Great explanation. Why is the stress element considered to be a square? Why not triangle or pentagon?

Due to continuum, we assume that the density at every point is same and that's why we consider every point to a cube and if ye look that cube in 2d it shows a square.... I hope u understand

It has to do with the development of the stress transformation equations for Mohr's circle. A maximum and a minimum normal stress occur at some particular orientation of the initial stress element, 20 degrees in the professor's example.
