I saw Paul Daniels live in one of his last-ever shows, at Exeter Barnfield Theatre in 2015, just a year before he sadly passed away. It was a disappointingly small audience for a man who would once have filled the place twice over, but he still put on an amazing show. I was lucky enough to be called up on stage as the stooge for a couple of tricks, a hypnotism routine with the sticky chair/pin on the chair gag, and a coin that vanished and reappeared inside a lemon. Despite his age, he was as smooth as silk, and even though I was mere feet away, and have watched enough magic shows that I knew what to look for, I didn't see a thing. Of course, I do now know how the "hypnosis" gag works, but that's a secret I'll take to my grave! After the show, he and Debbie came out to the bar and met the audience, and were happy to pose for a photo with me. Truly a master of his art, a real gentleman and sadly missed.

Great post, Pauls lack of audiences towards the end were not course his fault...it was more to do with the fact that live 'magic' audiences had dropped off everywhere for all magicians, it just wasnt the thing to go and see for a while...snooker went through a similar phase, I saw him many times live and I can honestly say he performed roughly the same tricks every time over 20 or 30 years..its a bit like a singer always having to sing their greatest hits...however for me it was the delivery that was always spot on :)

Another great video! I saw Paul Daniels live in the eighties and bought a deck of cards after the show called the Svengali Deck. Half of the cards were normal, and half were the nine of hearts, the latter being slightly shorter than the other cards. One of the tricks was to arrange the cards alternately, normal card/nine of hearts, then get a spectator to push a card out with a knife, the idea being that the blade would slip into one of the grooves created by the shorter cards, and it would automatically be the nine of hearts. After plucking up courage, I showed it to my father, it worked, then he grabbed the cards out of my hand and looked through them, thus ruining the other 19 tricks in the pack and ending my fledgling career in magic. 😆 Debbie McGee was once interviewed on Mrs Merton, a spoof chat show, and was asked, "So, what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?" She took the joke with good grace.

I interviewed Paul Daniels 20 years ago after he had finished a show in Edinburgh by the side of the stage, which was just a slightly raised dais. I was with two friends and while he and I talked, Daniels was continually doing card tricks for my friends which were brilliant pieces of magic. And just to keep them entertained. Paul Daniels and the great Ali Bongo were far and away the away my favourites as I like magic that is just about fun and entertainment and not the ego of the performer so it’s great to see some appreciation for that style. Daniels also put so many great magic acts in front of the cameras on his shows; there’s a whole generation in the UK who were amazed by Tom Noddy the Bubble Guy and terrified by Hans Moretti. Good luck to you chief.

I loved this video. As a British kid in the 80’s the Paul Daniel’s magic show on a Saturday night was amazing. He also had fantastic guest magicians from around the world which without the internet there was no way we would have heard of them let alone seen them. So glad you name him as an inspiration to you. National treasure to us Brits. I saw his son Martin perform and he was also very good. The best magician I have seen was Lance Burton in Las Vegas many years ago

Paul Daniels was a household name here in the UK when I was growing up. Still is to some extent. He presented shows, had his own kids TV show (Wizbit), and I even had his kids magic kit when I was little. I literally grew up with this guy but, looking back, I always figured he was just in the right place at the right time to become a celebrity. I don't think I ever appreciated how uniquely talented he was before. Thank you for giving me fresh eyes on a guy who was a staple of my childhood.

It was not only from watching his performance but it was also from watching Jason's reaction to the performance as well. I was impressed with every short that Ive seen from you Jason, your likability is undeniable. Thank you for turning us onto what inspired you to be the entertainer that you are. I absolutely see it now. You did something with this video that has made me a huge fan, I was already a fan but this turned a corner, and I am a huge fucking fan now! You are such a kind and genuine person that one can't help but love you both as a performer and a person. Paul is no doubt smiling on you my friend. That was incredibly endearing to watch and almost made me emotionnal to see how much an inspiring effect it had on you and your work, it made me smile to hear your famous "union rules for magicians" bit. Since im such a big fan of your chill videos, it was very interesting and very enjoyable for me to watch. This kind of stuff (the "what inspired me" things of life gets me choked up when i reveal such a thing to a loved one,(it doesn't even need to be about magic, it can even be about a performers demeanor and genuine kindness and enjoyment for what they do that can just make you instantly look up to them and have that authenticity just be completely encapsulating for my heart) ... when i can communicate how trivial it may be for the casual watcher yet how fundamentally cherished those bits are for me, and see that some actually become interested in it almost as a way to get to know me better, i just think thats a wonderful cool life moment, and i think alot of your fans watching this video will feel like just that, they know you that much more now and understand the emphasis on the nice chill positive well intentionned vibe in your videos and stuff and i just find it to be all that much cooler. Definitely dope! Cool share! Cheers from reverse land... Canada! ✌🐰

Thank you for this Jason, it brought back so many good memories from my childhood. My sister and I used to hear mum and dad watching The Paul Daniels Magic Show, and would lie down at the top of the stairs peering into the living room to watch when we should have been in bed. Usually mum or dad would notice us and let us come down and watch the show. I loved his "You'll like this... not a lot" catchphrase. I can even forgive him for giving us Wizbit!

David Copperfield, Lance Burton and Penn & Teller were some of my earliest magician memories. Also, after seeing a card manipulation routine by Jeff McBride, I just had to import (back in the dial up internet days) his tutorial video set The Art of Card Manipulation. That's from The Paul Daniels Magic Show which was on prime time UK TV every Saturday evening. His continuous patter was great, as was the magic. Paul is definitely one of the all-time greats not only because of the high quality of all his illusions, big and small, but his all-round entertainment factor. If you can find it on YT, one memorable occasion was when he did the sword through the neck trick on Michael Grade, then Head of ITV and, in effect, Paul's boss...."Hold perfectly still, sir, I'm going to enter you from behind..." 😂. MG was absolutely cacking himself!

Did see PD in Belfast. A lot of Debbie's relations were in the audience and Paul came out in the interval and sat chatting to them. Seemed such a decent man behind the showbiz stuff. One evening, after a show, another young magician went to a friends house at about 10pm and met Paul, he talked to us both for almost 6 hours, 6 hours that changed my magic for ever. I think you are even better than you give yourself credit for. Regarding Paul Daniels, (using his catch phrase, "you're going to like this, not a lot"), his magic shows on TV back in the 80's were brilliant (I'm guessing you have seen many of them). I was lucky enough to see him live on a couple of occasions and got to meet him and Debbie back stage.
