I've only played a few times but I actually had a very different impression then Tom on this one. While there is plenty of luck due to cards/dice, a big part of the game (at least the way I and my wife were playing it) was sculpting your hand to pull off those devastating combos or power plays and it doesn't sound like he was doing that. In fact I'd say the way it sounds like Tom was playing is a way to see the advantage skill has on the game, as some one who just plays whatever card is in range each turn will nick me up a bit here and there, but ultimately get consistently crushed by my superior hand management probably 9 times out of 10. I also found the terrain much more interesting then I expected it would be. Because so many of the cards force you or your opponent to move around the board in specific ways, and because of the consistent damage knocking opponents into terrain causes, I found it quite fun and powerful to observe the positioning's on the board each turn, and to try to predict which cards to save in my hand based on where I thought my opponent's card would move us during their turn so that I could get optimal collision damage on my turn. A sort of chess like trying to play 1-2 turns ahead. Also, once you delve in a little more you see that characters aren't just their move and life, zangief is considered by many I've talked to the best character in the game despite that 2 movement, because his deck if full of cards that auto-position him directly next to his opponent, effectively negating his 2 movement weakness while still giving him that extra health advantage (among other reasons), which is part of the beauty of the game, that while many characters have clear weakenesses, they always seem to have some aspect of their game that allows you to creatively work around it. Another thing I've noticed from the handful of games I've played is that the variety of characters allows different players to enjoy different characters. Cammy, for instance, most of the cards in her deck combos into each other for people like Tom who love big combos. For people who just like that one really gigantic turn, Juri's ultra, instead of being an attack, makes every card in her deck combo into every other card in her deck so literally all you need is a big hand of your best stuff, land the first one, and now its time to drop that entire hand down. And on and on. So yes, Zangief isn't the most combo heavy character, but if you want combos, there are characters who give you that. I don't think the game is perfect, and I don't mean to disqualify Tom's experience, he's sharing his experience, just wanted to put it out there that my own experience so far has been vastly different, and I'm mostly just playing with my wife for whom I think it would have been fine if this game was the random light game Tom experienced it as but also experience it as a much deeper and strategic game then either of us expected.

I've got to say this comment is exactly how I feel about the game as well. I just played about 12 games per weekend for 2 weeks in a row and I've tried almost every character and I would say the game plays very well and has a lot of variety (assuming you payed $$$ for more characters)

Totally agree. I found it odd that Tom mentions that there aren't many combo cards in the deck as a negative... but then immediately says combos are devastating. Isn't that the point of them being limited? So you can hold back the cards that can link for a huge play... and conversely if you counter that first card that was set up for a huge combo play, it is devastating for your opponent too.

I'm not excusing anything here, but I remember loosely watching Joe's stream when he was unboxing this. The dude was about to cry when he saw the error with that spinning-counter-thingy. I don't own the game, and not interested in this genre at all... But I can respect a passion project, and an error or two from a first timer.

I also backed him for the passion I saw in his project.. . Too bad, 3 years later, the one who cried were the people screwed by the combined mistakes of him and Jasco. Some people had to pay an additional 30% more of what they spent (or they had to give up to everything, without a full refund), some other people paid full price and today still didn't receive the game, a refund, or any kind of response from both Joe and Jasco. I swear I will never support again a Joe's project or a game with the Jasco's logo. Oh, but the game is actually fine (beside the many quality flaws).

This was a fair review. I enjoy the game quite a bit for what it is. It's a lite beer & pretzels game with incredibly high production minis. I don't mind the randomness because it was intentional. IIRC they said they went for about a 60/40 skill to luck ratio, but I can see how some people wouldn't like that much random luck in the game. But I got what I wanted out of it. Fantastic minis and a game that's easy to teach/play and that's surprisingly quick to set up for how much their is.

Love This game. Easy to learn and teach and every game I'm learning new ways to combo or set up attacks, the bluffing mechanic and counter attack is so much fun. Quick turn over in games. Easy set up and pack down.

You are correct. Street Masters, Exceed, and Dice Throne would push this game off of most shelves. The elements mashed together here just don’t feel like Street Fighter. But the minis are stunning for pre-painted products.

I have the game and really enjoy it. It’s not the most complex/strategic game for sure but sculpting your hand to play combos while trying to position your self to maximize your attacks and out think you’re opponent is a lot of fun. I have to disagree that the game doesn’t feel like street fighter. Imo that’s it’s biggest strong suit is that the characters have moves and combos that reflect the video game. It’s def not a cheap game but I’d challenge anyone who likes street fighter to play it and not have a good time. Bottom line It’s a fun game with good choices that feels like you are playing with street fighter characters.

I have this game and it is a lot better than he made it to be. it is 60% luck and the packaging is the worst I've ever seen. I had to create my own tuck boxes and a way to store the minatures. other than that you will be surprised by the game play and the dynamic of it. I recommend it and pretty sure you won't be disappointed

While I agree that there is maybe too much randomness with the combo of dice and cards you can say the same thing about dice throne. For me this feels like street fighter. Each character I’ve played as or against feels like their digital counter part. The dice I feel are to simulate “Dropping a combo” like you would in the game where by you miss the timing or miss your crossup. There’s also the hand management to it that keeps the tension high.

I've been using the mini's for Exceed btw and it's awesome! I actually think I prefer playing Exceed with the miniatures more than the Street Fighter game itself, LOL. Exceed just seems like the perfect game for high quality miniatures to give you that visual representation of the fighters dueling. I hope future iterations of Jasco's UTS games and L99's Exceed will crossover with the same theme so we can get more miniatures for it.

I think the simplistic nature of this game is one of its selling points, The game is so easy to teach, fast t oplay, and exciting that you can get nearly anyone to the table. My favorite game is Ti4 and I didn't care for the street fighter IP but damn is this just a great game. I do hate the terrain pieces so that I agree on but other than that I think this game is worthy of more praise.

As someone who has played this game a dozen times already since getting it a week ago here are my thoughts. I really really enjoy this game and I would 100% disagree with Tom on the amount of randomness and it affecting the gameplay. To me it doesn't, they state in the rulebook they were going for a 60/40 ratio. Most of the time the winner was the person who was able to out wit the other player with bait cards and counterattacks. Typically the person who got a big combo wasn't the person who won. Also if you want more combos play a combo character Zangief was never a combo guy. As for the price point, yeah it's pretty high but it really depends on how much you play a game to say if the game is worth that amount of money. I will get my money's worth for sure as I haven't even played all the characters yet.

So, as a person who played Street Fighter growing up and even played a bit of local competitive play.........there's a reason why certain characters don't have that many combos, or if they do they are very short. That's how they play in the game. Each character (that I've played) has felt like they do in the game. Are you fighting against Zangief? Then you better start wanting to combo, because you can't use defense dice against most of this attacks. Why? He's a command grab character.....you can't block those. Ken, I did a 5 hit combo on my opponent and moved him across the board and into terrain.......but I had to stop myself because I could have ran out of cards for my defense.....which is how Ken plays. Ibuki, a ninja, as a lot of unique counter cards that just get her out of attacks....because that's how she plays. There's a wind guy who can leap off the edge of the board and away from attacks.....again....it's what he does in the fighting game. I have played other games that tried to mimic the fighting game.......and none of the characters felt like the characters themselves. This is the first time I can say I actually felt like I'm playing the game.

I disagree. I’ve played fighting games competitively for years (especially SF, my first love) and I did not feel this game caught the feel of a true fighting video game. Of course we can disagree but having dice in a game where the skill is in the Yomi (mind game) within the neutral and instead of getting the payout for the correct read (by damaging the opponent) you have to roll to check for results? No, I’m sorry RNG like this kills the feel. Now, if I don’t look at it as a board game representation of SF and just a fun game with some elements from SF and the theme. The yeah, looks really fun. But not worth the price tag.

@@Sam-vk8xd I didn't meant to imply that it is a true representation of the competitive side of Street Fighter, but rather the characters themselves feel like the characters. When I played as Bison, I felt like I was playing Bison. The "competitive" side of it comes in the guessing game of Strikes, Projectiles, and Specials. Certain characters are given "Projectiles" (for example Zangeif and Cammy) to help balance things out, but if you know what a character can do you can probably guess what they're going to do. For example, I wouldn't expect Guile to combo as much as Ken. So, if you can correctly guess your opponents move then you can punish your opponent and throw their game off. What Tom didn't go over, from what I remember, is the different mechanics of Mix-Ups, Throws, Charges, Dashes, Pokes, etc. that cards have. But, I'll agree....if you don't like dice games or any game with a random element then this isn't for you.

@@thereal4579 It's pretty good! It's a little similar to this in that each fighter has their own decks of cards and you play them out face down and flip over to see what happens. There's a wider variety of fighters in Battlecon, though, and the game mechanics for the different fighters are also very different from each other. There's also less randomness - you have your cards in your hand and can pick what move you're doing each turn and there are no dice determining the outcomes. Basically if you like this Street Fighter game you'd probably also like BattleCon.

@@robertbouley7697 exactly. Imagine really getting into the Yomi (mind game) in this game, you’ve made the right choice reading your opponent’s next move. You played the right card, you roll the dice... and miss. Where’s the payout for the correct read? In a fighting game you are rewarded for this with the damage you inflict, with this game you leave it to luck. Actually this situation I mention is what happened in the demo gameplay during the KS. Alex played the right card against Angry Joe because he read the neutral right, and then he rolls the dice... and gets no hits.

Fair review, but I'd say it was fairly clear during the Kickstarter that this was going to be a light beer & pretzels sort of game with overproduced miniatures and lots of random luck. It's for collector fans of the genre/IP who spend money on such things. I feel fine with purchasing it, even as a casual fan of the IP. Though I plan on keeping it, the resell value will be good even just for the miniatures. Think about it: $280 was the all-in pledge which includes 37 of those lovely huge pre-painted miniatures. I would wager a backer could sell just the miniatures and make their money back, even years after the fact.

And I really enjoy it. Still haven't been able to test anything more then 1v1, sure it'll make the game even crazier and fun.

This is more like a video gamer's deluxe item. Something to treat yourself when you are a fan. Where having it at all is one of the main ideas. I know a few people that bought games like this and they have maybe.... two or three big KS board games of this sort and that's that. Gigantic, deluxe, heavy-ameritrash titles with a known license that they enjoy playing and make a special night out of it. I think there's a niche there for stuff like this. I'd rather play Summoner Wars but this is fine too :).

This is great way to explain it. For someone who is more into video games, this will be a good (albeit pricey) transition item to board games or as you said, a collectors piece. Sure, there are some valid criticisms, but they only really apply to more seasoned board gamers. Some people will be satisfied with playing a game with a big honking Ryu and not someone who looks like him. I see a lot of this in the Monster Hunter Kickstarter, where the fans of the video game are excited but those same seasoned gamers jump on weaknesses of the game due to design choices to line it up with the IP. A lot people are comparing it to Primal, but for someone who isnt so into board games, they wont care simply because Primal ISN'T MH.

For sure I have concerns about a few things including the hp trackers, the bonus car tiles and some other little things but overall, considering the brilliant and innovative work on the minis, it was a worthy purchase. I think CMON already copied them and added some transparent plastic to some of their XMEN minis and I predict we will see a lot more of those going forward so you gotta hand it to them for creating something that will "revolutionize" minis going forward.

It almost seems like board game designers are looking at a "worst practices" book stolen from the video game industry. Greed seems to be the common denominator. While mistakes happen, I don't believe that the seasoned designers involved were so short-sighted, incompetent and uncreative that they weren't able to adapt existing sets.* It was an intentional / conscious decision. A choice. Funny that this example concerns Star Wars... known for the dark side and evil empire. * Reference: All the amazing existing creative solutions/hacks fans have come up with for... everything - video games, board games, etc. - That often push a design well beyond it's existing scope and what anyone thought was possible.

I got the second version of X-Wing for my birthday and then I went out and bought a whole bunch of expansions to play with new ships and was surprised how cheap they were. @@RobVespa I would be shocked if Angry Joe would do something like this. He's made his KZbin career out of being pro consumer and it would completely destroy his credibility. After playing through the game several times now, I don't really think the game needs much work in the overall design. There are definitely some tweaks and clarifications that need to happen and they have and official FAQ/Errata which has captured most of it. But I think the game is pretty great as is. It fits nicely along side other fighting board games like Yomi, Exceed and Battlecon.

I think I might know why they called it "the miniatures game." It took a while to ship, it also took some time before that in development, so you have to backdate a few years at this point. Joe comes to the board game hobby more from video games and RPGs (I'm the same so I feel like that's why I got the reference pretty quick). Back especially some years back there was a typical trend of calling an IP (Whatever) the Miniatures Game or the like to distinguish it from something else like a video game or tabletop RPG. Think things like D&D The Miniatures Game. X-Wing the Miniatures Game. Etc. So if I were to bet, that was probably the logic behind naming it like that; to kind of ensure people understood that hey this says Street Fighter on it but it's a board style game.

so for the case with X-Wing, it's a licensing thing. Hasbro has the Star Wars license rights to board games... FFG (now Asmodee) have the rights to make miniatures game. So that's why all of their games (X-wing, Imperial Assault, Rebellion, Outer Rim, Armada and Legion) all have miniatures in them, so they can be classified as miniatures games, even though games like Rebellion and Outer rim could use tokens like any other board game and function perfectly., I suspect it's the same thing here too. Licensing is a mess with these things.

There is nothing that can be done for the gameplay. All the games will be compatible and therefore will have to follow the same rules. The only possibility I can see is them maybe ham-fisting some new mode in there, but it would probably be unbalanced for the street fighter characters since it wouldn't be designed with their decks in mind.

You've got it backwards: this is a set of collectible miniatures with a game attached, not a game with some figures attached. They went DEEP on the roster during the kickstarter, including many characters that you just don't see merch of. This game has EASILY the best Dan Hibiki figure I can get my hands on.

It's why i waited until the last minute to back at the 140$ lvl, i was really afraid that the fighting mechanic would be bad. After looking at a lot of game play, i thought there was hope there, and I'm so glad ti took the dive. The fighting experience is amazing, at least, for certain decks. There are obviously completely trash characters and some that are obviously top tier. Just one is completely imbalanced all of what, 34 characters ? that's pretty impressive. And they will have learned so much from this for the next KS, and the fact that it mix and matches into the same fighting system is just amazing to me. I think you missed out.

I don’t think of this so much as a fighting game like BattleCon or Yomi. Compared to them the gameplay suffers. This really is more like Star Wars Epic Duels in gameplay with a fighting game skin. Restoration Games did a better job of adapting that game when they made Unmatched, but this game isn’t bad.

I actually liked the gameplay of this better then Yomi, and I do like Yomi quite a bit too, but the fact that every single thing you do in Yomi is a rock paper scissors guessing game is kind of stressful to me, I like that here if I don't want to guess what they have I can just block, or I can do other things like move around and draw extra cards to give me breathers between the rock paper scissors guessing. What Yomi has over it is much easier set up and clean up, this is definitely a game I think I'd play a lot more if we didn't have to set up a board an terrain in addition to shuffling decks every single time we play. I don't agree with most of Tom's comments but one I do agree with is that the whole thing feels a little needlessly complicated, like it really could have benefited from another pass trying to simplify things a bit more. Why do I have to care if a piece of terrain is classified as "large" or "small" when determining if I can hadouken past it, or pull out a ruler and make sure I have true line of site. Too many weird edge case rules caused by decisions that don't add enough to the game (in my opinion) to justify the extra complexity they require.

This is a cracking fighting game, very tactical and I love the cardplay, but I also had trouble with the gauges and terrain, its why I use the 2D board because I never have to use the terrible terrain pieces.

Think it's called "Miniatures Game" to differ it from the video game and in case of possible future other versions (better than just calling it "Street Fighter" to possibly cause confusion). Game is fun, not the best gameplay out there for a board game (at least, to my cup o' tea), but it's fine and I think does a good job replicating the fighting game in a board game setting., it's good times and the miniatures are definitely pretty. ya, the gauge was a mess up of production and Angry Joe was pretty upset with that.

Miniatures Games are a different type of games, also called tabletop games. They don't come with game boards, but you build terrain for them. So the title is as misleading as calling it "Street Fighter: The Card Game". There are sure also plenty of cards in the game, a card game would still be something different. But based on Tom's review, the most fitting title might have as well been: "Street Fighter: The Miniatures"?

One of his mental hurdles is he thinks this is a miniatures game, which it isn’t. It is a card driven tactical skirmish game, that has awesome minis. Everything is meant to be compatible, so I highly doubt there will be any updates to this game until if/when they did a whole reboot and it's much too soon for that. I haven't played my copy yet, but I trust Tom when he says there is too much randomness in it. That's unfortunate, but it might a simple game to pull out once a while.

@@paulb2474 I suppose its possible to do some slight tweeks, but I don't think slight tweeks would change anything significantly. To do that, you would have to change the character decks. Having played my first game yesterday, I have to say I mostly disagree with Tom with my general feeling toward the game. He's not wrong about the randomness (it basically caused me to lose my first game) but I don't mind it. So I really don't think it needs to be improved for the most part. The only thing I might change is making combos easier to pull off.

Jasco claim it is extra stock that was canceled, but they do not list the stock as limited and they do not even have a clue to the numbers of canceled yet as there is still all of EU that remains undelivered. So what happens to the hundreds that preorder off the site if all the stock is used to replace broken games and missing orders. It just feels like Jasco had a large number made for selling on site, and using canceled orders as the cover.
