Lore-wise both of them fight with the ancient fighting style of Pankration a Greek fighting style where traditionally the fighters would compete without any clothes on but obviously having naked fighters would be a bit of a problem to get away with so they gave them loincloths to compensate. Technical-wise it was an excuse for Capcom to show off their sprite tech with Gill in that his two tone body wouldn't swap sides when he was fighting.
