I know it sounds stupid, but when you're out on the water alone, it's a really good idea to wear a life vest with a whistle. Yeah, you're going really slow in a stable boat in calm conditions, but if you fall out and the boat gets away from you, or if you have any kind of medical emergency, it can be the difference between staying alive until help arrives, or drowning cold and alone. You can 3d print a whistle and attach it to the vest. Especially if the water is cold. It might make you feel silly, but I much prefer looking silly and knowing I'm looking out for my own safety.

And for your own sake. At least wear a floating west when you're alone. Most people stop making youtube videos if they drown, so please dont do that.

Pretty easy to implement too. Just put a tether on a life jacket harness and then use a tension sensor. When it detects tension on the lifeline, it would just kill the motors and need to be manually reset.

@@SchwaAlien Where I live it's not that uncommon to have at least one multicar pileup on the highway when winter rolls around and people have somehow completely forgotten how to drive in snow over the course of 7 months. Once most of the cars on the road are electric and there's another bad pileup, at some point I'm expecting an inevitable lithium volcano to erupt. I also wonder if it's more practical to extinguish that fire or just build a new section of highway to go around it and treat it as an interesting new landmark.

I noticed your rudder was constantly correcting as you were going basically straight. It would be cool if you used differential thrust on your 2 motors for the minor corrections when you are going straight and reserve the rudder control for when the differential thrust can't keep up or you are making a waypoint turn. Manual steering is not fun on these distances . and about the differential thrust . wouldn’t it just draw more power constantly accelerating the props in the water than one motor steering like it is now ?

@@muppie5111 The props should use about the same power as currently (no pun intended). Daniel sets the speed now by the voltage for the speed he wants divided 50/50 between each motor. The only difference would be how it is split, 60/40, 70/30, etc. I would assume the majority of course corrections are because of a side wind. In that case it could learn to make the split for wind adjustment (say 67/33) for the base value and then do minor adjustments from there.

@@Lizlodude That's how regular props work, regardless of what they are doing with the hull and midsections they are mounted to. Also the reason people are so hyped up on toroidal props right now, because they throw less vortices.

@@Lizlodude That is cavitation, albeit minimal. But, cavitation all the same. Fun fact: Cavitation comes about not by something catching air from the surface of the water, but from a reduction in pressure. The lower the pressure a given body of water is in, the lower its boiling temperature will be. Cavitation is essentially the water literally boiling in a very localised low pressure zone (as created by the tips of the propellers' blades).

Fun fact to give you an idea about energy densities: assuming a total system efficiency of 80% for your current setup (because of the converters etc) and assuming you would discharge the batteries only to 25% (83 miles out of max 111 miles) your total propulsion power output would have been about 8.77kWh. Assuming a total system efficiency for a Diesel setup of 33% you'd need about 2kg (or 4.4lbs) of Diesel for the same power output in the same conditions. Of course the whole setup without fuel would be heavier than the electrical setup without batteries, but the actual weight would still be quite a bit lighter.

Landmark Info The athletic center you saw was the Seahawks training center. The contaminated area is probably the old Barbee Mill (this one I don't know for sure) The Boeing plant you saw is at Renton Municipal Airport. There is a Boeing Feild, but it is in Seattle. That plant only does 737 planes, and does the full assembly at a rate of more than 1 per day. Growing up in the area we pronounced Seward park like sewer, with a d at the end. I have not actually looked up the original name, but everyone else pronounces it the same way. Great video. I like your ingenuity, creativity, and long format videos. You may have enough misc for your projects, but I have some industrial surplus, if you need current transducers, contractors, heavy wires, and other stuff.

Recommendation for when you put the solar panels on. I saw on your diagram you plan on putting them out to each side. How about at the same width, you put them above your head on a rack, allowing you to also cover the middle of the boat with panels. You're going to gave to build a frame to hold the panels, might as well lift it up.

Good project, in the other video you said that the drivers got hot after a while. I have one just like it on my electric bike and what I have done is sanded the side where the 3 screws are, put thermal putty and I have put an aluminum heatsink from an old amplifier. it does not heat up at all.

I know it has been mentioned in the comments of one of your other videos, but I would mention it again: If your boat is going faster than you can swim, which it very easily can, and you are falling over board, then you have a big problem. You are missing the remote to stop your boat, so you can't get back to it. The answer is what every single pilot of a motorized sailing vesel need to have: A dead mans switch. Stupid name, because you avoid dying, if you have one. But seriously, you need one. Back in the good old days we had a strap round our hand going to the engine, where it pulled a switch, if you pulled the strap. Today they are mostly wireless. Either that or a rope round your waist. I would prefer the first solution :-) Safe sailing! I am looking forward to see your solar panel adventures :-)

Though there's a few things I'd like to add to the safety recommendations for next time you take this thing for a spin. 1) Safety line: This will probably be redundant if you install some sort of "Human Overboard" system to stop the boat from getting to far away on its own power, but would still be nice to know it can't get away from you. Perhapse you could put the two systems together. 2) Lights: You should probably put some lights on your boat for if you end up sailing at night again so other boats don't crash into you. Even one light will probably be good enough. 3) Life Jacket: It's a lot harder to swim to a place then it looks, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. 4) Emergency oars and flags: In case you run out of power so you can either get yourself somewhere or signal for help.

You might want to consider installing a motion detector, that will stop the autopilot if no motion is detected for a minute...on your boat because if you go overboard it will keep driving and you may not be able to catch up. Also you could program an audible beep 5 seconds before big turns so you don't lose your balance.

As nice a test platform as the boat is, and it is really really cool, as you keep reminding us, the main drawback is the hull design. You can see it by the wattage needed to go from 1.7m/s to 2m/s vs 2ms to 2.7m/s. That jump in wattage per m/s is so stark, and really shows how inefficient the flat bottomed hull design is when you're not on a plane. It'd be interesting to see a similar system on a V-hull, and compare battery use. It might even be worth thinking about sticking it on a modified Hobie Cat (small catamaran) or the like to further reduce friction.

From a dinghy sailing perspective, moving the centre of gravity further forward in the boat will lift the stern out of the water , this prevents it from "digging a hole" and increases efficiency , hopefully that might help

I was a tug captain in that area for 27 years. Also did search and rescue in the Coast Guard at Westport and Seattle for 6 years. Wearing a life jacket damned near got me killed many times. In and out of the cut with 200'-400' of gravel and freight barges often loaded to 12,000 tons. The Duck Dodge and tugboats . Geeeez! Moving ships in and out of dry-dock. Boy we hated the sailboats most, then the rowing shells, and finally the clueless. The commercial tug boater's mindset is out of phase with most pleasure boaters. The sailboaters never did get it. (I'm sure it was the 5% that just had to get in our way) "I'm a sailboater!!!! I have the right of way!!!! As they slid down the side of the barge. I will say, all your videos are exciting and intriguing. That is one of the coolest things I've seen on that waterway. Consider nozzles around the props. Keep revolutions under 200 RPM. And hang tires all around your skiff! Become one with the tug! ;-)

Not sure if you've heard of Sharrow Marine but they're a fairly new boat propeller company that is bringing a new prop design to the consumer market using some cool geometry. It would be awesome if you were able to replicate the design they developed and show if there is a benefit in propulsion and efficiency based on the design. They've won all kinds of innovation awards over the last 2 years, so it seems like promising tech involved.

I came here to suggest that. I've been looking at the drone prop variant from MIT that was making the rounds recently. The Sharrow is more than double the efficiency of a standard prop when just trolling along at half throttle. Traditional 15" prop 43% at 3000 RPM vs 87% for the Sharrow. Sharrows cost a fortune because they're worth it. I you run a fishing or touring boat business, the fuel savings would recoup the cost in no time. There are 3D models of Sharrow-styled props out there. At low or high RPM the Sharrow still improves but much less so than the midrange.

Hey Daniel I read recently that theres no such thing as a battery charging and discharging at the same time. If the battery is running something, and you plug in a charger, the charger will take over running the thing, and the leftover power will charge the battery. If the thing is drawing more than the charger can produce, the power from the charger goes to the thing running, and is supplemented by the battery

@ct1762 a 13' whaler is around 300lbs, and well over 400 if it has seats, center console or the foam is waterlogged. The boats I mentioned are around 100lbs so it is quite heavy comparatively. That is a huge difference if you're trying to plane with a low ammount of power.

It can get pretty windy in the evenings, I don't really like running when it's dark out there. I can't believe you went that far that slow, that would be absolutely brutal. That's a decent trip at 30 mph

You should try 3D printing a toroidal propeller. They claim it to be more efficient and silent. I watch all your videos and find them educational and interesting. Congratulations! 👍

They were developed for quad drones, so quite different usage than a propeller used in water. A drone prop spins very fast in a light medium while a boat prop spins a lot slower in a comparatively much heavier medium. This changes what profile will work for the blades, what the angle of attack should be, the diameter, the blade area, in short everything changes. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, just that it wont be as easy as using the same prop, just in water. Another KZbinr, Major Hardware if I remember correctly, tried printing a version that could be used as a regular fan and the results were not encouraging. But again, there's a huge difference in designing a prop that will spin very fast and one that will spin at say a thousand RPM or so. There's also the fact that the fans he test are ducted which can influence the efficiency. But mostly it's a new design with unknown properties and very little information on the exact shape and angle of attack used. So it could just be a case of discovering the right parameters.

I’d love to see how higher aspect ratio props would work for these low speeds. As long as you can keep the tip speed low enough to avoid cavitation they should be much more efficient.

The cool little swirls around your propeller tips, that's not cavitation, is it? It's just a bit of ventilation from when the prop moves through some of the bubbles made by your wake, right?

@@DaimyoD0 Directional pressure on the hull vary by wind and waves which constantly change. This transfers to varying load pressure on the prop resulting in higher and lower chances for momentary cavitation? Take this with a grain of salt. I'm not a fluid dynamics expert, but I do pretend to be one on the internet occasionally.

You should try making Toroidial propellers, you have all the basic capabilities to make such a prop. if done properly they could have promising results in efficiency. plus they would look really cool.

*Serious question* Is there much risk that any of those batteries could randomly catch fire or even explode? I really want to convert my camper van to lithium, but after watching videos of lithium battery fires, seeing how long they burn and how impossible they are to put out, makes me honestly terrified of lithium batteries.

Lithium batteries are like bombs. I was charging mine a while ago with correct voltage and current and it decided to burn my bed down and almost my house. These things are really dangerous. I had a cough for a week and since then I NEVER charged my lithium stuff indoors.. yeah well, most van/camping/boating people will tell you its fine - but some die. I think its not worth the risk as of 2023.
