relashionships. And change the stand of Tibet as a part of China and consider it as a occupied area

In real world more aggressive force gain more, you are already discussing that. Diplomatic settlements can never recover land lost, aggressive force will always take advantage of their first move.

A BOEING 777 WITH 227 PASSENGERS AND 12 CREW MEMBERS .... DISAPPEARED ON MARCH 8 2014 ....DURING A FLIGHT FROM KUALA LUMPUR (MALAYSIA) TO BEIJING (CHINA)...KNOWN AS MALAYSIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT MH370... RECENT REVELATIONS HAD IT THAT ....THE AIRPLANE WAS HIJACKED.... AND LANDED IN SOUTH CHINA VIA HONG KONG...AND ELEMENTS OF THE CCP'S PLA HAD CAPTURED THE PLANE.... TO DISPOSE OFF A TEAM OF MEDICAL DOCTORS ONBOARD... KNOWN FOR DOING ORGAN HARVESTING ON BEHALF OF ZIANG ZEMIN'S RIVAL CCP FACTION....MOST OF THESE CRIMINALS ARE NOW UNDER CUSTODY BY XI JINPING'S CCP REGIME....AND XI JINPING NEVER DISCLOSED THE TRUTH OF THIS EVENT...JUST LIKE THE PANDEMIC. IMAGINE...KILLING A PLANE LOAD OF 239 PEOPLE ...JUST TO WASTE A FEW DOCTORS (PASSENGERS ON THE PLANE) WHO WERE ENGAGED IN HARVESTING HUMAN ORGANS ...AND LATER....THE ORGANS OF THESE 239 DEAD FLIGHT MH370 PASSENGERS WERE SIMILARLY HARVESTED TO PROFIT THE CCP...ON THE SLY. THE ACTS OF TERROR OF THE CCP ABOVE....WARRANTS THAT AMERICA DIG DEEPER INTO THE DAMNING ALLEGATION AND DECLARE CCP A CRIMINAL...TERROR...ORGANISATION PER SE.

Actually China should be happy if India taked over Ladakh areas occupied by Pakistan since China can easily workout transit formalities through this road after India takes over. China can send trucks to Pakistan and already India through this road there by making the road more useful for China.
