Street photography is such a great genre because it’s broad enough for different interpretations. Even if you think it has all been done, there’s still room to create something amazing. What I’ve learned from my first 3 years is to spend as much time walking with your camera as possible. The moments can happen seemingly out of thin air. Just be ready.

My recommendation for beginners to the street would be whatever camera you have with a 28mm lens. F8. 1/500, auto ISO and use hyperfocal. With the camera basically a point and shoot, get used to being on the street. Once you are, branch out.

This is easily one of the best discussions I've ever seen on this topic. Subbing for sure. And, I need to find that cover you did of Sleepwalk that someone mentioned below. Love that song. Brian Setzer's version is one of my favorites...

Every time you were talking and I was like "oh, he should mention this too... " then, bam, it was the next thing you brought up haha. I teach painting and a lot of what you're talking about is universal to creative endeavors at all- which means it's pure gold. Camera gear, settings, specific lenses, etc. That stuff has to be covered. The philosophy of making images- with any medium- is the actual topic. The fact it's so very underrepresented in the community always baffled me. I think a big part of why is the one thing you flanked but didn't address directly: separating inspiration from creation. So, so many artists and street photographers simply do what they've seen. Saul Leiter is a great example. Every day the algorithms feed me photographers who literally just copy his shots ad nauseum. They could never make this video because at the end of the day they haven't put in those 10,000 hours like you did. They stopped where you started- they're just doing Suits forever ha. Anyway, great video. Exactly what I try to do with my own channel (painting focus). Super happy that someone is out here putting in the good work to help people get better 🤘

99.999999% of today's street photos are identical. They all depict the same monotonous scenes of people just standing or walking on the streets. Nothing but walking and walking. *LIFELESS* and *ZERO EMOTION* If you look at Sir Don McCullin's photos, you'll see real action: someone about to throw a grenade, people screaming, others in deep sorrow. There is always something interesting happening. I'm not saying you have to go to war to capture compelling photos, but fascinating moments happen around us all the time. Capture those, not just tedious shots of people walking on the streets.
