Wow, but I almost feel like the direct drive helped it out here because it might be able to direct the power better than a belt can. Just a thought.

I think it struggled because of the direct drive. The motor is turning the same speed as the drum's speed as it is attached. In non direct drive washing machines the motor has smaller radius than the drum's. In that way, in order for the drum to tumble one round the motor turns 4 (or more) so it needs less strength.

That's true but the belt is a problem on its own. No matter how strong the motor is, after one point the belt starts slipping on the motor pulley and sometimes fully comes off. A great solution to this would be a cogged belt&pulley, however I don't think any domestic washing machine manufacturer would use that as it's unnecessary under normal circumstances, especially considering the fact that the average end-user would never put such heavy load in the machine...
