I was recently forced to replace my trusty Canon 600EX-RTII flashes just days before an upcoming wedding. I decided to try something NEW: the Godox V860III flashes. My first time EVER using these flashes was on a REAL wedding day and in this video I want to share my experience using these flashes and let you know if I would recommend them for wedding photography!

I used a Godox V1 round head at a wedding last weekend. Took pics from 9 am until 10 pm. About 2600 pics, half of them with flash. At the end of the wedding, my Godox was still at 50% or more !

As a result, I returned my Canon EL-100 and now I very well may move to Godox. Thank you so much for your videos! My wife and I have grown our business and learned so much! Thank you!

I've used the Godox system for over the 8/9 years, and never looked back. They are so versatile, as they dont rely on "line of sight" like the early Nikon systems I had. You don't even need a seperate trigger unit. If you have two units, you can set one up as the transmitter and the other as a receiver. I remember, as an early adopter of Godox, using one Godox flash on the camera as a fill light, and the second flash was thrown on the wet floor in a clear freeze bag, hidden behind the wedding couple, and pointing back at me to illuminate all the water droplets around the couple. It was a complete game changer! I was tickled pink with the ease of getting elaborate shots. My friends in the business were shocked when I sold off My Nikon 910's. I didn't even hesitate in selling them! Gone in a flash!! (Forgive the pun🤣) At the time I could have 3 Godox units to the price of one Nikon flash. Plus, it was easy to shrug off if one got battered. I've stuck them in cars, trees, walls, hanging baskets, hung them from pagodas, and even had guests holding them. They've done all sorts!! And they're still used strong to this day. I did have two Ad200's, but found them slightly bulky and overkill for weddings, plus the head frenzel was fixed, so you couldn't twist the head if you've just stuffed them in a plant pot. The V1? Well maybe one day, but I don't see the importance as I never shoot directly at the couple. I'm usually bouncing light off some irregular surface or diffuser anyway. Enjoy!! You'll love the versatility

I'm so glad to hear your success story with Godox I live in Southern California. Several years before Covid, I decided to start fooling around with off camera flash. I had my 5D mk IV and a Canon "lower end" flash. I wanted a second flash, a transmitter and a remote. When I saw the costs involved, I almost changed my mind. A man at my local Camera Shop recommended Godox to me. He said, "It's made in China, it's good quality and it's affordable! The rest is "History!" I now own the V860II The V1 The AD200 Pro and The XPro mkII Trigger I'm not a Wedding Photographer but my son and I do random stuff like Cars, People and Events! Godox has never let me down

The V860iii has an ID function. It means that once set, even if another radio system is in the building or within range, and using the same channel they will only fire remotely if the ID number is the same. That means you never have to change channel again! But don’t use channel 1. Use a higher like 10-16. Also the hotshoe feet are designed so that if the hotshoe breaks off the flash you can replace it yourself (or Tyler) easily at home or at the wedding. Order a spare foot and have it in your bag as well as a spare battery and you’ll never have to worry.

That unfortunate occurrence was a blessing. Godox completely changed my reception work. All we've ever wanted was for technology to progress to the point where we forget about said tech and focused on what's happening in front of us. A single battery replaces (I think) around 12 AAs. Never overheats, never lags, no more figuring out which ocf is low, just shoot... love it.

I'm a huge fan of the Godox flashes for wireless control, they can't be beat for price-performance. I still use my Sony flash on-camera where I only need one flash, as the swivel head design is incredible, but for multi-flash shoots, it's Godox all the way. Glad you had a great experience, and made this video!

I used to use Canon and other brand flashes for years that took Double A batteries. I shoot weddings, real estate, and families. During the week I would shoot 15+ homes, and I would go through batteries so much. Finding the Godox with lithium batteries was a life changer! And they have definitely paid for themselves! Not just for my real estate photos but also for weddings. As long as they are fully charged, you will never run out. Recycle time is so much faster. Everything she said is true. Best flashes ever.

Thank you for sharing your experience. And I have to say again that nobody on KZbin has better video quality that you do. I have a few other comments. If you didn't already know it, your R6 will sync at 1/250th if you use electronic first curtain shutter. I have not found any reason not to use first curtain shutter but technically the bit depth of the resulting files is a tiny bit lower. Sometimes that extra step from 1/200 to 1/250 is needed. BTW, it won't flash at all in full electronic shutter. First curtain electronic shutter is a little quiter too but it's not like any setting is loud. I never used the depth of field preview button so I programmed it to take me directly to the external flash menu. At the time, I was using two different Godox triggers with different controls. The in-camera menu made operating them the same regardless of which camera/trigger I was using. It's probably faster though to use the menu on the flash. On the Godox triggers, there is a scan feature that will make the trigger search for the channels with the least interference. My on camera flash is the older Vers. II and doesn't have that feature but I think maybe the Vers. III you have does. I've only had to use that feature a couple of times on the triggers to find a better channel but in one case it went from not firing at all to working perfectly. The unproven theory I've read most often is that it's wifi that's is our enemy but many things use the same frequency now. Now that you have Godox lights, get a big ole AD400 or AD600 or at least an AD200 (my most used light). You can place it in a corner aimed against a high white wall or ceiling off to one side and softly and evenly light a pretty large space. The sweet spot for the subject is large that way. You can still use other lights from the back or sides as desired. Currently that's my favorite way to light the reception space in a barn venue, even when the bottom of the roof is grey metal. I often even "cheat" and run the main light on ETTL with good results. Thank you for all of effort you, Michael, and Ty put into making your videos.

11:25 - I am SO glad to hear that you, too, had connection/communication issues with your 600’s as well. About 6 months after purchasing my R6, I suddenly experienced communication issues w’ my 600EX-RT’s. It was hit or miss at first, then it turned into a complete system failure. I tried different channels/ID’s but nothing worked. (I even borrowed my friend’s 600’s and the same issues happened. I began to think it was my R6, because this never happened with my MarkIV). After taking my 600’s to Canon THREE SEPARATE TIMES, they found “nothing wrong” every single time, even though they replaced the Wi-Fi components and battery packs. I could no longer trust that the 600’s could do their job, so in absolute frustration and anger, I decided to purchase a different brand. I went with the Godox 860iii’s and I have not had a single problem! I LOVE THEM!!!

I agree with you Katelyn, Godox is a good choice financially. UNLESS you have to use the flashes outside at rain and mist or on sandy environment. Which i unfortunatelly have to 😭, when I shoot macro. Godox has no weather sealing what so ever! So I ended up destroying my Godox (wedding) flashes one after another, on harsh environment. So. I had to decide what to do, didn't wanted to go back to 600ex rt-ii. I decided to give the Canon EL-5 a shot, bought 3 of them. And that killed my credit card. But oh boy, what a dream flash, even better than the Godox V860! The menus and consistency is far better than 600ex-rt II and even better than Godox V860. And it needs less time than Godox needs, between shots. AND it's fully weather sealed! I'm in love! 😍

I found this video to be very interesting because I was recently in a similar situation. I shoot 30-40 weddings per year and have been using Nikon flashes my entire career, mostly SB910's in recent years (along with Pocket Wizard triggers). I recently completely switched to the Godox system and have been totally happy with the results. I have two v860III's and two AD200 Pros's, plus the XPro II wireless flash trigger. Everything Katelyn says here is accurate and why I love this system so much. The battery lasts seemingly forever and I’ve never come close to having to reach for my spare battery. The wireless triggering has been flawless both with the XPro II and when using one v860III flash to trigger another flash. And Katelyn was also correct that the menu system is very intuitive to learn, and it’s very easy to make power adjustments to your remote flashes on the fly at a fast paced wedding. I bought two brand new flashes plus the trigger for about the cost of one Nikon flash and I’m happier with the results and ease of use. Highly recommended!

Hi Rob. We're undecided between the AD200 and the v860IIIs. We shoot a lot of outdoor fashion-styled portraits and love to get those gorgeous HSS images in bright sun. We've been using a couple of Canon 600EX-RTs to get this look. Since you have both, do you have a recommendation? Either stick with a 3-flash setup where we have the option to combine 2 for more power or separate them for a different look OR get fewer more powerful units? TYIA
@robgrant7683
@robgrant7683 Жыл бұрын
@@HeidiDenney Hi Heidi. My approach might be a bit different since I'm shooting weddings so I'll just tell you how I use them and hopefully that will help. I use the v860iii's as my on camera flash and the AD200 Pros for off-camera. The AD200's have more power and the included option to quickly switch the flash head to bare bulb which I like a lot. So a typical reception setup for me is the v860iii on camera bounced over my shoulder and triggering and controlling the power of the AD200 on a lightstand across the room. If I need to overpower the sun I use two AD200's. For quick portraits after the ceremony it's one AD200 in a large soft box. Of course, with the XPro II trigger I could use all four lights off-camera but I rarely have time at a wedding for such an elaborate setup. If you don't have the XPro II trigger the v860iii's work great as a trigger or receiver. Hope that helped. Good luck!

Can you elaborate on this more? What should I set my flash and camera to?
@larrymitchell3502
@larrymitchell3502 Жыл бұрын
@@ja09nine Many good tutorials on YT. Many Godox speedlights allow HSS to be easily enabled / disabled via the rear buttons & back panel. HSS fires the flash *repeatedly* while the shutter sweeps a small slit across the sensor at high shutter speeds. That uses lots of battery. I've been doing still photography on assignment & against deadlines since the 1960's (really). Please believe that there Are No Easy Answers. How you set your camera & flash depend on a) the conditions under which you're shooting and b) the visual effect you intend to accomplish. Digital imagery is CHEAP compared to film. Practice requires more time and effort than $$$ - unlike the old days. Example: I use second curtain sync almost always (Godox lets you select 1st or 2d curtain). This has zero effect at normal sync speeds from about 1/30 sec to 1/200 or /250. When you go to long shutter speeds (dragging the shutter) existing light trails are BEHIND your subject (as we expect) instead of in front (as though your moving subject was going backwards. If one wants little or no contribution by ambient light, use higher sync speeds *not* requiring HSS from the flash. Depending on your camera, that should be 1/125 to 1/200 or /250. For more ambient contribution, use longer shutter speeds. PLAY WITH SETTINGS & chimp the results on your own time. Guy in NYC asks a cabbie "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" The cabbie yells "Practice, son, PRACTICE!" Ya know.... Photography, like surgery and cabinet making, is a CRAFT. You can read manuals & watch tutorials but you hafta *do it* to get good.

If you are with the flash on TTL and when shooting indoors, using a low ISO leads to an increase in the power of the flash and implicitly to a long recharge time.. If you check that the settings are one stop underexposed, your flash was doing its job and you didn't have the problem presented. I also suffered the problem.. without realizing it I was at F5.6 ... it's the same situation as at a low iso... I was nervous about the flash, although the problem was me!

As much as love(d) my Canon Speedlites, for some reason in last few years their wireless connectivity has tanked. Many users are complaining of this on Canon Community forums. I recently bought a Godox AD200, and have had zero problems with wireless connectivity. Now, I've got my eye on Godox speedlights. Good to see they worked well for you.

But that red stripe on the EL1!!😂 godox/flashpoint is a great ecosystem. There are misfires with OCF, but new batteries in the trigger helps make it minimal

Just in case, if you still have your old cannon flashes, just get the godox x1r-c. There receiver's that you can mount your canon flash to the use them in the godox 2.4 network( think there around 60 dollars AUD

I switched from Canon to Godox ages ago~ the Godox flashes work great on Canon bodies. The Godox flashes are not built as well as the Canon flashes in general and the Godox ones never have weather-seals but beyond that, they are near perfect replacements. Plus… you can add higher power flashes later, the AD200 Pros aren't much larger than hotshoe flashes but offer 200W of power and you can trigger those from your V860III

The Godox lights work well, they also have a good channel scanner if you have any interference issues. The only issue is that they tend to use higher transmit power than many other brands such as Canon, while it means better range and handling a higher noise floor, if you are using their wireless triggers and get within 6 inches of the flash, you may enjounter issues where it will fail to trigger reliably due to receiver overload. While their triggers can be placed in a lower transmit power mode, it is not as simple to change the transmit power as other settings. This is not really an issue for most scenarios, but if doing macro with multiple lights at a low power, you can run into wireless trigger issues at the normal transmit power in cases where you may have multiple flashes positioned on a table with you camera also positioned very close to the same table for macro work.

I do storm/lightning and wildlife photography mostly, maybe 2 wedding in the last 15 years, but my sons wedding was coming up and I needed to get a flash even though I had an older flash that had hss, ttl but used AA batteries, I opted after much research to get 2 of the v860 III, an Xpro-C and a AD200pro. I only ended up using one of the 860 III's on my R7 and it worked great. Main reason I invested in these were the battery options and not needing AA batteries. It pains me to say I haven't used them much since but am looking to getting into some portrait photography and will use them for that. I did have one of the 860 III modeling light not work but noticed about a week after the 1yr warranty was up, luckily the camera store I bought them from did a straight replacement and all is well now. There has been some issues with the Sony ones with the foot breaking off, I think because they're plastic, but replacement foots have been available and I think some are even metal now. I didn't realize the price of that new Canon flash was that much, I had heard they started shipping, but that is crazy what they are asking for one. Glad you had a good experience from them. I have heard it can be difficult to get them warrantied from Godox and most people just end up buying a new Speedlight.

Been using godox flashes for several years now. Regardless of power setting, after a certain number amount of flashes within a time period, the flash will take longer to recycle (heat protection mode). If you are using ttl and shooting many shots in a row (like a wedding) it can start to slow down. If you are at high iso and not working flash too hard, what i have done when this happens, is momentarily pull the battery out part way, and reinstall. This resets the overheat protection and the flash will work normally again. Also, another limitation with the godox flashes for specific canon cameras such as r6 and r5, you cant use ttl and hss at same time. For ex, flash on camera, and you are dialing in -2 flash compensation in bright conditions just for fill flash, the flash will always fire at full power no matter what your flash compensation is. The flash will work correctly if only using ttl, or if only using hss. Combine the two at same time results in full power flash every time. This is a known issue.

Katelyn, thank you so much for this video. I love your teaching/behind-the-scenes style and your smooth southern voice reminds me of the Alabama that I left to come down here to Brazil. BTW, my Canon 600EXRT was giving me some trouble (shooting full power every once in a while), so I bought the new Godox V860iii (it is R$1200 Brazilian). Just got it for Christmas and haven't even had a chance to take it out, but I loving it! Wish I could control other flash makers (like my YongNuo) with the Godox (you can, but only on manual S1). I can't even control my Canon flash with it, but that's ok because I plan on changing ALL my flashes for Godox. Hint: DO NOT BUY YONGNUO FLASHES, THEY BREAK EASILY AND ARE NOT WORTH IT!

I ditched Canon flashes along time ago due to the cost. I use 2 V860's ll and a V1 on my cameras. The 860's i use on stands at the reception with Magmod Bounce spheres on them. The V1 i use a bounce card on and use it for the control center of the 2 860's . You will find the Battery life on the 860's at 1/32 power could last you a wedding and a Half and the V1 the same although i do have a extra Battery for the V1. Enjoy

I have Canon 600 and 430 flashes and the radio transmission system now fails more often than it works. Canon offers no solution, but continues to promote their new and even more expensive flashes (that apparently are also having problems with the radio transmission system). Since Canon does not seem interested in addressing this problem, it may be time to ditch Canon flash and try Godox. Thanks for this review!

Hey Katelyn thank you for this video! I also have the Canon 600 EX II flash system (at your recommendation lol) and have recently had more & more issues with connectivity. It really depends on the venue or the DJ - it’s definitely some kind of wireless interference but it drives me INSANE when it happens. I’ve heard that Godoy flashes do not have this issue of dropping the link. I’m curious if you’ve had this issue at all now that you’ve had time to use them a little longer? Or can anyone else speak for this?

if you order them thru Adorama they support them as I had one come that did not work properly and adorama stepped up. They call it flashpoint but it is the same. Also for your OCF I used the ad 200s. Or 300s now for bigger venues.

Good video. I went to use my Canon 600EX and found 1 of the batteries had leaked inside the battery chamber ( I shouldn't have left the batteries inside but never had this issue before). Had a quote to get the flash unit fixed but it's approx £130. I'm considering changing to Godox.

Another bonus of the Li-Ion battery system is 1) weight (much lighter than 4 AA's, 2) last much longer than any form of AA (alkaline or rechargeable) and when the time comes to need to swap a battery in a hurry, you only have one to replace, rather than fumbling with 4 AA's being sure to insert them all in the correct orientation.

Thank you Katelyn for your amazing and practical videos. I just have one question regarding the battery. The original battery for V1 is VB26A as you know. But as a replacement, we can't find VB26A so we should go with VB26 which there's a bit different for the power. what do you think? should I go with VB26?
