Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, celebrates his 89th birthday today, July 6, 2024. While recovering from knee replacement surgery, in the U.S., he issued a video message, "thanking everyone" for their wishes and prayers. "I did my best while I was in Tibet," he said, "and after coming into exile, I have served to the best of my ability." He went on to reassure the world that he is "doing very well." On March 31, 1959, the Dalai Lama entered India in Tawang after fleeing the Potala Palace in Lhasa and the Chinese occupation of his homeland. He has never gone back.
