Street Triple Noise

The bike suddenly started making a tippy tappy noise. As it turn out, all is well and I'm a happy monkey again :)

8 years after this was posted your still helping people, I picked up a 2022 765RS and after about 6k miles it started noticing that exact ticking sound.

Thanks very much and reassuring to know I'm not the only one. I bought a brand new 2016 Street Triple in March and I've done 2500 miles and it began ticking exactly the same. I did the exact same as you around a month ago and took it back to the dealer and they reassured it was just the way they are. Still does it to this day. Seems on mine most pronounced between 2500 and 4000 rpm and comes from the cam chain tensioner.

My 2008 Street makes that ticking on the LEFT side.It's not the tensioner.My bike started that left side ticking at about 25000 miles.I also noticed cam chain rattle if I opened the throttle in high gear .The rattle disappeared as the revs built up.Anyway I just completed a service on the bike I checked the valve clearances.Inlet valves all spot on.5 out of 6 exhaust valves a little tight so took off the camshafts and re-shimmed those valves.Put in new plugs and air filter and also fitted a manual cam chain tensioner.So now the bike is up and running and sounds great.....no more cam chain rattle but there is still that left side ticking.Incidentally the valve shimming is not too hard a job for the home mechanic.You do not need to remove the throttle bodies as is stated in some "How to's"But you will probably need to remove the radiator top bolts and move it forward to make space to get the feeler gauge to the exhaust valves.I bought the tensioner from CCperformance for £32.It is very well made but a little over engineered.The adjustment bolt is huge!Well the bike now has nearly 38000 miles on the clock and has been brilliant.Just a burned stator about 4 years ago.I got the basic Street Triple but with hindsight should have bought the "R".The suspension on mine is crap!I have replaced the rear shock with the Honda CBR600 unit and it's a great improvement.And the bike sounds great with Mivv Suono cans.

I know this is old but that left side tick?. Anything ever come of it? I am at 4000miles on a tiger 1200 triple and have the tick. I seem to hear it on most triumph triple videos. just wondering if you experienced anything from it in the long run. Definitely going to a manual cam chain adjuster once warranty runs out.

Seems to be the injectors!!! That is the sound they make. Comes from the left side!

@@Comycboy06 But it definitely seems to be coming from the front of the cylinder.If I move my 'listening ear' to the inlet side I can barely hear it.In fact I eventually put it down to a slight leak of gas from the exhaust header on the left side cylinder.But now the bike is on 48000 miles...and I don't notice it.

Mine made the same noise.. I heard it's the injectors, so as a test I changed grade of gas. It is significantly reduced now after running 93 octane.

Useful vid. Mine has just started the right side tapping too. I suppose if Triumph say it's the tensioner and it's normal. Then I will go with that explanation.

sounds pretty normal to me mine is a bit noisy but i have 47000km on it and my mechanic said its quite normal and its the cam chain tensioner and it will sefl adjust

I have 2017 765.. it makes a lot of ticking.. I was freaking out it’s the clutch/friction plates.. which I can replace but would rather not tbf.. but this video made me reassured.. Clutch was slipping a lot under high RPMs in 5th and 6th.. turned out the slack on the clutch level was too tight, loosened it, clutch now solid as a rock.. no slippage.. but I do ride the bike hard, I use the quick shifter as lower speed and use it on 1st to 2nd which I feel the bike doesn’t like.. in city riding I’m dropping the clutch pretty hard and revving hard off the lights.. all this behaviour has probably put a lot of strain on the clutch plates and cause warping or early wear.. But would early wear of the clutch plates cause this kinda of rattling noise?

Evening Fergie,..i got my 2013 street at 1500 miles from new,..not ridden it another year before the exact same ticking started.took it to triumph and same story its normal wear n tear.....but sure as shit it wasnt doing it before!!! my bikes just out of warranty so wondering wether to get a new tensioner or not! ride safe

Took my bike back to the local shop, were the same mechanic said that it now sounded ok, so i guess the ticking sound is nothing to worry about. :)

Hey, Did the Cam chain tensioner automatically tighten the cam chain removing the sound or did you have to change the CCT? I am currently having the same issue, I am unsure of changing the CCT or just wait it out hoping the cam chain tensioner will sort it out it self.

Brand new 2019 Speed 3 RS here. 7 miles on the odometer and it was making this noise. The noise gets louder when it's in gear. I called the Triumph dealer I bought it from and the mechanic I spoke with says it's normal. I have to bring it in at the end of the week for the 500 mile service and he said they will look at it when I do. His words: "Just forget about and enjoy the ride.... " Lol, okay!

I made it to 1min 14secs,,, Cam chain tensioner,,, get an APE and tighten it by hand Ull never have this again... Wow engine has a lifetime warranty!! Holy Shit!! Oh yeah i hear it but the techs probably right maybe it is just between notches but im quite (Anal) when it comes to my sweety... Right now my issue is when she gets hot and i come to a full stop,,, throttle closed the oil light flickers...the tech sez i got water in the switch thats why,,, i tend to believe him cause my bike lives at 8500+Rpm so if there was an issue she'd B Fucked by now.. Buut as soon as theres frost on the roads im switchin my water/oil pump out for one from a Rocket 3... mines 2014 with most aggressive Arrow flash,,,De catted with an SC Project Conic and quick throttle and i have No problem pickin the front up at 60kmh with the stock 47 tooth rear.. I love my lil streety sweety oh ya the tensioner and a BMC air filter too!!! Keep Safe man...
