TJFNYC212 Different tonality as the Intermezzo featuring #2 in Brahms' opus 118 is in A Minor but.... you are right: there is a distinct similarity in the melancholic character.... :o)

The first piece is marked Andante - it's played here far too slowly.

To your comment: A tempo indication is proportional with the indicated meter of the piece plus the character indication of the composer. In our case, the meter is 4/4 which means four "beats" per measure. If one plays the piece as you suggest, the whole work will be perceived in an "alla breve" context, meaning two half notes per measure instead of four quarter notes per measure. There is a tremendous difference between the meter 4/4 and the same meter performed as "alla breve". The composer's character indication -- teneramente (tenderly) -- must also be taken into consideration. As to metronome markings, music history provides ample evidence that one and the same piece of music may be played advantageously at various tempi. A performance in which the inflections of the sound volume, sound quality and rhythmic inflections (subtle rubati) are minimal, a faster tempo may work well. But a performance such as this one which incorporates a large palette of sound shadings and other expressive means will loose its charm if performed at a faster tempo. With today's technical means it is possible to speed up a performance without changing the original pitch. So I suggest to you that you do just that, and listen to my performance at the speed at which you believe it should have been performed. You will soon notice that at a faster playback my performance will sound artificial, because the very many details of sound color and rhythmic inflection will no longer be perceived in their true musical context. Best regards, Tibor Szasz
