I was under the impression one of the band members did the art. Their merch table had some very indie pressed comic issues, and the impression I got is it's somewhat of a concept band and all the stuff exists in a fiction which ties to a traditional comic narrative as well, and that one of the members was doing all that stuff (I'd assume the vocalist since, lyrics and stuff).

I don't think they sidestep goth, I think they capture real goth. The idea of gothic culture has been so watered down, this is and (I'm glad you mentioned them) wreck and reference and others in this same style capture goth shit

I had yet to see this video until today, but I've been listening to this album since last Thursday just non-stop. It is definitely not what you would define as "my style", but holy shit do I love this album. My favorite track by far, is "Our Lesions". It's just insane, and then halfway through the track, just breaks down, only to build back up again. I didn't know I could love so much noise.
