Many people overlook a pretty awesome secondary use for a NAS - media streaming! But that isn't quite so useful if you can't view those files away from home...

Bart Bols It absolutely is! Metro may be a shit UI for a keyboard-and-mouse environment, but it is utter heaven on a touch screen, and overall WP is just way more organised and intuitive to use than iOS, and way, way, way more so than Android. It's quite ironic, given that Microsoft was always the company to hide important settings deep within menu after menu, but now it's Google that's doing that with Android, and Microsoft has got it absolutely spot-on!

+Robert Faber I have a Windows 10 tablet. I would just like to add that in my experience it is anything but heaven. But once you know the workarounds it is OK at best, certainly very functional if you switch to desktop apps since the modern UI ones mostly suck.

+Skylord12345 srry I didn't know this, I have only tried this on android tablets/phones. I'm not even sure if it will work on an iOS device. What I do on my Windows machines anyways is just have the files in a shared folder on the network. This is also how I add media to the PLEX server, having a shared folder and uploading media to that, the PLEX will auto refresh with new content. I watch it on a Amazon Fire TV (which the PLEX Lifetime Pass also works on).

I personally love Plex, even with some of its limitations. It's even better if you can manage to link it up with something like SickRage and Transmission. That way SickRage can keep track of the shows you want to watch, download them automatically when they're available in the quality you want, rename the files to a standard format and place them into organized folders for your Plex server to read. Yes, this isn't exactly legal, but my cable company charging $15 a month for a DVR because they use a proprietary tuner module should be (and *is* going to become) illegal too.

Surprised you didn't mention Emby(formerly Media Browser). It has a similar pay model to Plex but have found if you like using Kodi as the front end, it is leaps and bounds more flexible than Plex is. Emby is easily elegant and cross platform compatible. I had no problem paying for Premier.

Linus, thank you for being honest, and being open about how and why you use these services. I use PLEX and am in love with it, but it's a grey area where some content creators shy away from. You're a good guy, and that video was very helpful for those who truly do own the physical content, but struggle to get it on their device. iOS in particular is a real pain in the butt to play back your content unless it is in .mp4 format.

I recently switched to Plex after using MediaBrowser/Emby for many years. There are a lot of nice power-user oriented features (like QuickSync-powered transcoding support) as well as clients for a ton of platforms. The biggest downside is that since it's constantly being developed, it's not always as stable. It also takes a lot more work to get going.

I've been working to rip our media collection at home using Plex and stumbled across your video Linus-- Like minds :-) Actually took the plunge on a simple ITX PC to handle transcoding in real time over the net rather than a NAS. Cost me ~$240 and highly recommend it. Filebot is a good utility for renaming your content to match the databases Plex uses for show data, but it can sometimes be a chore. Great video!

The Plex premium account does make it super easy to access your library from outside your network without any manual router configuration, so long as your router has the right capabilities. It will also ensure that the connection to your server from the outside world is TLS encrypted. As for the apps though, I have had plenty of issues with the apps for both Playstation 3 and 4 and and up using the DLNA capabilities more often than the apps.

You inspired me a few months ago to create a FreeNAS NAS from an old DELL PRECISION 390 i had lying around as a hobby project and I ended up using it daily, since then i upgraded the CPU to the maximum one it supported Q6600 (took some searching to find one because it's old) and i'll keep adding 4TB drives to it untill it will have no more sata ports. I installed on it Plex, Owncloud, TraccarGPS server, BtSync and PHPvirtualbox. -The plex media server has everythiing i could ever want from a streaming server. -BtSync is great for backing up folders or even entire program folders, and I keep my Raspberry Pi music player synced with the music I want. -Traccar keeps track of my phone(trough app) and car(trough a recovered GPS device and reprogramed) -Owncloud is useful when I have to send large files to clients, i previously used file transfer services like wetransfer -And PHPvirtualbox is for running long tasks that require a windows machine without me having to keep my laptop opened. So thanks I guess and keep up the good work!

I think an honorable mention should be Kodi (XBMC). It is really good at viewing local content, as well as a lot of streaming content options through various repositories. It can be installed on a lot of different systems, and even sideloaded on ones that aren't natively available. If you are an intermediate to advanced computer user, then I would highly suggest looking into Kodi. I will say the remote streaming option isn't as available as Plex. And yes, Plex is the king in this domain. I have been using it for many years as my primary audio/video solution.

@mathewj5133
@mathewj5133 8 жыл бұрын
Kodi/XBMC doesn't transcode, without transcoding it's really hard to play on many older devices and even some newer devices. And Plex does so much more out of box, it syncs progress, recommends what to watch, etc. Kodi can do these things but requires a lot of tinkering (like an MySQL database for syncing progress, and Trakt.tv doesn't work well). And Kodi is still just a front-end, it's nothing like Plex, except for it's Media Center UI (And of course some of it's older front-ends being built upon XBMC). And to avoid mislabeling videos, or if you just don't care for metadata and all that fancy stuff just add your files as "Personal Media". There are other solutions like Universal Media Center, but it's clunky and it's transcoding abilities are piss poor, and it has a bunch of more problems, but some people love it. There's also an app called Qloud Media, it's pretty good, and has a functional free version. Oh then there's also Ember. Never used it, tried the app, had to install some kind of compatibility layer. Didn't like it. If you don't care for transcoding or any of that fancy stuff just use normal smb server/windows file sharing to share the folder which contains all your media, and use a file manager with smb support to access them, and play using any video player app, like MxPlayer or something. BTW Kodi app will eat up your device storage so unless you have a lot of space to spare don't use it for this purpose. The best part about Plex is that you don't need an app, just point the browser on your device to the IP address of the device that's hosting the Plex Server, followed by :32400/web/index.html, add that as a shortcut to your desktop on your phone and now you have a "Plex App" Icon. But the app has it's own unique features like the ones mentioned in the video, plus the ability to use it as a remote for any other Plex device on the same network.

+Magnatron I was thinking something like a hamachi setup would work quite well for this if you upload is decent enough. I personally don't use plex because I would have to rename several hudred thousand files to follow their naming scheme for setup which is something I am NOT willing to do. IO just use basic windows sharing on my desktop and use ES File Explorer on my android devices to access the files and use MX Player for playback. As for watching it on the big screen that is what CCC+MPC-HC is for on my laptop hooked up via a Displayport to HDMI cable since my laptop only has displayport out since its a business class laptop. Wireless mouse for pause and play works perfectly fine for me.with the laptop. Having the laptop even allows me to access things like hulu free on my TVs since I don't pay for it meaning I don't have access to any of the apps. Also use MakeMKV to rip my videos to a 1:1 rip using the bluray drive on my dekstop.

+S4Sx4NDY There are a plethora of bitrate profiles you can switch on the fly, so a basic 1mb upload could do 480p streams. If you have a slightly upgraded broadband like 5mbps, you can do quality 720p no problem. On the flip side, you can get some very watchable video over 3g. Can someone give me an advice? Sorry for the bad english onwards, but I think I really need one as of now. Lately, I noticed that my girlfriend had lots of calls on her phone, and when I ask who is it, she always hungs it up quickly and she said it's one of her friends/business contacts. I also noticed that recently, she goes home in our rented apartment late, and when I ask why was she late, she always tell me that she went overtime because of her team building meet, although when I checked her slip, she had no overtime fee and I was a bit suprised since as far as I know, they didn't had any team building meets since 3 months ago. So, I went to her boss and asked about this, but her boss said that they only did team building meets only one time with her co-office mates a long time ago (which confirms that I was right), and as an extra, she's been absent on that meet, and her boss told me that she's been absent in her work a couple of days as well. The next day, she went out and told me she'll be attending her "urgent team building meet", so, keeping a distance, I followed her with my motorbike, and not far away from our place, a man fetched her on his car. I stopped my motorbike from a distance to make sure they won't hear me and observed them, and when they were going to drive out, I was about to follow then but when I start the engine, it died on me. So I want to ask for advice, where would the problem be? Is it the spark plug that caused the starting to fail, or is it on the main engine? The clutch, perhaps? Please give me a good advice. Thanks for noticing.

I use a Kingston MobileLite Wireless G2 (since, replaced by the G3), hooked up to a 512gb USB thumb drive, and a 256gb SD card. By adding an external battery, I used this as an intake device from a stills camera to a hight capacity thumb drive and the SD card as backup, though this is too slow with modern cameras, so its back to being used for what it was designed for.

Also available as an option: Serviio. Transcoding DLNA (and better than Plex's transcoding support) so you don't need an external player app, just a DLNA client, which most "Smart" TVs, XBox 360 and PS3 have these days.

even google drive will work and its free. Just install google drive on your device and will play any vidio on your device and you can download it in any format to your device. PLEX is bad in searching for something you need that u placed there

I'm one of those people for whom a second hand hardware NAS makes sense. I do photography and videography and I need lots of storage with the option to easily expand in the future. At the moment building my own system is the cheapest alternative that offers the versatility I need.

You should revisit this for 2018, where a lot of this stuff is not needed. The NAS systems now include 4K streaming, backups, file-access, transcoding, etc... Even full-out apps. Without limits to devices. (Works on almost all TVs that can stream or read files. Including all phones and all computers.)

thank you for also recommending some ripping programs as my first foray into ahem "content reworking" ended in me using some trial-ware that ultimately ruined my favorite/guinea pig DVD. one try and failed and off my applications it went.

Linus have you ever tried Playon for media streaming, I've had pretty good luck with it, and it's little brother software playlater. It uses VLC as its backbone for video playback and support for different types of files. I will be honest I haven't tried setting it up on a NAS yet, as I am still in the process of buying the hardware for it.

For local wi-fi media streaming to a Chromecast-enabled TV, I prefer the much simpler low-overhead Android LocalCast app accessing Samba or Windows shares via SMB.
