Streetcar RR Switching & Heavy Train Works Hard Up The Hill! 1st Trams For Opening Day In Cincinnati

Switching Tracks For Street Cars, First Streetcar Trains Leaving The Yard, Norfolk Southern Trains Passing At Ludlow Viewing Platform & Big Train With DPU Goes Up The Steep Grade Out Of The Ohio River Valley. Includes Information On Huge Development Next To Norfolk Southern Ludlow Yard. The Cincinnati Bell Connector is featured but I also took a trip 4 miles away to the Ludlow Viewing Platform.
I went to Cincinnati for the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade. The Cincinnati Bell Connector streetcar line was closed for the parade. I wanted to film the streetcars leaving the car barn for the first trips after the parade. The parade went from noon to 2pm. The streetcars left the car barn just after 3:30pm and the Reds game started at 4pm. 3 of the 4 streetcars were put into service. I missed the first one just by minutes but got the next two leaving. I was here with a friend who is not a Railfan so it was very difficult to figure out how to do the filming without doing any waiting. While he was eating I filmed the trams. This video shows the employees switching the tracks and the trams running clockwise on the 3.6 mile loop.
After filming them I decided to drive 4 miles to Ludlow, Kentucky to catch a couple trains at the Railfan viewing platform. I had the same problem leaving the parking garage that I had last year. Both times I paid for parking when I entered the garage. Last year my receipt would not work when I was leaving so I had to pay a second time in order to get out of the garage. This year the same thing happened a second garage. I decided I wasn't getting fooled for this scam a second time. I put my receipt up to the machine and it would not work ( although I already paid ) so I called the number on the machine. The number says it's there in case of problems. There were no employees at the parking garage and nobody answered the number. We tried to lift the gate up and it was built to prevent that. Another car was in the other lane with the same problem. I was thinking about driving through the gate when a woman with a months pass put her pass up to the machines and both of us were able to drive out. She left while other cars were coming so I don't know how they got out unless they paid a second time and I don't know if they had the same problem. We were at the Findlay Garage. It appears to be new. From now on I am only parking on the street. My car was broke into at one parking garage when I went to a model train convention.
Next, we went over to the Ludlow Viewing Platform. This is the new platform that I did a series of videos about when it was being built. When we got there an intermodal train was sitting there waiting to enter Gest Street Yard in Cincinnati. A southbound mixed freight pulled up and stopped. The northbound intermodal proceeded to Cincinnati. I decided to go near the top of the hill and catch the southbound train there since it would be more exciting. Before I left I explained what all the construction is across the tracks.
I stopped at Beechwood Road in Crescent Springs and caught the train going past with the locomotives working hard. This big train had a DPU near the rear. That was awesome watching it cross the railroad crossing with all that power.

The street cars in Cincinnati were very nice looking. Seems like it would be a great way to tour the city, however, I didn't really care for the bell. The NS mixed freight that followed was a fantastic train! It had nearly everything on it. The locomotives sounded fantastic coming over the top of the hill. It was 147 cars and a LOT DPU! There was a very nice string of box cars near the end! I know you liked them, JT. 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤

Here in the Salt Lake Valley here in Utah we have Traxs very much like this .Public transportation. They go up Main street in Salt Lake City Utah. It is nice for anyone who has never road the rails. You get on pay a fee and off you go. The trains runs on electricity.

Anyone else notice the little signals embedded in the pavement at the streetcar carbarn. If you look closely at the switches outside the fenced-in area, you can see when the attendant throws the switch for the straight route, a little green light comes on between the rails. Presumably, there is a corresponding red light for when the switch is thrown to the diverging route, but it's not easily visible from curbside looking into the sunlight.

Thank you, Jaw Tooth, for including the streetcar switching in this video. The way the switches were moved to allow the streetcars to move from one track to another was interesting to watch. The traom action at the Ludlow Viewing Platform was slow. However, the train action in Crescent Springs, Kentucky of the same southbound train showed how hard the engines and DPU must work to pull a train up The Hill. I wonder how long it is going to take the developer to build all the housing that is planned for that property across the tracks from the Ludlow Viewing Platform.

That development is going to take a couple years I would bet. That is a huge one. The people who live near it are not happy. They are concerned with water runoff. I plan on showing it in stages. I will get some close up video the next time. Thanks for watching Thomas!

Interesting to see footage of the Cincinnati streetcar system. The use of stickers for advertising on the cars is pretty Universal and the car barn looks like it's in an area being rebuilt and upgraded. Milwaukee is somewhat along the same line with no fare charged so the tax dollar has to cover it. The one building at the terminal is extremely similar do a building from across the street where I worked and had an elevator inside to store buses on various floors. They want to expand to about three other locations but there are no federal funds in the near future. As for that DPU it was shoulder to the drawbar with mostly loads ranging from soybean meal to spent distillers grain and tankers of ethanol. One of the new tankers was RVRX Riverview Rail Leasing. Sigh just thinking back to Cincinnati in the Glory Years with B&O. C&O. L&N. SOU. N&W. PRR. NYC plus the terminal company. Numerous yards with all their structures and some great Street running sections where older power reigned. Praying for a blessed Easter to all viewers which is also starting to become a forgotten holiday
