Another good thing to-do is seal around the cap and any gaps so coolant or oil can't get in .

Ok, it’s not pronounced “A SELL” it’s like accelerate. The first five letters of accelerate “ACCEL” pronounced “AK SELL” I agree with what you are saying about the quality of the parts. I’m about to do an opti spark distributor replacement on my 92 C4 convertible & I appreciate the info you put out. If it weren’t for you who knows how long mine would last before I’d have to do it all over again & it’s no small task to replace it. Your right about not thinking the opti spark would be the problem after it was just replaced. I already replaced the fuel filter thinking that was it. So thank you for making this video. Just know it’s very much appreciated!! I’m going to follow your suggestions, locktite & JB weld. Outstanding!!

Dude this is such a great video, I'm so fed up also with the optispark always failing. Will definitely be loctiting those rotor screws but not sure about the jb weld. The truth is, if your car is failing just go to the optispark before chasing ghosts everywhere else around the car

Mate if you're still struggling with this issue you need to get yourself a Petris and probably never look back. Chris is a top bloke and knows his stuff :) That touching the sensor issue is common on the cheap ones usually, but often they do it only when the rotor screws back out. I rebuild the OEM spline drive 92-94 version using the MSD cap and rotor which adds venting. I haven't ever had to rebuild a 95-97 version so i haven't ever opened one up and i don't have any here. I did a 94 Corvette just yesterday and it had a dead Chinese spine drive in it, the rotor in those is so shit i am surprised this one lasted two years. One screw was still tight, the other was almost backed out. Funny enough, the cap on those black coloured Chinese cheap shit distributors isn't too bad really, the rest of the assembly is GARBAGE, and you're right, no love going into that. The OEM factory fitted unit in my 93 lasted 29 years and was still working fine, although the bearing was my main concern, and when i swapped it out the bearing was damn near impossible to turn by hand.

Jameel Spradley Great! Thank you for the inspiration. Have you tried the Summit Racing brand optispark? I was researching online and read so good reviews about it. I will continue with the rebuild. Only thing that has me saying out loud "STUPID", is the fact that the engineers positioned the opti right next to the water pump. I overstand the hood clearance issue, but still though.
@U2Jaime13175 жыл бұрын
@@marktheristal convert to electric water pump and it will never leak again. Also the engine won't drive the water pump anymore (hence "electric") and your engine gets some more power since it has one less drive to deal with. Look up videos about it. It also keeps the car running more cool since the electric water pump is at a constant volume unlike the OEM water pump which only pumps depending on how many revs the motor drives it to. It can also cool your car while it is off since it is electric (can stay on while key is on run position). Horsepower, cooler engine, no leaks... for 280 bucks? Come on now get to it!! A new OEM waterpump that will eventually leak and go bad or this amazing mod Meziere WP118HD

Eddie Lyons the 95 cap should work but make sure to plug the vent if your 94 opti isn't vented, I think they switched to vented optis in 95 but I could be wrong
@knation928 жыл бұрын
Ethan Eliachar but you can't do that or you make a vacuum in the cap and could bend the rotor, the vented opti has a vent in the opti housing also so the air can come in and go out of the opti so the water can be drawn out of it if it gets in, switching to a vented opti means you need to change to a 95+ timing cover, timing set, and camshaft or pull the pin out of the 95+ camshaft and put it in you 93-94 camshaft because the pin for 95-97 is longer

ALL, ALL, ALL, aftermarket Optis are garbage, because NONE, NONE, NONE of them use the factory Mitsubishi sensor. They ALL, ALL, ALL use cheap Chinese counterfeits. Mitsubishi will ONLY sell a minimum of 10,000 units at a time, and even GM waits until they think they can justify selling 10,000 refurb Optis before placing an order. I even tried a 800.00 MSD "Billet" opti, put the whole motor back together, and the MSD opti was BAD out of the box!!! Took it apart, looked at the sensor, and obviously cheap Chinese JUNK. Called MSD 'engineer" who could barely speak English, and confirmed the Opti was bad, but gave me this BS about using "their own sensor". Folks, it's crap. Furthemore, if you use any type of aftermarket ignition CDI Booster box, you're asking for more premature failure, as higher voltage risks more failure. I actually had one burn a hole, strait through the cap where the coil wire plugs in, and short out to the back of the water pump, so badly, it got to the point the car would not even start or run! Conclusion: Keep to stock OEM GM opti. Use a manifying glass, and make sure you see the Mitsubishi logo on the sensor. And don't use a spark booster box.
