Nine year-old Molly saw the damage that disposable plastics do to the ocean, and knew she had to do something. With all the innocence of youth, she set about convincing schools to remove single use plastic straws from their tuckshops. Molly Steer is 9 years old and is in grade 4 at school in Cairns. When she isn't trying to remove plastics from the ocean she enjoys dancing, swimming and spending time with her family. This girl does not have a point. Sure, less plastic in the ocean will help, but it’s a very very low impact compared to what’s really going on here. taiji and bluefin definitely paid off this presentation. “Put a child on there and mention the single time a straw in a turtle’s nose”. Lies and deceptions playing off you’re emotions. Try seeing the video of like 5 sea turtles in a fishing net they ended up killing for greed. That’s just one net too. She says “wrapped around the earth 4 times” try 500 times around a day with fishing nets. Think about that the next time you eat fish.

Very important to remember that there isn't a sensible option for reusable straws for disabled people. Anything hard is out, because it's an injury risk. Paper is out because it's not hot liquid safe. Silicone has an unpleasant texture and it's non positionable.

Dude silicone is flimsy and you can order it bent, and because of the soft texture and bendableness, it is even safer for them to use. So yes, there is an ecofriendly alternative.

Turns out paper straws have toxic chemicals like perfluoroalkyl and polyluoroalkyl(PFAS) in them that cause like 30 different health issues including lower birth weight, thyroid disease, increased cholesterol levels, liver damage, kidney cancer, and testicular cancer and lowers testosterone levels. Isn't that wonderful.

Today my English teacher showed us this video. I used to be someone who would use plastic straws everyday. One day I learned that a turtle got a straw stuck in it’s nose, like you mentioned. I wasn’t really concern until I learned that thousands of sea animals also go through this horrible situation. Molly thanks so much for the inspiration. My daughter is also determined to change things at her school. She had a meeting with the principal who said he is not prepared to put in paper straws because the preppies would find it too difficult to drink ( slushies). Change takes time and I wondered if there an alternative? We will keep fighting the cause.

If all people in the planet didn't consume straws aymore, it would be a very positive change. I will personally change and not use plastic straws anymore, if I have the chance, i'll create awareness for other people to start doing the same.

Well done Molly. I just saw you on ABC TV tonight in part 1 of "War on Waste" series. I have a reusable cup in my room which I will now take to the shops in my cloth shopping bag I have used for over a decade. I will use the cup to decant my milk shake in Summer from the aluminium mixing container but no straw. I have never used takeaway coffee cups preferring to drink out of a proper china cup and sauce for my one or two coffees per day at the cafes. You are an inspiration and a very good public speaker too. Update: I bought some aluminium straws recently on eBay.
