most of pc software creates files when it's run. not all files are created during the instalation. very often are these files stored in a folder called "app data". it's hidden by default, and it's located in c - users - [name of your user] - app data. in there are 3 folders: local, locallow and roaming. i don't know anything about them, different apps choose different folders for their additional files. in the "local" folder is a folder called "temp", there is where apps store temporary files, which are deleted by the system, i don't know how often, but you can delete them yourself if you want. when you first run gra sa it creates numerous folders, one example is that it creates a folder in your "documents" folder, where you can paste your music and then tune to it on the ingame radio. and some other things, i don't remember anymore. screenshots? or save files? so next time you run the game it checks for these folders and files and if they don't exist it creates them, if they do it just uses the existing ones. the files are associated not only to an application, but to where in the drive the application is located. so when the system was looking for files associated with an app that was located in gta sa folder, it found them and used them, however they were corrupt. but when he renamed the location of the app, the system searched for files associated with an application located in gta sa v2, it couldn't find any, and so it created fresh ones for an application that is located in gta sa v2 folder, and so the problem was fixed by ditching the corrupt files. the better way would be to just delete those files so the game creates new ones instead of renaming the folder

Apparently the frame limiter being off can cause the explosion crash. EDIT: It was probably the game looking in the registry for the particle effects. Renaming the folder meant it couldn't find the original folder from the registry entry, so it worked fine.

That makes so little sense. Why would you store filepaths that are in the working directory when you can look into the CWD directly? I'd understand if this was some user-specific directory with config/saves, but I've never encountered CWD references in the registry. Why would they be there even? Also, let's assume that something like that exists - wouldn't the game then override it with the new directory after renaming? Obviously it doesn't, but that would also imply that it has a separate set of regkeys for each directory you run the game from, which is just an insane proposition.

That's the weirdest way to fix a bug I've ever seen, and I've spent countless hours as a child googling and troubleshooting Maplestory every time it broke every other week.

Just a plausible guess, but somehow the game saved a corrupted partition and it uses the file name as a pointer. The game's code probably does some sort of if-else function when cars explode to check for something and it branches to some point in memory based on a fixed offset that is "out of bounds". The OS is not allowing the game to access that chunk of memory, thus killing the application.

I wonder if changing the folder name fix it because the savegame was trying to read the script from another folder that didn't exist. Maybe the savefile was kinda corrupted and changing the folder name made it fix itself? I am not a programmer but I think that could be.

Hmmm, perhaps the thing that was causing the crash was reffering to the game path? Video cards can use specific settings for certain exe files, for example. So renaming the folder made the path to exe different, thus config wasn't applied, thus no crash. Still doesn't explain what changed to cause the crash in the first place.
