As someone who shoots classic manual focus lenses almost exclusively. let me offer you a tip for focusing. Don't rely on focus peaking. I use focus peaking to get me close, then I have viewfinder magnification assigned to one of my function buttons, this allows me to nail focus every time especially when shooting wide open with a very shallow depth of field where focus can be missed.

Totally agree focus assist magnifier works very well.

Such a pleasant experience watching your photography in your videos. I literally got into photography just after my South Korea trip and before my Japan trip. This was pre-covid. Still shooting now but I just wish I had more time with my photography before my overseas trips. Would have been a better experience if I had known what I know now back then.😁 Keep the videos coming my friend.👍

I enjoy your style of videos and photography. 12:47 is excellent. If it ever became an option for you, I'd like to see you try shooting with a Ricoh GRIII someday. I think it would be interesting to see what you do with it. It can be be a very challenging experience sometimes, and really changes how you think about taking photos, because of its focal length, but also its size, low profile, and portability.
@adriensanguinetti
@adriensanguinetti Жыл бұрын
12:47 was definitely my favorite! I actually own a Ricoh GRIII. I haven't made a video with it for a while but might do a new one soon. It is very challenging hence I have been thinking recently to replace it with the GRIIIx. I will still persevere a bit more before taking a decision.

@@adriensanguinetti that would be very cool! I highly recommend the struggle. I was always a 40mm or 55mm shooter for years, and I think it took about a year of almost exclusively forcing myself to use a 28mm to finally have a realisation about how to get the hang of it, and start envisioning compositions in that format. I actually started with two pieces of electrical tape on the screen to make a 2:1 crop, so I could focus only on the the extra width and have a cinema look. It really helped to adapt to the extra contextual space while still being subject focused. Taking the tape off felt enlightening after, and I felt like I have levelled up my composition skills just by enduring the challenge. I will have to search for your other Ricoh video while I work today. ✌️ 😉

Salut Adrien! Amazing video, as usual 😊 Did you have any trouble with the fact that this lens is APSC? Did you use the crop option from your Sony or did you shoot in full frame? The more I see this lens, the more I am tempted to get it. 50mm is my go to, and I am dreaming of a Voigtländer 50mm APO but my wallet don’t share the same dream 😅

I've been really debating whether I should go for a manual lens or not. I have an old Pentax film camera that I use sometimes when I want that analogue feel but maybe I should try it on a modern digital camera. I was eyeing that Voigtlander 35mm lens since it's my favourite focal length. Another great video as always, thanks for the content.

@@adriensanguinetti I also use the A7iv, if I want to be "discreet" my smallest lens is the 35gm but even then it's pretty big. This could be an option for a small and fun lens to use, I'll keep it in mind.

@@adriensanguinetti I’ve adapted Pentax K and M mount lenses to Sony mirrorless bodies - inexpensive adapters work well and IQ was as good as the quality Pentax lenses; Lightroom had lens profiles that were close enough for the old analog lenses.

We get what we pay for. “Reviews” of unsolicited free gear need careful treatment to keep channel integrity, IMO. However, I think you did a fair “hands on” assessment, Adrien - covered some key points like IQ and absence of LR lens profile. Lack of electrical contacts = no EXIF data - take notes if cam settings are important. Re peaking, what color and sensitivity setting did you select from Sony’s depth range? Can make a difference. Pre-focus, and lens focal range depth of focus markings can be another method to speed up manual focusing when a composition is fleeting, if that makes sense. Tip: when using Sony IBIS w/all manual lens, set focal length in camera menu - otherwise, even w/accurate focus peaking, IBIS error can cause blur. Did you have IBIS on during the shoot? 9:34 shadow biker a good capture. In “nice nonsense books” shot (😊) did you intend to focus on biker in reflection, or window sign? Agree, adage says 50mm matches eye “field of view”. However, photographer’s field of main subject attention could be narrower; I know mine is narrower, and from what I’ve seen of your posts, my guess is that your own “attention area” is better suited to medium tele - like your 85mm.
