Definitely a great showing by both versions, particularly PS1 finding a way to overcome its 2D discrepancies. But with the 1MB/4MB added RAM, the king of 32-bit 2D will always be Saturn.

It’s amazing how the intros featuring character rivalry and lore directly complement each other. The Saturn shows an image of Dan while the PSX shows Sagat, Cody appears in the Saturn at the same time that Guy’s image is shown on the PSX, Juni on Saturn while Cammy on PSX, etc. I might be looking too much into this, and it might be coincidental, but if intentionally planned, that is a great amount of detail from the teams involved with handling each of these ports. Great vid as always VG ✊🔥💯
@SegaFanatic5188
@SegaFanatic5188 7 ай бұрын
There's different variations of the intro that will play. Let the game just run and it will cycle through different ones each time. The same intro on the PS1 version happens on Saturn as well if you let the attract mode play. The only difference is the silhouettes on Saturn you can see through to another background layer while on PS1 they're a solid color. This comparison didn't compare synchronized captures from boot up is my guess.

Saturn version wins here, although you have a great version on the PSX/PS1 as well. The Saturn version in general loads quicker, has an in depth character cut screen, some backgrounds have more detail (Dhalsim's stage has more string ribbons in the background)... just the advantage of having more ram. About the wider aspect of the Saturn version, back then the TVs we played these consoles on typically allowed you stretch the image vertically or horizontally, I wouldn't judge either version too harshly here. I thought VCD was going to unleash a level 3 super on Bison/Vega on the Saturn playthrough...😁😁

OK, remember back then when the first early models of the PS1 all had like a parallel I/O port on the back of them? Those back ports allowed the use of some unofficial 3rd-party add-on devices; such as Game Shark and Pro Action Replay. While they were primarily used as cheat devices, many of them also facilitated the use of pirated backup copies of games. Obviously $ONY was well-aware (and NOT pleased) of the whole pirating scene, and ultimately the parallel I/O port was removed from newer models of the PS1. In my opinion, if $ONY had actually allowed and licensed it, those add-on cheat devices also could've doubled/tripled/quadrupled their purpose as a cheat device, import game enabler, extra memory blocks for game saves, and possibly even a 4Mb RAM expansion cart similar to the popular 4-in-1 cart that's been widely available for Saturn. I would've been happily willing to pay at least $60 for an ALL-IN-ONE device like that. While Capcom has done a commendable job, of making only the very necessary cuts and keeping the loadtimes down to as short as possible on the PS1 version of SFA3; I think we would all agree that an additional 4Mb of RAM (what the PS1 really desperately needs) really could've done WONDERS for SFA3 and MANY other Capcom or SNK fighting games! Talk about some MISSED OPPORTUNITIES here, motherfuckers!

Alpha 2 is the better game to me despite having less characters in the roster. In Alpha 3 Capcom separate the Custom Combo from the Super Combo and turn those into separate ism whereas in Alpha 2 you could do one or the other at anytime as long as you had a level charge. Also Alpha 2 you could throw opponent normally whereas in Alpha 3 you are required to simultaneously press two buttons to do so. Alpha 3 also change how you perform Alpha Counter, instead of a smooth motion, you just tap instead which feels awkward. The Custom Combo system in Alpha 3 is also tweak terribly, instead of pushing your character to connect hits once the shadow charge begins, in Alpha 3 the Custom Combo doesn't charge you forward but once activated you are to connect hits manually instead which makes it feel awkward and wasted.

You failed to realize that not every fighting games required 6 buttons. Tekken only use 4 buttons, Virtua Fighter only use 3, DOA only use 3, Mortal Kombat only used 5 (in some occasion it use 6 but 4 of those were attack buttons), basically all of SNK fighting games used only 4 since they are based on the NeoGeo games and NeoGeo controllers and cabinets only had 4 buttons. As for Capcom, Street Fighter use 6, Darkstalkers use 6, Marvel vs. Capcom use 6 at first but reduced to just 4 later on, Super Smash Bros. only use 4, BlazBlue and Guilty Gear only use 4 and 5, Power Rangers only use 2 on Genesis and 4 on Super NES. When you think about it less fighting games use 6 buttons therefore the PS1 diamond layout is perfectly fine for fighting games. In Tekken each of the 4 buttons were assign to each four limbs of every fighter, that makes it more unique than Capcom's 3 strength rule of punches and kicks.

I think the only thing the PS1 version has over Saturn was that the sound effects sound much less compressed, plus the Saturn version is super rare and Japan only. Otherwise, Saturn is nearly arcade perfect, while the PS1 had to cut a few corners, but it still turned out alright. Jury's out on how the Dreamcast version compares, though the DC controller is absolute dogwater for six button fighters such as this.

IIRC, the DC version has some issues that put it behind the Saturn version; The sprites are weirdly stretched for some reason and there's actually a bit of input lag intentionally baked into the DC version out of consideration for the online play in the Japanese release. Not bad or unplayable by any means, just disappointing compared to MvC1's mostly stellar port. (Said input lag was for whatever reason carried over into the NAOMI release of Alpha 3 Upper, which uses the DC port as a base; It's one of many reasons why only the original vanilla Arcade release of Alpha 3 is played competitively.)

@@TheSeventhForce I believed it was the NAOMI version that had input lags which carry over to the Dreamcast version. Even though the NAOMI version didn't get released commercially until 2001, Capcom did developed it first in 1998 as a beta build before porting it to Dreamcast in 1999. Reason for the input lags were because of the NAOMI version requirement of CHD media in their cabinet. Using CHD media, it give the game much better audios and more voice samples but doing so also cause the game to hiccups at time which cause those small input lags. These then became native in the Dreamcast port. Luckily these were eliminated in the GBA and PSP versions.

It was available world-wide, meaning you didn't have to deal with cost prohibitive import fees. The Playstion's low res modes: -Progressive 256x224, 320x224 -Interlaced 256x448 , 320x448 The Playstation could also support vertical resolutions of 240p/480i, so the resolutions of 320x240p 320x480i are also available High res modes for both basically doubled the horizontal res above. The wider resolution modes were typically called overscan modes as eliminated black border bars. These ports would have likely kept the same vertical resolution as the CPS2, meaning 224. The Playstation's nearest low res horizontal resolution is 320, which is likely the resolution used. The Saturn's nearest low H resolution is 352. If they used 352x224, this should account for the Saturn's wider sprites/presentation. Back then it didn't really matter because the TVs could stretch the image vertically and horizontally.

Idk about 10x better... but there are a couple things. Watching the video, the biggest difference seems to be the playstation loading times. The second thing is more technical, and I'm not entirely sure how much it effects the games, but the architecture of the consoles is different. The Saturn was a 32-bit console that mostly focused on 2D. It could do some 3D, but it was optimized for 2D graphics, which is why the system is so good for 2D arcade ports, especially fighting games. PS1 on the other hand is geared towards 3D graphics, and has to use trickery to be able to do 2D graphics. Neither console is better, they are just geared toward different things.
