Inspired by "structural color" found in nature, a team of engineers have developed a technique for producing materials that when stretched can transform their color, reflecting different wavelengths as the material is strained. (Learn more: news.mit.edu/2...)

Seems like it could easily be applicable to the field of strain identification in architecture and similar large structures like bridges. As it stands, the state of the art in these fields requires very fancy equipment that looks at extremely small changes of wavelength in the infrared band. It would be much simpler if a sample of this type of material, preloaded to near a dramatic color shift, we're applied, so basically any camera could be used and very simple software could count the number of pixels registering one color or the other.

One could even use some sort of hinged mount to act as a multiplier, so a small change over a longer distance would act on a relatively small color shifting patch, save material and increase resolution. Then again, I know absolutely nothing about this field.

@@SurajGrewal Deformation in bulk construction materials is almost never isotropic, and much much much much smaller changes in wavelength in the IR emissions of graphene impedded into a substrate have already been confirmed to be a viable method of detecting strain which is as good or better than the speckle coat method, which is the industry standard. Btw, being that electromagnetic spectrum spans from ultra short wavelength gamma rays to radio waves wavelengths that span unimaginable vastnesses of space, a "1% change in wavelength" is trivially easily detectable.

Interesting application. What of the shifted light reflecting off of the buildings? Would it be detrimental to the people, animals, and plants receiving this phase/frequency shifted light? Just some food for thought.

On the subject of color-coded force indication, this can be used to dummy-proof or emergency-validate any number of things. Imagine a first-aid kit with graphic instructions, a green check next to a green bandaged arm and a red X next to a red bandaged arm. Construction materials/monitoring equipment color-coded to stress levels. Exercise bands that indicate how much force you're exerting. Balloons that shift colors as they inflate and show purple before they pop. Just the first things I could think of, more ideas welcome. I wanna get people excited so I can afford to wear a shirt of this before I die.

Hey i am an up coming fashion designer and i wanted to do something different and unique so i researched about colour changing materials and if i could design one. Although making one is not something i can do but i might share the some ideas since i have studied science till school grad . I want to create high fashion garments using this material . Though the stretching sensitivity needed for this seems inconstuctible . But yes i am interested in learning more so that i can one day launch a new fashion series .

It can be transparent too. I wonder if it could be used for a new kind of display with an extremely wide colour gamut since it can produce a wide variety of wavelengths. If it could be used in a display, then you would only need 2 subpixels instead of 3 like we have with rgb. You could have 2 colour changing subpixels that can produce hue & saturation. Then you could change the brightness with an lcd or oled layer. I guess you would have to find a material that can be stretched when you apply a voltage to it.

Main question would be how you perform the mechanical work reliably and repeatably on a such a small scale that it would be applicable to a modern display. Frankly, I don't see this ever replacing consumer displays. If you made, say, a modern Jumbotron, I could see this being useful to change individual pixel colors, but again, making it mechanical and not digital tends to result in a lower lifespan of components, and often makes them more complicated to replace.

Another use could be to place tapes on structures or joints that are under tension. The change in color could warn about possible overstresses that can generate failures or fractures in the material or ruptures in the joint.

As a painter and lover of colour analysis (the one where you divide people into usually 12 different colour types for clothing advice purposes etc) I would SO love to see all things possible with structural colour becoming widely available all over the world, and hopefully I´m still alive by then!!! My personal wish is to have intelligent textile that takes on ANY colour of any of the colour palettes you want it to be! And some kind of communication device that allows me to tell the item, choose this! colour. Or even check out MY undertone and with this result give me the option to choose between every hue within my personal range (so hue, chroma, value). This would be Heaven! Also there is the ecological aspect that using regular colour is no longer needed. I got into the topic because I couldn´t find clothing harmonious with my overall colouring which is in the Light Spring palette. After years of "research" I found out my own colour type is so rare that Germany doesn´t even sell items for me!!! *rofl* Dyeing and painting with textile paint my own items now if needed, but even this is ... ad-ven-tu-rous!!! I´m not religious, but I bet Niklas Luhmann sits somewhere on his fluffy cloud and laughs his a off that this little woman learns that much about these things only because she couldn´t find some nice dresses or shirts to wear!!😂😂 😎😎

We only get a blink of an existence in an infinite universe which we'll never get to experience so I would like to imagine that the constant struggle of trying to enjoy such limited unique time mixed with the dread of an unavoidable demise could be made a little more fun if my clothes change colour when I walk and move

I’m not much of a book smarts kind of person but I wonder what would happen if you made nano holes in elastic and as you put on the elastic band, the nano holes change size allowing for the light spectrum to show a different color. Because nano holes shown under a light have different colors depending on the size of the holes.

If this effect could be reproduced in the cm & mm wave ranges, then it could be used to remotely monitor stress in composite materials. We are trying to do this with ferromagnetic wire inclusions, microwave scattering properties of which depend on the stress transferred to them. @dyk_team
