the beginning of the problem was because Singapore and Malaysia incorporated Javanese into what they called Malay, even though Malays and Javanese had never been one name. Malays are Malays, and Javanese are Javanese. Incorporating Javanese into Malay is a political decision by Malaysia to make the Malay community a majority compared to Chinese and Indians in the country. You can see Javanese people everywhere will still be Javanese, in Suriname, New Caledonia, the Netherlands and others, they are not called Malay, and they don't even know what Malay is. because of Malaysia's racial concept, there are many disputes, Malaysians feel that all ethnicities in Indonesia are the same as them, and ethnicities in Indonesia, on the other hand, do not feel the same. because they actually differ in culture, language, culinary and even religion. Malaysia's racial concept has destroyed ethnic harmony in Southeast Asia. not only degrading Chinese and Indians under Malay supremacy, but also considering there are no other ethnicities, there are only Malays. Even though the Malays are an ethnic minority with around 40 million worldwide, it is too few to be what they claim to be a Malay race. There is no concept of the Malay race outside of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. because Southeast Asia is an Austronesian society as a sub-Mongoloid RACE
@Ix-.-xI Жыл бұрын
the "40 million" itself is so vague and I would say delusional, since the Malaysian authority counted every Indonesian-origin ethnics (such as Minangkabau, Javanese, Banjar, Palembang, etc) as "Malaysian Malays". For those who didn't know, the people lived in Johore, Selangore and Perak are Javanese in origin, the people in Negeri Sembilan are Minangkabau, the people in Malacca are mixed of Palembang and Javanese, not to mention that the people in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis are of Thai and Palembang descent. And in the Malaysian-occupied state of Sarawak they counted the Iban as "Malay" as well, the "Malay population" outside of Indonesia is so dubious, only Indonesia who had the real number of Malay population because they really count the real Malays not politically fake one.

When I was 9-month-old baby, in 1990 my parents opened Central Javanese Restaurant in West Jakarta. Weirdly enough they named the restaurant Pondol-Pondok Es Cendol despite the fact that we serve varieties of Central Javanese Cuisines. Almost 33 years later, we are still standing serving premium Cendol (you can choose varieties of toppings in our rest.; durian, kopyor/macapuno, young coconut, jackfruit, tape ketan/fermented glutinous rice, even ice cream for more modern twist) and other traditional Central Javanese desserts. My brother and I are beyond grateful for this humble dessert. Ocean of Cendol literally paid our tuition fee in Europe & US. I came back from Finland after graduating as a food scientist to help my dad running the business since 2015, after my mom passed away. Feel free to come by and try our version of Cendol. Since both of my parents are from Central Java, our cendol is considered Dawet, slightly different from the Cendol from Bandung. For more firm chewy texture, we use mainly mungbean flour instead of rice flour. Thank you CNA Insider for making this. Truly interesting & elaborate research about Cendol.

@heldahelda131410 ай бұрын
It's important to know who owns it originally. Starting from the naming, where it came from, how the idea or the origin recipe was made first, and the origin ingredients...the fact that it evolves n is used n modified in different countries, it's another story to tell. Which is okay. but to CLAIM it as theirs, that's NOT okay...They can claim their versions of Cendol, but they cant claim they own it first, especially the difference is only by adding one topping on it like red beans, doesnt change its origin taste and ingredients. When they claimed nasi lemak, am okay with it. Eventho it tastes like nasi uduk, Indonesian's version, but nasi lemak has its own version. So they can claim it as theirs. I dont mind. But for cendol, rojak (malay's claim), and the palm sugar (gula JAWA) as theirs, not a chance. They've been claiming many of Indonesia's heritages as theirs like children claiming their toys. That's not cool at all... Like Nasi goreng, i believe it's originally from China. They invented it first. They own it first. But we modified it to be our own version, which is different from its origin, from the condiment, topping, spices, especially the crackers added to it, all different. That's why we get the recognition for nasgor as ours. Also rendang, it's originally from India, curry food. But we modified it with our own condiment, spices, and moreover, we add new ingredient in it, coconut milk and sambal. That's what makes it different from its origin, that's why we can call it ours. i know living peacefully with our neighbours is very important, but being okay with everything they claim as theirs while it's ours, we need to set boundaries. *peace*

As much as I do think that Indonesia and Malaysia are two siblings that got separated because of European influence, it still repulses me that Malays are claiming many of which originated from Java and other parts of Indonesia to have been derived from their sole origin. And I get the “Well we adopted some of yours and made a better variation out of it” stuff some people say as a justification but I think it’s still very essential that countries acknowledge the cultures they adopted it from instead of claiming it as their heritage. Italian people are chill when the world refers pizza to be one of American cuisine but you don’t see American people claiming pizza as their authentic food because then Italian people will start to get provoked, same case, honestly.

Original Name Cendol Is Dawet From Java Indonesia, I remember when I was little, I helped my grandmother sell dawet in 1975
@IndoCropCirclesOfficial Жыл бұрын
*THE FACT: Cendol originally comes from Java. In the past its name was "Dawet". Cendol is a name throughout Indonesia, in Java they still know Cendol as "Dawet" and it has been around since the kingdom era in Java, and backthen it's made without ice, even the sugar used is known for all Indonesian as "Javanese sugar" (gula Jawa), in English its called brown sugar. Even at traditional Javanese weddings until now, the bride's parents symbolically become Dawet (Cendol) sellers and distribute clay coins to all guests as a means of payment, which later all the coins are collected and considered a fortune for the bride and groom. Just like Laksa, it doesn't originate from Singapore, but from Bogor in West Java, which also existed hundreds of years ago, not from Singapore. Many Javanese immigrate to Singapore and Malaysia, they make culinary from where they come from and become popular there. And the recipe was passed down to the next generation until "it seemed" to have come from local Singapore or Malaysia's culinary , even though migrants from Java brought them there* _You won't believe what you don't know...._ -IndoCropCircles, telling you the truth.

CENDOL stands for DIPENCET NGAJENDOL (how to make traditional cendol) from Sundanese 😃 Brown sugar or Javanese sugar but in Sundanese we call it kawung sugar. The taste, shape and aroma of kawung sugar is very fragrant and has a distinctive sweet taste and differs slightly from dark chocolate 😉 The taste of ice cendol from Indonesia is much better When I saw the Malacca version of brown sugar, it was so pale, it was different from the original Sundanese SUGAR KAWUNG in the Sukabumi area, the color was so beautiful and the aroma was so good Es cendol has a friend named ice cingcau 😅 Ice grass jelly in my opinion is better because the taste of grass jelly is so extraordinary that it can crack in the mouth, soft, like dancing in the mouth😅 A little extra if you make cendol using natural dyes from pandan leaves, the results will be much better and more natural In addition, cendol from Indonesia usually uses pieces of jackfruit of a certain type to make the brown sugar liquid more aromatic Cendol-cenol= sunda Cendol-dawet= jawa

@@joMan1060 the easiest way of recognising where cendol came from, it is a SE Asian thing, and as Asians ourselves we just used what was given to us and make it happen. Throughout history, we never asked ourselves "where did this 'green eyeless worms' come from". Every Asian culture has tried everything to sustain their kingdoms; while Europeans during Renaissance start questioning origins of everything, us Asians and our Equatorial kins around the globe find that "whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger" when it comes to preparing our meals with anything we could find in the forest. We were like Americans before the US was born in the field of foodstuff. So that's how cendol originated, it didn't sprung up from anywhere like Pretzels in... OK I will leave the guessing away, but it could either be European or Mediterranean whenever wheat flour came into the historical picture. So that's the mystery of food, food shouldn't always need to have an origin, it has always been here thru out history to give us the nutrients needed to remind us that "I'm edible. No need to break your heads over me!!! " . Thanks!

ChatGPT said: "The origin of the name "cendol" is believed to come from the Javanese language, specifically from the word "jendol" or "dodol," which means "bulging" or "swollen." This refers to the characteristic shape and texture of the rice flour jelly noodles used in cendol, which are cylindrical and have a slightly chewy consistency. Over time, the word "jendol" or "dodol" transformed into "cendol," which is the more commonly used term today. It's worth noting that variations of cendol exist in different Southeast Asian countries, each with their own local names and slight differences in ingredients and preparation methods." So, it's originally from Indonesia.

@@Joespore Dodol is of course different from cendol. But "bulging" or "swollen" connotes to cendol or jendol as cendol looks bulging or swollen. Dodol is known in the 9th century in Jawa as "dwadwal" (old Javanese word) and its sound of dwal or dol is similar to dol in cendol. So, it could have similar root in that bulging/swollen look.

Records of the word cendol or tjendol can be traced to many 19th-century dictionaries and books in the Dutch East Indies. One of the oldest known records of the word tjendol is contained in the Oost-Indisch kookboek or East Indies recipe book dating from 1866. This book includes a cendol recipe with the title "Tjendol of Dawet" indicating that cendol and dawet were used synonymously at that time.[5] ] In the dictionary Supplement op het Maleisch-Nederduitsch Woordenboek (1869) by Jan Pijnappel (Gz.), tjendol is described as a kind of drink or dilute paste made from sago, coconut milk, sugar and salt.

The name cendol probably comes from the Javanese word jendol meaning "swollen" or "chewy", which refers to the texture of the green grains in the drink. Cendol was first mentioned in the Taji inscription in Ponorogo in the 10th century under the name Dawet. Later, the Kresnayana manuscript from the 12th century during the Kediri Kingdom rewrote the name. In the 15th century, cendol spread to Central Java and West Java as a medium for preaching during the Demak sultanate. Javanese soldiers then brought cendol to Melaka, Malaysia and Singapore under the name Cendol. Cendol is purely from Java, Indonesia
