I have had my 24 2500hd Silverado 6,6 gas for about 3 months. I traded a 22 2500hd for it. I pull a 22 Mesa Ridge fifth wheel (est 12000 lbs). The 10 speed pulls it slightly better that the 6 speed. Fuel economy is between 7-8 mph. I am still 10k cheaper than the diesel, No DEF, lower maintenance cost.

18.67% for your pin weight. I want to say the reason I always tell you that you need a dually is solely for towing stability at highway speeds. The numbers clearly work for a SRW, and for a Chevy, a 2500 would even work with your trailer with nearly 400 pounds of payload left (more probably considering your truck is 500 pounds heavier than most 2020-2023 trucks). But with a long, high profile trailer, weight is not the biggest issue and having those two extra tires on the ground and wider stance makes all the difference. So my recommendation is always a dually even for a weekend warrior if you can, but definitely a dually if you’re towing all the time.
@JosephKinnaman
@JosephKinnaman Жыл бұрын
Couldn’t agree more. My son in his van to me in my 96 1 ton dually …… Hey slow down I’m all over the place with this wind. Me…. Sorry , didn’t notice the wind. Get dually if you can for the stability.
@ThePackDad
@ThePackDad Жыл бұрын
Are you saying you'd go purchase a dually even to tow a 7500lb TT on the weekends? I do get wanting that stability if you had it before, but not sure if you mean you'd want dually even for lower weights. Not sure it's worth jump from my 350 gas to diesel, much less a dually. But I defer to those with more experience.
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Жыл бұрын
@@ThePackDad I would say buy a dually if you can (doesn’t have to be a diesel) because the towing difference from a SRW is a night and day difference, and yes even for a lighter weight trailer. If you ever get a chance to tow say 7,500 pounds on an open trailer and then tow the same weight but in and enclosed trailer/camper/any other high profile trailer you will see the difference the type of trailer makes in the towing experience. Now I’m not saying a SRW can’t do it. I have a 2500 truck myself because I didn’t want to drive a dually everyday. However, if I had another vehicle as a daily driver I would have 100% bought a 3500 dually to tow my 8.5’x24’ enclosed car trailer because it truly is a major difference in towing.
@ThePackDad
@ThePackDad Жыл бұрын
@@matthewanderson9912 That makes sense. My scenario doesn't include enough mileage or troublesome roads to justify. I'm mostly towing a 32' TT so I do get the wind stability offset you're talking about between S and DRW in that case. I supposed I might be lying to myself if I said I wouldn't consider a DRW if I (likewise) had a smaller daily driver. * I keep thinking DRW's are only diesel. Long story.🙄 Thanks !

@@ThePackDad yeah I guess I should have just said if you’re buying a dedicated tow rig then just get a dually lol. Gas duallies are out there. Maybe not common but I don’t want to call them rare either.

Main reason my friend went diesel was the exhaust brake for downhills and he was only towing 8500lbs at the time. I'm towing 7200lbs with my '17 gas 6.2L with no trouble up or downhill. Get better mileage overall than he does, but I do like the idea of a diesel.

@@ThePackDadI like the idea of a diesel 20 years ago. Thankfully, I think the EPA might be able to be challenged head on over diesel emissions causing down time and lost wages. Just need an interested party to take up the fight.

Man this is very helpful! I hope you do a breakdown of the cat scale on the dually as well. I’m curious to see how the front axel weight is affected compared to the regular bed of your SRW. I would hope that with a long bed the front axel would get a small amount of weight added since the hitch is further forward in relation to the axel.

Towing your trailer empty is one thing, but since water is the heaviest part of added weight, how much does a full water tank change your weights. This is important to know since placement of the water tank in the trailer has a big effect. On my Solitude 310GK the fresh water tank is around 88 gallons and it is behind the rear axle of the trailer. If I travel with my water tank empty it adds a lot of pin weight, and towing with it full removes a lot of pin weight. I don't worry as much about holding tanks, because I usually try to dump them before traveling.

i was so confused when I learned that some trailers have their tanks closer to the front... most of the ones Im familiar with have them on the axle which just makes sense physically.

Just picked up my 2024 GMC 2500 AT4 L8T. After putting just under 1000 miles on it, we took it camping last weekend. Put it in front of our 9000lb travel trailer and was super bummed with the fuel economy. I averaged 7.2mpg round trip, and only got 230 miles on the tank. Pulled back into town on fumes showing 229.7 miles on the trip. The truck pulled the trailer without ANY issue whatsoever. Plenty of power, and the trans is wonderfully smooth! However, fuel economy wasn't very impressive. I'm aware the engine is still breaking-in and it will most likely get another 1-2mpg once we get some more miles on the road. So time will tell. If you're considering a new 2024 L8T engine mated to the 10-speed tranny... it's REALLY, REALLY good... just be aware the fuel economy isn't anything to be excited about. Plan on hitting a bunch of fuel stations on your trip. LOL

Thanks for sharing your experience on this. I have a 2023 Ford F250 Tremor (with the 4.30s, obviously) and I had a similar experience towing my Dad’s 8,000 pound travel trailer. We got around 7.8 MPG over around 250 miles. The important context here is that we towed starting around 5,000 feet of elevation up to our camp spot in the big horns at 9,000 feet. It also didn’t help that the wind was blowing like crazy. I certainly wasn’t stoked about the MPG, but I suppose not all that surprised either! It’s just important that folks like you and I share our experiences so people know what to expect when they buy a gas truck to tow.
@terrygeorge3133
@terrygeorge3133 Жыл бұрын
@@heathmcateer No worries. Our elevation starts at about 4400ft and we went up 6500ft. Not a huge difference, but a little bit of an incline when heading up into the mountains. No wind to hinder the trip though, thank God. I also own a 2022 F250 Tremor with the 6.7L Powerstroke and I know there is ZERO comparison between the two when towing. The diesel is unbeatable in that segment. That said, I was pleasantly surprised how rock solid the AT4 felt on the trip. I was a little fearful that the gasser wouldn't feel as planted as the diesel Tremor, but no disappointments there. It was awesome. Cruise control worked like a champ, but climbing and descending. Hardly ever had to use my brakes when heading back down. Just set the cruise and the truck did exactly what it was supposed to and held me at the speed I wanted to be at. Here's some info that DID blow me away.... weighed both trucks, at the same CAT scales, with full tanks of fuel and my wife and I in the front seats.. The 6.7L Tremor weighed in @ 8180lbs. The 6.6L gas AT4 weighed in at an eye opening 7940lbs. That I was NOT expecting! LOL
