It needs more work doing to it. For a first attempt it's not bad. These exercises demonstrate just how difficult it is to get to the stage that Gerhart Richter was, how accomplished he was to do this kind of art.

Might I suggest that you put a little paint on the canvas first, then use the trowel - at an angle - and pull it though and along the canvas. That works best to get an effect like Richters.

Yes I’ve realized that it was too flat - which is what created the suction- but I also like experimenting to see what effects that creates as well.

I come from a different understanding of what art is. And have been trying to get a better understanding of "abstract". it looks like the process of pouring and smearing paint and calling it art....which wasn't inspired by emotion and will never invoke it. Recently, however, I've learned that certain patterns can enhance an area if the right color compliments are present. They really can. Opening my mind. I tell my artist friend nay-sayers this. But, you know. Nowadays, after completing a commissioned rendering, I look at the messy blotted pallet and think, "hmm?" 🎨
@doriangray7723

I hear ya. Apparently, this is the art anybody can do. There are far too many people doing this as well, because they can. It is not something you could make a living doing. I mean, why would I buy this piece of art when I can not only do it myself but also get enjoyment from doing it. My point is it is enjoyment and fun and anyone can do it, of course, if they can afford the materials. On the other side of the abstract coin, there are abstract artists who have developed great skills, and abstract art ranges from simple to more difficult techniques. I say let people have access to knowledge and resources rather than keeping them poor and refusing access to the resources. If every 2 years old got a guitar and was instructed and disciplined to play every day and taught the basics upward, there would be no extraordinary people. We all would be excellent musicians or whatever we were trained up in. Unfortunately, most of humanity has no access to the resources God gave ALL. The murderers and ruthless stole the resources from the majority. Some humans don't even have clean water. Smh When will humanity learn the way of Christ and abide in it?

I’m glad you’re starting to open your mind but as a lifelong traditional artist who focused on portraiture and landscapes who then was hit by the genetic connective tissue disorder I didn’t know I had and was left virtually unable to make the art I used to without days and days of increased pain, I finally did what I feel the universe had been pushing me to do which was explore abstract. I had resisted this w every fiber of my being bc I held the same opinion you do now. Well when I finally started trying I quickly realized that if anything abstract is more difficult than more figurative work. I was hit w a wall of understanding that I had been a self righteous elitist my entire life. Dismissing abstract work and talking down to anyone who liked it. The way you speak of it and even putting the word abstract in quotations implies that, although you are starting to change your mind, you still do not see abstract as art, and more of a hobby, by people who can’t do “real art” , a hobby for the non-artist. Try to remember that you too can become disabled at any time and if you found yourself unable to paint the way you do now would you give up art completely? Or would you find a way to do what you love and possibly discover that you were wrong your entire life? And ask yourself this question as well are disabled artists not artists just because they can’t paint a portrait or perfect landscape?

Yes it works with acrylic paint, art paint or house paint, and I think it's less sticky so easier to pull through. If it starts to tack you can barely spritz it with water. But when the paint does tack and pull up several layers that's one of the desired effects. Main thing - secure your canvas.

Cool. I was intrigued as to the use of enamel paints. 1. Why the choice of medium, does it hold up well on a canvas. 2. I can understand why you wanted the door open because of fumes. Are these oil based? 3. Thinking this would be great if done on a panel of some sort, with the enamel paints it would be suitable for outdoor art. Thanks
@CotySchwabe
@CotySchwabe 4 жыл бұрын
1. I like gloss enamel for it's natural shine and vibrant properties. 2. The ones I use are water based, but others use oil. The oil fumes are way worse. 3. There are artists that use this paint on metal or glass or whatever. The paint is the same kind they use on fire hydrants and metal outdoor handrails, so yes it holds up well.

@CotySchwabe
@CotySchwabe 4 жыл бұрын
Well, if you’re using gloss enamel, it probably won’t come off anything it touches, so be sure to wear clothes that you don’t care about. As for the brushes, I generally have a bucket of water about, and I put the brushes in the bucket as soon as I’m done, so it can soak. Then I wash it out after it has soaked for a while.
@jennandmacie

can you suggest a brand / type for the brushes you used with the enamel paint?: House paint brushes? What are they made of? Also, curious if you gesso the canvas
@CotySchwabe
@CotySchwabe 4 жыл бұрын
Usually the canvas I use is already gessoed. But if it’s not, then I will gesso it. As for a brand of brushes, usually I just use large house painting brushes. But you’ll want to invest in some nice ones, as the cheap ones shed like crazy. I generally get ones with synthetic bristles and plastic handles, and as soon as I’m done painting, I soak it in a bucket of water so it doesn’t dry the brush out.

At 3:40, in my opinion you should have grabbed that, set it aside (if you had canvas available) and started the piece you originally set out tot do. Again, ... in my humble opinion. What you ended up producing is beautiful and compelling, but, again when you hear yourself saying “dope” and again - in my opinion - it’s time to do the hardest thing as an artist - stop! 😂 I have no right to speak, based on my skills (not in painting) and experience, but where you said “dope” that price was beautiful. With that said, lots of artist and art producers out there, but there are few who have an “eye” for color and story and you seem to one who does. Great work.
