I will me towing a track loader/trailer combo with a total weight of 11,000 pounds once or twice a year for 350 mile round trip. Much lighter loads more frequently. I actually had the owner of a reputable Chevy dealership highly advise me against a diesel. He said dealing with the DEF, DPF, and related emissions issues was a nightmare for many people. It was an easy decision in my particular situation to go with a 2024 L8T/Allison 10 speed combination.

I think the truck performed well. These new gas trucks are a great option for someone who doesn't tow all the time. I myself do not want to deal with emissions and wouldn't work a new diesel the way it wants to be worked and will be ordering a new Chevy 2500 or 3500 with the L8T.

Yep, imo the gassers are the only option unless some makes their $$ towing high mileage. Anything less than that niche' owner, in modern times the gasser is it.

Same here, full time or traveling back and fourth across the county, Diesel. For the guy like me who tows 9,000 pounds to OBX twice a year and camps within 300 miles of home 6 or 8 times, it’s 3/4 gas all day everyday! Gas trucks have come along way the last few years

Great review JB! I think this gasser is just fine for those not full timing and driving frequently in the mountains. Personally, I want a diesel even though I don't necessarily need one at the moment. That said, weighing wants and needs is a major life struggle!

As someone who pulls a 19 bow rider behind a 34 fiver I would strongly encourage matching expectations to equipment and circumstance. That is a lot of camper on a lot of grade. Asset prior you are asking the uphill to be done on 70% of maximum capacity. By the same token, you are relying on engine breaking exclusively on the downhill. The truck performed well.

Cool. I recognize the terrain in eastern Utah grade on I-80. Nice area of the country. I never towed up it, only down it, because I hot-shotted travel trailers for 4 years. Always pulling to the west out of Indiana, I would drop my trailer, then head east up the Wasatch to go home. The big challenge was at the series of hills we called The Three Sisters outside of Evanston, Wyoming. I ran with a Cummins turbodiesel, and I typically climbed those kinds of grades at 52 mph, 2200 rpm. The low-speed, high-torque power output of a turbodiesel sure spoils you. The engine never feels strained. Your truck did well holding WOT at 3800 rpm, 49 mph for most of the hill. That's just a nice workout for the engine.

This truck really does a great job with my 13,500 lb fifth wheel, the Duramax is the way to go if you’re towing anything. Also gets 20 mpg combined when not towing. It’s my view that the gas trucks have reached the point where they make more sense for the vast majority of RVrs including those towing larger 5th wheels and doing so full time. The simple fact is that the diesel engine will cost you a lot more to buy upfront, it will cost more to own and operate, and it will only recover around $6k of the $10k+ you paid for it at resale time. Yeah an exhaust brake is nice but you can absolutely descend the steepest of grades safely in a gas engine by getting geared down and applying your brakes occasionally which won’t come remotely close to getting them hot. The only reason to buy a diesel is because your RV is heavy enough that you need that level of power (something like a DRV or a big toy hauler) or you just want it. But we should stop pretending that a 14k or 16k 5th wheel demands a diesel engine especially if your full time. It just doesn’t.

Set the cruse at 45 and let the truck do the work, it’ll probably hold around 60 on that steep of a hill but you’ll do less braking. Normally GM grade braking doesn’t engage in less your cruise is on or your on the brake. I normally just press the brake enough were the lights come on, gas braking isn’t as strong so definitely start sooner than you would in a diesel. I tow about 10k with a 14 LTZ 5.3l e85 regularly and the grade braking definitely helps, I had an 05 before and it’s sucks without it plus the rear brakes suck on 03-07

It all depends on what you wish to do. I have a 34 foot toy hauler and while sometimes the Harley can go it’s more for the added space that I can decide what to do with. I configure it as needed with kayaks , the bicycles , Harley. The party deck is always nice. I have also sold and owned a lot of RVs. The only one I didn’t like were 5th wheels. The reasons ? Due to the high ceilings cooking is an issue even with 3 50k units. If you run all three at max they will trip fuses all the time. Even the best units like the grand designs They are extremely heavy. People often really overload them and then wonder why they cracked the frame. I have seen them in the shop way over loaded. I am using a GMC 2500 turbo diesel that’s a a 2023. I get 10.1 MPG. Loser with a trailer weight loaded of 9-10k. I am pretty happy with that.

Nice video. I’ve skimmed through the comments and haven’t seen anyone mention this but you absolutely killed your momentum when you let up on the grade to get down to 45-46 mph. It’s amazing the truck got you back to 50 honestly. That goes for diesels too but obviously they can recover better than a gas engine. But even still, a steep enough grade and heavy enough weight and you lose momentum like that and you are done lol. Also noway that double tanker was loaded that passed you lol. He was definitely empty. Looked like the truck did pretty good though. You stayed at or below 4,000 rpm the entire way. I am a little surprised that the temp was 210-212 range. That seems a good amount hotter than most other 10 speed reviews towing similar weight. As for going downhill, I usually don’t use the manual mode but that is a viable option. With my 6 speed truck, once you hit the brakes about 2 times it shifts all the way to 2nd gear. I do think grade shifting is a little bit of a problem with the 10 speeds. That’s a downfall to having close ratios I guess. So I may would just use the manual mode in a 10 speed and downshift it as low as it would allow for a steep grade.

I agree with you. The only reason the trans got up to 210 is because he slowed down. I have the diesel my youngest son has the gas 6 speed and my oldest son has the ford 7.3. Gm’s 10 speed is the best. It keeps you in the right gear speeding up or slowing down. The six speed does as good as expected. The ford 10 speed is very busy.

@@jfaulk5717 yes the weight of the truck matters. My 3500 Chevy 8.1 gas is a 4x4 crewcab with a long bed dually weighing in at 8,800lbs it’s a tank. It can handle a heavy load better and safer , I feel more relaxed and safe having 6 tires on the pavement to hold the load. And it has the 4.10 rear end gears and the smaller 235 - 75 R - 16 tires help with the pulling toque compared my 2500 Duramax that is a 4x4 Excab shorter 6.5ft bed and 3.73 read end gear and the taller 265-75- 16 tires. The 2001 Chevy Duramax came out with the 245-75-16 tires but for the better looks we put the taller 265-75-16’s which will cause it to loose a little on the power ( toque) taking off. My Duramax does have a K&N cold air breather which helps, I am going to put a K&N cold air breather on my 3500 8.1 also which will help in horse power and fuel mileage. I like both of my trucks. My 2001 2500 Duramax has only 105,000 miles on it and is a very nice clean sharp truck black in color and has been garage kept. Whereas my 2004 3500 8.1 gas has 265,000 miles on it which still runs super great a lot of those mile were put on it driving the interstate highway , last year I replaced all the parts to the front end that needed it and put 4 new heavy duty shocks on it, and new tires. Great video & comparison , however for those of us looking to purchase a diesel or gas 1 ton truck to pull a trailer only maybe a dozen times a year for Boondocking & then use it for our daily driver what would your recommendation be concerning Quality, reliability & routine maintenance ? ? After watching many “You Tube “ videos of the Ford gas ⛽️ New Godzilla’s with engine & transmissions issues & the issues with diesel emissions on all new trucks I am leaning toward a gas engine with reliable transmission like the Allison . Spending 70-100 k on a new or few years older truck I want something that’s reliable , both from an engine standpoint & transmission. Gas mileage is important but I am not buying a one ton truck 🛻 for fuel savings , more for reliability & safety on towing up & down these passes of Colorado & out west . I tend to keep my vehicles forever , have a 1995 Toyota Landcuiser with 250,00 Miles but can only tow 5,000 lbs . Would buy a HD Toyota Truck if they ever built one . Thx again , luv your info & videos & content. 👍⚾️

Great video, but two things, you called your gooseneck a fifth wheel, those things are different, the other thing is you stated that the transmission in the diesel did better with engine braking. The engine is the difference here, not the transmission, the engine compression to be more precise, modern diesel engines are somewhere around a 16:1 compression ratio, the gas motor is gonna be some where between 9 and 10:1 compression ratio meaning the diesel will be harder to spin over, also the exhaust brake also helps with that engine braking.

if GM won’t make a larger gas engine comparable to Ford’s 7.3 displacement, they need to gear the hell out of the L8T. Give consumers another option besides 3:73. Throw some 4:10’s in a pickup version and maybe even 4.44/4.56 in a dually “max tow” or chassis cab configuration with this power plant.
@SMiller5488

My 2024 didn't get here yet. I didn't buy a diesel do to pricing. But every truck I had before was diesel. My last diesel was a 2012 3500 dodge dually with 6speed manual. U want some good braking buy a dodge cummins with 6speed manual with the exhaust brake u would never have to touch the brakes. The automatic trucks the exhaust brake doesn't work that good.

I have a ‘17 ram 6 spd manual right now, my previous one was a ‘14 Cummins with the 68rfe. While the manual is fantastic with the exhaust brake, that ‘14 wasn’t too bad either and leaps & bounds better than the powerstroke. My company truck is a ‘22 f350 powerstroke, the exhaust braking in it is nearly nonexistent. It pulls great, tons of power, just very lacking with the exhaust braking.

I've seen people pull off thinking the King pin locked and smashing their bed on their nice beer new truck.

Double reply- I think the 10 speeds from gm are fine. They’ll help during climbs at various speeds and while merging. But that’s about it. On an open road the 5th and 6th gear on a 6 speed are similar to the 8 and 9 on a 10 speed. I stay mainly in 5th with tow mode but the truck will drop it to 6th if wind isn’t an issue.
