I'm a HUGE Hannibal fan. I discovered him on his podcast - "Across the Table." I was going through an incredibly difficult period in my life in 2020 after losing "my person" of 44 years in late 2019. He probably saved my life, or certainly kept me going. He does way more than magic on his channel - he inspires, he reads books to anyone who might be sitting at home alone who needs a book read to them, and he gives hope to complete strangers. Thank you for showing Hannibal at his best. I have smashed the like button and am a new follower. ❤

Happy you talked about the applause queue lines. I've always been apprehensive about them but knew someone as experienced as you must have a good reason for using them. What you said makes a lot of sense.

Sometimes the Magician is too good, so the audience doesn't even understand what just happened. It's like that in every field. A soccer player might expertly control a ball, but people who don't play the game don't understand the skill required. Or a chemist might make gold from lead, and the average person's reaction would be "Oh, like the guy in the fable", not realizing just how amazing an accomplishment that is. You see this most with street magic. Theater audiences are attending a magic show because they appreciate the craft (just like those who witness the soccer skills live are mostly aware of the skill required). But street magic is frequently performed in front of some truly clueless people, who will react to the most amazing sleight of hand by just staring and blinking. They simply don't know enough to be amazed by what they're seeing.

I really appreciate that he’s actually adding to this and explaining what’s so well done about it, it’s so easy to just “react” to content without adding anything but he explains all the subtleties of control and the dynamics that you wouldn’t notice in a very informative way

It makes so much sense your comment about cueing the audience for applause. You entire act hinges on your conducting our attention, in every sense of the word, and our "suspension of disbelief" which is to submit to your cues, so naturally we would be waiting to be "told" when to appreciate it.
@davedennis6042 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad I saw this video. I commented that you remind me of him. I love when you magicians lead the audience into a "mistake" and then act surprised when the trick worked but differently than you thought. That just never gets old to me.

I saw this guy years ago and it is still Great to watch. I had forgotten his name, good to hear he is still around. Hey, I bet you have heard of Tom Mullica he did a lot of magic with cigarettes, I saw several of his acts on TV. I think he passed on sometime back. I got to exchange emails with him, he seemed to be a great guy. Strange how so many Great performers just vanish. I saw in one of your videos where someone commented that Rick Jay had passed away. Say do you remember a magazine called, Linking Rings or another was called, I.B.M. International Brotherhood of Magicians ? Last time I saw one of these was back in the early 70's.

All good art involves tension and release. In fact, all good life experiences do as well. Hannibal builds extra tension by pretending that his trick has gone wrong. And his personal story about why he needs it to go right makes us even more invested in the outcome. Rather than wanting to catch him out, we want him to succeed, and are even more pleased by the trick working.

The premise for Wild Card here is more Tommy Wonder's than it is Hannibal's. Nothing wrong with that, I suspect it's the same handling too. Speaking of, you should totally do something on Wonder's material. His two cup routine is to die for. If you haven't seen, I can guarantee he will fool you badly.

Yes…Typically when this trick is done you not supposed to tilt the sticks so much, as that’s a dead giveaway that there’s a weight attached to the string.
