As Indonesian, i dont even bother about it. But honestly, no matter what melayu and javanese influences are very strong in Indonesia especially for the food. Uduk in Indonesian means mixed. Nasi uduk has strong fragrance coconut milk depends on where you eat and who cook it. Nasi uduk main ingredients is coconut milk same as nasi lemak. For sambal in Indonesia use red chilis NOT green. The flavor defers from sweet and salty depends on the cook. Sometimes using terasi. Green chilis use for some minang food mostly for making a certain type of sambal. Never in nasi uduk. nasi uduk the basic condiments fried peanuts, anchovies, egg, shredded chicken, sambal MERAH (RED). Nasi lemak commonly sweet (not spicy) type of sambal (I've tried it) Most Indonesian years ago for savoury food using coconut milk, alot of rempah, and sambal(chilis), even the dessert using coconut milk. Suku (ethnic) Melayu in Indonesia are sumatra and kalimantan people. Banana leaves all indonesia's food using it. The conclusion is nasi uduk still from Indonesia. Nasi lemak from malaysia or Singapore? Just enjoy the food. Cendol is Indonesia's for sure. As indonesian we use suji leaves and pandan leaves. Not only daun pandan for the a hint of bitter flavor, colour, aroma also strong sweet gula jawa, coconut milk. Its the main point for the real kind of cendol. Traditional one use ice cubes not es serut or shaved ice.
@MYNAMEISLIGHTSАй бұрын
Yes, i’m shocked when he tell nasi uduk use green chilli, and there’s 2 types of nasi uduk, first for breakfast with some egg, stir rice noodle, mixed tempe with peanut, and mixed potato with liver, and with sambal that kinda sweet. And the other one nasi uduk that usually open in evening use fried fish or chicken, tempeh, tahu, and veggies for lalapan, and also sambal that use tomato so it’s kinda watery and have natural sweet.
@jasminepeterson5766Ай бұрын
That food historian was very diplomatic, so cunning that he was downright irritating. Never in my life nasi uduk use green sambal. Sure you can compare between the toppings, but you realize he never mentioned the difference in the spices used in the nasi. Sure we all use santan and rice as the main ingredients but if both dishes also use the same other ingredients like pandan leaves and lemon grass, that means it originated from one source or one influenced the other. For example, Bangka and Belitung have special soup dish called Lempah which looks similar with Tom Yam (sour and spicy) but both use different spice in the broth. Hence they are legit come from two different countries and backgrounds

From my understanding, I think nasi lemak is inspired from Nasi Uduk, but it has its own uniqueness cuz availability of the side dishes and probably the area's taste buds. Madura & Java is popular with its Chicken & Duck dishes, (it has a lot of chicken & duck farms), Sambal ijo is also a popular sambal in Java and Madura (aside from Nasi uduk). Since Melaka was a trade hub (and located in the coast), I think why it has different side dishes is because there's simply not a lot of ingredients therefore uses the local ingredients.

Trivia: nasi uduk or uduk rice was created by sultan agung mataram because he can't tolerate the nasi mandi/ mandi rice spices. instead of mandi (taking a bath) rice he created wudhu (ablution) rice which is lighter version and traditionally nasi wuduk accompanied by ayam ingkung / prostrate chicken to remind you that after ablution there must be a prayers. That is the javanese source but in sundanese uduk just means campur or mixed, so nasi uduk just means nasi campur. Finally: NO! nasi lemak is one of a kind and nasi uduk is the other kind. it is different. Nasi lemak is clearly malays which is not only malaysian malays but also indonesian malays. In Indonesia Malays is just one of the ethnic group like javanese and sundanese. I can't find nasi lemak equivalent in java even though the raw material can be found here but we as javanese never make coconut rice accompanied with crispy salted fish. the most closely dish of nasi lemak is nasi kuning if you take all of the side dish but nasi kuning using tumeric to create golden rice.
@LasTeicneo_troyАй бұрын

Depends on the region, and the food stalls, IMO. The authentic and traditional Nasi Uduk, same with Nasi Kuning is quite heavy in itself. But nowadays many sellers are willing to sacrifice taste just to cut cost and maximize profit. The result is meh tasting nasi uduk and nasi kuning, esp in opportunistic metro city like Jakarta. If you call yourself a foodie and judge Indonesian foods based on what is sold in Jakarta, you are missing out big time. Foods in Jakarta is milder compared to the OG ones, we Indonesians call them "ga berani bumbu" or literally translated to "don't dare enough in seasoning".
@MYNAMEISLIGHTSАй бұрын
The authentic nasi uduk use more coconut than nasi lemak, they have to make it less santan due to economic reasons, and actually there’s 2 types of nasi uduk one that use orak arik tempe, telur, red kinda sweet chilli, etc just like nasi lemak, usually eaten for breakfast. And another one that comes with fried tempe tahu, fried fish or chicken, sambal that use tomato so it’s naturally sweet and watery, so it’s more mild and enjoyable but ofc it’s spicy, usually eaten or open in evening to midnight.

AI answer : Cendol comes from the Southeast Asian region, especially Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In Indonesia, cendol has been a famous traditional drink since ancient times, especially in Java. The name "cendol" refers to green grains made from rice flour or hunkwe flour cooked with pandan water so that it produces a distinctive green color and aroma.
@JojoLannister27 күн бұрын
Cendol is definitely Javanese! I grew up in East Java making cendol in the ’80s. Plenty of Javanese words that rhyme with cendol, like gondol, dodol, mbrodol, jebol, etc.

Nasi lemak is a traditional Malay dish enjoyed wherever Malay communities reside. While Malaysia is known for popularizing nasi lemak, it cannot exclusively claim it as originating from Malaysia, as the Malay people are not confined to one country. In fact, the earliest Malay kingdom, Srivijaya, was based in Sumatra.

As a Singaporean, I find it hilarious that countries so close together think we can split the food influences so clearly. There are plenty of variations of each of these 'authentic dishes'. Not sure why everyone is so offended. Btw, the Thai version of cendol is called "Lot Chong Singapore". We should celebrate the similarities and appreciate the variations!

Everything is sparkly and beautiful until one claims and exploits it for her own benefit, like attracting tourists, self branding, etc. Traditional food is a product, a riches, with no trade mark. Everything relies on wisdom and understanding of each and every related parties. Say Kimchi is originated from China, and see Koreans lose their minds. Say pizza is American, and see Italians go mad over it. This kind of quarrel is not endemic to SEA.

Indonesia also has nasi lemak. Its in sumatra area like palembang, riau, jambi, since they was malays kingdom. The original nasi uduk has strong coconut flavour and fat. Actually the different is nasi uduk use lemongrass and bayleaf. And original nasi uduk use peanut sambal, while nasi lemak use sambal belacan. Side dish in nasi uduk less spice than nasi lemak that have collaboration with indian spices. Nasi uduk also use cucumber and kemangi to balance the spice of sambal and give freshness on the food. Actually there is another cousin of them. Its nasi ulam.

The word "uduk" comes from the word "wudhu" or cleansing the body before prayer. It was discovered by Sultan Agung of Islamic Mataram, in Central Java. The side dish is chicken which is called "ingkung", from the Javanese word "nyekungkung" which means prayer. So, philosophically, nasi uduk reminds us of prayer

I'm surprised that nasi lemak is considered to be more fragant. Perhaps that's because you buy it in Malaysia. As Indonesian Javanese living in Malaysia, I grew up eating nasi uduk for breakfast and clearly, it has deeper coconut flavour. I guess it depends where you eat 'em. And I never think that the 2 are the same, inspired maybe but not the same. The main distinctive characteristics are the sambal and the depth of coconut flavour. But then again, we should remember that before the modern times where the regions divided into many countries, there were kingdoms whereby some of the big ones span widely across the peninsula. Additionally, we do trading with all sorts of races including Gujarat, Arabs, Chinese, etc. Hence, definitely, we'll influence each other. And the traders may bring the recipes back to their home kingdom or perhaps innovate to suit their palate/adapt to the local ingredients. Surely, interesting discourse, isn't it?

Well Singapore forgot that it used to part of Malaysia....and Malaysia also Forgot that it used to part of Nusantara (Indonesia) before British Colonisation so if sharing some similarities is not a surprising things coz everything comes from the same root which is Nusantara (Indonesia) since Indonesia culinary art is way older for centuries... Cendol is the food name and the leaf name called daun suji/suji leaf for the green color and mixed it with pandan leaf for the fragrance ... And I don't believe nasi uduk in Malaysia to make a comparison coz this food historian information is not really accurate.... Rice cook with coconut milk have so many different names even in Indonesia Nasi Lemak in Riau or Padang, Nasi gemuk in some other part of Sumatra, nasi uduk in java and so on ...even Nasi Liwet an authentic traditional dish from solo cental java is also infused using coconut milk however Nasi liwet is heavier in taste and comes with different condiments. And No nasi uduk not a must have Tempe it can be anything else like what Mrs.Saleha have because Nasi Uduk is the name of the rice itself. I'm not telling it's not right but trust me mostly nasi uduk in Indonesia do not used that green chili sambal like in nasi Padang it's just regular red chili with shrimp paste sambal. So I doubt that the food historian knows about it coz I think he only know "Nasi Uduk" in Malaysia

Do Singaporeans and Malaysians know how to make Nasi Uduk? Singapore and Malaysia may fight to win over "Nasi Lemak" but Indonesia doesnt need to bother they because Indonesia has "Nasi Uduk" which is clearly different and more authentic in terms of taste and historical value than nasi lemak. Nasi Uduk has a very distinctive taste that is better than Nasi Lemak. If Nasi Lemak is only given coconut milk and pandan leaves, but Nasi Uduk needs to be added with other herbal spices such as lemongrass, ginger, bay leaves and galangal, or even Nasi Uduk has other varieties such as "Nasi Uduk Kuning" which is added with coloring from turmeric.
@muhammadzanurahmadhani886213 күн бұрын
Don't forget, Indonesia also has "Nasi Tumpeng" which has the same ingredients as Nasi Uduk Kuning but is very different in terms of meaning, sequence and appearance from ordinary Nasi Uduk Kuning. Nasi Tumpeng / Tumpengan is not an ordinary type of food that is available every day. Tumpeng is only made when there is a big event such as "Kenduri / Slametan / Tasyakuran" and every Indonesian Independence Day. The history of Tumpeng can be traced back to the Hindu-Buddhist era in Indonesia as a form of gratitude to the Hindu Gods by making rice in the shape of a mountain like "Mahameru/Meru" where the Hindu gods live.

My country is also famous for chocolate, but people forget cocoa beans grow in South America & Africa… The only thing I won’t accept is people calling it “French Fries” because they aren’t! They are a Belgian creation but in our country 3 languages are primarily spoken: Flemish/Dutch, French & German… couriers passed through the French speaking part of the country so that’s probably where the name comes from in American English, but I really can’t stand it, I’d rather have people use the British term ‘Chips’ 😅❤
