the best part of this live video is them playing at 2x the normal speed and killing it and laughing about it the whole time
@davefaust73179 ай бұрын
You'd think playing that fast is unsustainable but if you've ever been playing on stage when the whole crowd is loving it, the pure energy they project amps things up in a way I've never felt in any other situation. That crowd must have been absolutely thrilled every second of the show!

Ska music is all about the accented rhythms on the off beat that are usually played by a guitar or keyboard. Ska Punk bands typically play the off beat ska rhythm during verses (sometimes using a cleaner or brighter guitar tone) and then bring in the loud, crunchy punk energy for the choruses. Great examples of this include the song "New Girl" by The Suicide Machines and "Beer (Song)" by Mustard Plug. I highly recommend you dive deeper into Streetlight's discography. Their music has been influenced by a shit ton of different genres from classical and folk to latin and jazz. They're easily one of the most talented and original bands still around in their scene today.
@Materialist39 Жыл бұрын
New Girl is such a beautiful example of what you’re saying, the verse and pre chorus percussion especially is so antithetical to what’s expected for the style and tempo. It’s been a while since I’ve listened / played THPS but you’ve brought it back lol

My second suggestion would be the song Here’s To Life, and follow up with the B.O.T.A.R. version of the same song. Also, I’ve always felt Streetlight was different from all the other “ska punk” bands. They utilize all the brass instruments much more and they often lead the song. They have many parts that are more mariachi or jazz than reggae influenced. They just get called ska punk because it’s punk speed and vocals with brass. But I think they’re musically more creative and advanced than Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Mustard Plug, etc.

I think Streetlight reactions are the #1 thing I’ll click on youtube, above anything else ever, especially if I know the reactor will really enjoy them. But also consider doing lyrical breakdowns, because their lyrics are some of the most inspirational words I’ve ever heard. They don’t have a single song that isn’t really deep and inspirational, so combined with their instrumental complexity, they’re just such a mindblowing listen. Lyrics or not, check out If Only for Memories, With Any Sort of Certainty, The Hands that Thieve, Somewhere in the Between, or even just the studio version of this song for more compositional brilliance. Or check out their older stuff like Keasby Nights, Here’s to Life, or Everything Went Numb for a less refined but more “powered up” sound.

13 years ago I was in the 2nd last concert streetlight manifesto played in Continental Europe. A tiny youth center in Cologne, Germany. Since 2010 they didn't play in continental Europe at all anymore, only UK and Ireland. I worked as a video game tester at Nintendo in Frankfurt am Main at the time and found out on a rather short notice about the concert. Streetlight is one of my favourite bands for almost 20 years now, unreal how somewhere in the between saved my life once. Going to the concert was My first intuitive decision ever in my life, and it was worth everything. The Ticket for the concert cost next to nothing (less than 20 Euros) but everything to get to the concert and back cost me like 250 or 300. So basically I paid 15x the ticket cost just to see them and I'm so glad I did. Since then I've seen many more bands, bands considered of higher status and celebrity, but none came even remotely close to streetlight manifesto in that tiny youth center in 2010 playing a crowd of teens and a bunch of mid 20s hippies and me, the nerdy videogame tester. Since then yeah, it's been breaking my heart but streetlight manifesto hasn't played Continental Europe ever since. I hope that their new music will change that, and that they'll finally return at last in 2024 or 2025.
