If you have no other option. A trick is to go about a foot from the murky water edge. Dig a small pit and let it fill with water, then use that. Its a slight way to moderately filter out solids. You'll still want to filter it/boil it after but it might help with the issue he's talking about.

If you look at water treatment plants for cities the steps are basically, 1. Bag on tree(floculant) 2. Filters(straw) 3. Chemical treatment. So he's right, the straw wouldn't be enough.
