Interesting information. But before, to correct that China economy grew sharply during covid because while most countries shut down, Chinese industries were still humming along. The supply chain issues were those not produced by China, including vaccines, medical supplies, food as countries hold these supplies. On BRI, we could look from another perspective. Firstly, China is just following like US & Japan to invest in 3rd world nations. And is this really "good or bad" debt trap? I would think is "good debt" because is on infrastructure instead of consumption - roads, ports, airports, hospitals, schools. If you don't take them from China, you will not have infrastructure - for last 50 years and for the next 50 years. The Americans, European, etc are not helping. The takeover of facilities is just a way to "forgive debt and support locals". Example, the ports operating at loss, and after Chinese take over will need to pump in $$$ yearly to keep afloat. This will provide jobs and learning for locals to takeover in time. But with this port, there will be real opportunity to grow, maybe in couple years time. Hope the Chinese would continue to help make this port profitable - like building factories, warehouse etc to create shipping load - economic activities. I see this investment of infrastructure a way to give these countries chance for good economic growth. But still there are lots to do.

Thanks to Nitin Gokhale for this very interesting report on the problems with the BRI and its negative impact on the nations that accepted the infrastructure projects including Sri Lanka. One recalls earlier SNG reports when the Rajapakshas were in power. If they were closely aligned with India, even the Hambantota project could have been taken up as, perhaps, a joint India-Japan project. There are also reports that the U.S. government has taken a more active role in investments in infrastructure and development in Sri Lanka. It would be interesting if SNG could do a story on the current situation in Sri Lanka, with regard to foreign investment particularly from India, Japan and the U.S. Sri Lanka is often spoken of as a strategically- located country in the Indian Ocean region.

Is any airport taken over in Zambia ? We just know about Hambantota which was inaugurated in 2010 much before the launch of BRI. Btw isn't there some sort of resolution achieved with Zambia ? The joint summary of the G-20 Finance ministers' summary this year alluded to it I think.

BRI are camouflaged projects to pursue strategic & economic goals of China. Sri Lanka has ceded Hambantota port to China for 99 yrs. lease along with thousands of acres of surrounding land against write-off of Chinese debt while Pakistan has ceded Gwadar port for 40 yrs. along with sale of controlling 40% stake in its main Karachi stock exchange PSX. Overpriced, dollar-denominated BRI projects are secured after bribing leaders of targeted countries. Malayasia’s Mahathir Mohamad curtailed price of Chinese BRI East Coast Rail Link Project to be built by China Communications Construction Company from $20 Bn to just 11 Bn by renegotiating its correct price which means the original price had inbuilt component of 82% bribe ( 9Bn out of 11 Bn). Moreover, Chinese employ their own labor & machinery in BRI paying them largely in Yuan but dollars are charged as project cost from the host country,

Economy of a country gives them the power to make or break a country that’s vulnerable. Examples - Iran was always controlled by Americans in terms oil embargo. The participant countries willingly joined BRI proggramm on their own will. It is a win win situation where the host countries will get much needed infrastructures and thr chinese will get easy access into these areas to transport its goods around the world. If the host countries cannot repay the cost of infra developed by china they have the option of leasing to china. Sri lanka had leased its china built Hambontota harbour to china and now we see chinese navy regularly visiting and spying on india😂😂
