India's Democratic Credentials Strengthened By The Outcome, Say

The world's largest democratic exercise is over. India's general elections have concluded with Narendra Modi set to take office as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, albeit as head of a coalition this time, unlike the two previous terms in which he led majority governments. Most analysts have hailed the return of the coalition era in Indian politics after a decade of majority government. Coming days will provide more clarity on the composition of the cabinet.
For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this is unfamiliar territory. For over two decades, he has headed governments with full majority, first as chief minster of Gujarat and then as prime minister in the last 10 years.
Modi 3.0 suggests he may have to curb his instincts, accommodate demands from fickle allies on domestic policies but one aspect in which the new government is likely to continue its previous approach is in the foreign policy space. Salvatore Babones, Associate Professor at the Sydney University in Australia and a keen India observer, feels all talk about backsliding of democracy in India is based on faulty and opaque surveys that do not do justice to the vibrant democracy that India is. Rahul Ray Chaudhary, Senior Fellow for South and Central Asia at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), says in the UK, there is an understanding that India's foreign policy will not change much even if Modi is now heading a coalition. He says Modi may face resistance in domestic affairs but in foreign policy aspect will not get impacted much since the smaller regional parties may not have too many stakes on the international relations front. Both were speaking to Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale.

The survey putting Hong Kong ahead of India. Where no established Journalist is in Jail. Just shows how meaningless and bias the surveys are.

The surveys are very useful tools deliberately manipulating data in order to assist the anti-India propaganda machine funded by Soros and his minions in Canada, Europe, US, and Australia. These tools are used by CNN, ABC, France24, DW, BBC, CBC, Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Columbia, etc..

It always was alive and kicking. It is just that the Congress party and their patrons expected to do badly and so they were seeking to discredit the elections, the institutions and indeed Indian democracy itself.

This is not validation. It is cocking a snook up the West's nose!! A respected 'Western' academic like Prof Babones praising our democracy is just that.😅

The US democracy is very defective. It is widely influenced by the Lobby System, NGOs, armament lobby, corporate honchos, Media Moguls & motivated think tanks which only give US Congresspersons exalted & arrogant importance about themselves rather than the true picture. No wonder, following collapse of USSR in 1991, the US failed miserably to successfully lead the world as the sole surviving super power even for one decade. Its interventions faced spectacular failures in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, SCS & Ukraine won't be different. Economically US slipped under the clutches of Communist China. The US society is vertically divided. Joe Biden did not condemn black lives matter riots & looting on the US streets but rather tacitly supported them by blaming policies of Donald Trump. His comments to the popular black radio host Charlamagne in May, 2020 that if you are black and do not vote for him, you are not black showed that he tacitly encouraged divisions in the US society for votes. Unfair elections are the biggest killers of democracy. Elections must not only be fair but must seem to be fair & must reflect full credibility. That was not the case in the US.Declaration by election authorities that voting irregularity were of no consequence as to alter election results added fuel to the fire & attack on the Capitol was the reprehensible outcome of that. That 197 Republican Congressmen, an overwhelming majority voted against the Impeachment motion against Trump & 147 Republican members of the House voted against certifying the election result even after attack on the Capitol shows genuine feeling about the neutrality of the elections. The US has to streamline its electoral process to restore credibility of its democracy in the world. It has to learn lessons from Election Commission of India.

India needs to grow up. Stop trying to convince the West. India just needs to have it's own true ratings/ index for everything that West measures. Then just follow Indian ratings/ indices. Thats all.

if you notice it is mostly with Indian media and journalists they are in perennial low self-esteem and insecurity - Modi can't change mental make up of some Indians but not very surprised to see most of them in media business

Nitinji you have seen india evolve from a self deprecating, apologetic license- jungle raj into a fast growing, digitally savvy, self cinfident country, pls do a series on how different aspects of india have evolved i terms of ...law n order, road, rail, air networks, poverty, education, economy - from having a limit on the amount of money one could take while travelling abroad to almost ni limit now, employment rates, type of industries, agriculture- level of irrigation, type of crops, supports given to farmers Reason this needs tobe done is, the generation born after 1985 cannot imagine when we tell them the unemployment, bandhs, hartals, standing in ques for hours or waiting days n months for rail tkts, ration, gas n telephone connections, buying cars, running around looking for water n carrying water for long distances...this was in cities where life was supposed to "easier" rural areas were far far worse off

Prof Babones has maintained in the past that the negative impression of our country is given by our own (Indian) intelligentsia. Here he is giving details about the quality of questions and their answers in surveys of the press which again indicates intelligentsia.

There were no concerns, initially. It was a perception from across the oceans, based ona few intellectuals who say a few loose things in their parties.. another point is - why does Prof. Salvatore say India demonstrated the chatacteristics of a "well established Western democracy" as if that is a gold standard. I would rather he just say "well established democracy"...

India is one of the true democracies where every party gets equal representation. US system is flawed where only two parties are dominant and electoral college can produce unpredictable results. Indian democracy is not perfect but it’s very much alive and kicking.
