The Korean title, translated directly, is more like compulsion or obsession. And it actually relates to both being obsessed with work. Chan and Hyunjin are known for staying up late working on songs or choreo, never getting enough rest. But left it open enough to be interpreted by the listener. However it’s interpreted it’s definitely 🔥! Loved your reaction as always! Can’t wait for the next one! The new album drops in 17 more days! So excited for this comeback! The members themselves wrote and produced the song, they had a short series called Song camp where they got in units and showed a bit of the process of brainstorming to create the songs, Hyunjin and Bang Chan consider themselves workaholics so they gave it the meaning of talking to themselves and the "person" they can't leave alone is their work, they wanted to make it sexy so they show how they feel about work expressing it as an obsession for someone

They're so slick with it. Without thinking about it, it sounds like a toxic relationship. The video is sexy asf but then you realize it's Stray Kids and there's a deeper meaning. Not so much about a romantic relationship but more about their work and passion for what they do. There's several ways you can look at it. The fact that there's not just one meaning is amazing to me. This song is very addicting as well. Chan did such a great job producing the instrumentals. Gawd they're so talented

This is literally top 3 songs for me. I love the production, the arrangement, the vocals are immaculate. Hyunjin and Chans acting and the overall aesthetic of the video is phenomenal

My favorite and personal interpretation of Red Lights & the MV is that of struggling with sleeping disorders like insomnia, stress dreams, and sleep paralysis. Bang Chan has talked about his insomnia before and he's also described in a vlive how he recently tried to go to sleep early around 10pm, but ended up having nightmares and actually falling into real sleep around 1am. He said that he would start to drift off and then start thinking about "scary stuff" (direct quote; i rewatched the clip) and realized he was about to fall into a nightmare and would force himself back awake. Essentially, fighting against stress dreams/nightmares for literal hours before actually falling asleep. Then, in Hyunjin's case, he is a very deep sleeper and has talked about an experience in which he had sleep paralysis and saw a demon walk out of his closet and stand over him--kind of like how Chan stands over him on the bed in this video. Everything about this video feels like a stress dream/nightmare or sleep paralysis experience to me. The chains, the confinement, the haziness and the looming presence while you're trapped on your bed unable to move. The anxiety of it all. It's a bit "Bury A Friend" by Billie Eilish, but not as violent. Chan's also a workaholic and the lines, "No matter how hard I try to run away, set the mic up / until the moon falls asleep, even deeper" makes me think of him spending late night hours in his studio, working and recording guides and not sleeping.

He got it right its about something toxic. More accurately, the artist wrote this song about them being workaholic. They love doing their job so much that they barely get much sleep. And they purposely wrote it as vague as possible so this song can have our own meaning to it. Bangchan's part has only one line that make it obvious "Even if I struggle to run away from you, set the mic up until the moon falls "

One of the analysis has to do with fighting with yourself, with your obsession to work or to some feelings we have inside and that we cannot let go (Hyunjin mentioned the word "Compulsion" in his episode of "Howl in Harmony" where they show a bit of the process ok making this song), they represent that in dancing and doing everything mirrored, like Shmo pointed out, its fire 🔥

Red Lights is actually the recording lights in the recording booth. They are both workaholic. The red string of fate means that is their destiny to be working that hard. They did an entire episode writing this song and explaining it.

Thank you for reacting to this! On March 18, they will release a new album and it’s called Oddinary. It’s a wordplay basically saying they are not ordinary but ODDinary. The have a 3-minute full trailer released and I swear you will love it! Hoping for it to make you somehow look forward to their upcoming release. 💖 Also, this song was made by Chan and Hyunjin themselves. They do sub groups and make songs and the other two groups made a ballad and a fun song. This way, they are able to practice their song producing/writing skills because they can all do that, and they can also show that they just really have diversity in their music.

Love your take on red lights. I interpreted it as Hyunjin taking control over his cravings. At the beginning Chan has the chain around Hyunjin and when they do their choreographed dance in the hallways they are side by side identical to reach other. Also when Hyunjin is choking Chan it’s not with much force or grip, while Chan is much more forceful. Then they meet at the table and after that Hyunjin is only tied with ropes which shows less restraint that chains, indicating he’s gaining more control. After that their synchronized dance shows that Hyunjin is closer to the camera than Chan like he’s getting away from him, and then at the end Hyunjin has his hand around Chan’s neck so now he’s in control. I thought this was a beautifully made song and video.

They originally wrote the song about being obsessed with work. Chan with making music and Hyunjin with dancing but they want the fans to interpret it in their own way and apply it to their own life experience. But basically it’s about obsession and what ever that means to you.
