Traded the Mini Cooper for this badass Sand Rail! Drove it home about 20 miles in 20 degree weather. Just looking for someone to help me identify a few things on it.

Ha! I love this tail! I wanted to buy it so bad but you got it first! I have all the listing pics in my phone. It’s fun to see it on KZbin.

I sold it a couple months ago! Fun while I had it. Had to move on though.

The "turning" brakes are sometimes called a "cutting brake." It does look like a 1600 with a dual port carb and in front of the oil cooler is the stock fan housing/oil cooler.

Stock doghouse oil cooler on doghouse fan shroud. Plus an external cooler off of the full flow. All good stuff.

Turning brakes are pure gold! Get skinny tires for the front, those are working against what makes it work best. It appears to be built well by someone who did their homework. (Other than the front tires).

Yeah I’m sure I’ll have to address the fronts at some point t.

Looks like it's a warrior. Berrin buggy. Swing axle. Make sure you keep those boots inspected for cracks and leaks. That's also a dual port type 1.

The frame looks like a Berrien short back frame that was sold throughout the 70's and 80's, with a bolt on rear cage

Thank you for that!! All the knowledge I can get is helpful because I’m sure I’ll be breaking it soon enough!

The first thing i would do is get rid of those front tires. If you have been off road with it you probably have noticed that its hard to keep going straight and hard to turn. Those big tires are the reason. The next thing you might want to do is pick up a book called, How to keep my VW alive. This book will teach you all about the engine and how to maintain it. Otherwise, depending on what you paid for it, it looks like you have a pretty good machine. But like I said, get some skinny tires up front, it will drive much better both on and off road. So, have fun, thats what they are for.

Sweet buggy, you might want to take those giant tires off the front and switch to some tall skinny lightweight 6.50x15 style. The spindles are not very strong especially the driver side because it’s hollow. You can do a lower arm ball joint reversal for more height up front on the cheap, trans axle looks like it had billet side plates and swing axles are notoriously strong anyway. Don’t bang reverse or you WILL break the brass gear! I didn’t see much but the head casting looked very smooth near the exhaust flang check the heads out for aftermarket. Also the chrome lights out in front of the black lights has got to be blinding at night

Thanks!! I’m definitely gonna have to get some skinnier wheels up front! Gotta figure out the bolt pattern.
@ChadsGarage1 Жыл бұрын
Gotta figure out an easy way to lift the front suspension. Any tips? Not sure what you were talking about with the ball joint reversal. I'm kinda ignorant....
@airkooledmotorwerks Жыл бұрын
looks like the donor "chassis" might be from a 1968 has a balljoint front w/ swing axle rear everything between the two is non vw custom, the carb looks like a 40idf so i'm guessing that the engine might be a 1776cc or bigger just going off the carb... it would be to big to run correctly if it was a 1600/1641cc not saying its not possible just more work to make right without any gain but the only way to tell for sure would be to pull a head off and measure the cylinder and stroke ... also the part you are referring to right after the aftermarket oilcooler is the factory oilcooler for the vw engine also its running a 009 distributor w/ electronic ignition... nice rail btw also what part of Indiana are you in? because my shop is in Louisville

Thank you for all that! I’m in Fort Wayne. So far this is a blast to drive! Very quick. Sounds like it has a cam. Whoever built it, seems to have done a great job! I do appreciate your info. Helps me out a lot.

@@airkooledmotorwerks thank you very much. I’m slightly ignorant when it comes to these. I did have a Super Beetle for a while and it was fun. I had plans on turning it into a rally car but quickly found out that it would be a huge pain in the butt to do so. They do seem fairly easy to work on. I just need to fill my brain with some knowledge.

@@ChadsGarage1 they are, and your right simple to work on but sometimes a pain in the a to get dialed in... But yours sounds to be running great for what I can hear
