Tomás is 50 years old and has been a shoe shiner for 36 years, since the age of 14 when he moved to Mexico City.
Tomas works with a traditional shoe shine box. He carries his shoe shine box around San Rafael and Santa Maria La Ribera neighbourhoods and visits many office buildings.

Hi Kat! I like Tomas' shoe shining techniques. Tomas initially performed a thorough cleaning. This is important to do before applying any color. Tomas then applied red color to all of the obviously dull places. And then Tomas finished by applying neutral color wax and then buffing the wax to a very nice shine. The wax most likely is carnauba wax which is a hard wax. Look at your before and after photos at 10:24 in your video. Do you see how the creases have turned a bit white in the before photo? This is because carnauba wax cracks and turns white when the creases flex. On shoes like this, I would apply a wax polish which either mostly or entirely consists of beeswax onto the straps and the areas which flex and crease. This will prevent the white color in the creases. I would then apply a carnauba wax on the tips and heels of these shoes. For creases which have turned a bit white, you can heat those areas with a hair dryer in order to melt the carnauba wax. Heat until the white color in the creases disappears. Then let the shoe cool down for a couple of minutes and buff with a cloth or a brush or a cotton sock. This is a quick way to get rid of the white or milky color of the creases, especially when you are traveling.
