I attended a Knife Control Concepts seminar hosted by Aaron Jannetti and we explored how kickboxing can be used for knife defense.

Parrying, hitting and moving to blind side is some of the first things we learn in kali. It takes time to get the footwork right, but it’s a great concept.

sure thing! The dude was first trying to go after a lone female. I ran up and yelled to get her attention to what was behind her. She immediately ran away. the dude turned and said stuff and came at me now in frustration. I took off my apron and wrapped my left arm. I never tried to disarm him. When He would slash I would put that arm out... Jabbing his arm, fist. I also hammer fisted his arm. Sometimes 2 strikes for his one. When he would jab I backed up. I just watched his arm and distance. His right arm got tired and red from being hit and knocked down so many times. Then I could grab it with both hands and started kneeing his upper thigh. He went down. I pointed his knife towards him, he dropped it. By then, the cops were there and grabbed both of us up and cuffed us both. Luckily many people were watching and told the cops the truth. I was let go. Under the apron tho I had a few red lines on my arm.

@@BMO_CreativeThat sounds like a harrowing encounter, which went on for quite sometime, possibly longer than you expected? I commend your bravery and thinking in such a situation. How did you know what to do and what went through your mind at the time (if you remember)? It's fine to practice self-defense in a gym, but I think we should learn as much possible from actual stabbings. I'm surprised more "experts" don't emphasize this.

Well, I honestly expected the guy to run off when I shouted at the lady to look behind her and started yelling "hey buddy! I see you!" Ya... he instead charged at me. Entire "fight" was maybe 20 to 30 seconds really... felt like WAY longer. I just thought I needed some way to keep from getting cut. Tom Thumb made us wear aprons, so it just made sense at the time. Now that I'm older, I think I would have used my belt instead. The leather would have been much better.

Thanks for such an informative video with clear demonstration with explanation. It would be useful to see some effective knife defense take-downs for self-defense, as if you can put the attacker on the ground ASAP then they can't stab you while you run away...

@@CombatSelfDefense once saw a police cam of a man with a knife charging at cops. I could see how a well timed teep would have prevented him from being gunned down. Also saw video of two gangstes with knives attacking a guy,and was able to keep them at distance by kicking ,almost disarming one,before they got smart and cut is leg. I mean a front kick like the Savate/JKD style,non telegraphed,with sole of feet,and quickly retracted,from front leg. Kinda like a jab.

@@MasakanSolaris Don't assume. In Thai law, if you have a chance to negate a fight, but choose to be involved in the fight, it's not self defense, but a compliance to the brawl. I know muaythai, which kick much harder than kick boxing. Muaythai also include clinching, knees and elbows.

Being the better grappler, in a mutual grapple, is the *easiest* part of knife defense. It is so confusing to me that he grazes over the rest of it. Surviving the knife fight at distance, and managing the situation to *get* to the mutual grapple, is infinitely harder, and if you are teaching 'knife defense', you shouldn't spend all your time on the easy part, you should spend time on the hard part. I strongly disagree with the order of teaching here, it feels very backwards. I also strongly disagree with the emphasis on clinching, that is by far the easiest part to teach and learn, and should be secondary at best. Hope to see more discussions, thanks.

You may have missed the part where I asked him directly how I can utilize striking. It wouldn’t have been a very good discussion if he said “the best way to utilize striking is by grappling”
@WaLor-ld3wg
@WaLor-ld3wg 4 ай бұрын
Grappling is effective simply because it's safer, so you can use your skills without having to worry so much about damage and without having to cause much damage while still making the technique look legitimate. But in a real combat situation, you only have so much time to clinch and wrestle until your opponent attempts to break free and strike again. Meaning that you have to redirect your pressure every time and if you fail to establish fully control, your opponent will open the clinch up and you'll be in danger like as if you didn't even clinch in the first place. Meaning that even if you grapple, you'll still be in the same danger just as if you were to strike, it's just in a different perspective.

@@WaLor-ld3wg that is why I said the "mutual grapple" is the easiest part. Trying to grapple a knife when the knife person doesn't want to grapple is much harder than if they are participating in the grapple. My point is these new kids on the knife defense block are too obsessed with standing grappling ties, that is the easy part. The hard part is getting there.

Sorry if that sounds disappointing, but man %95 of the time there are nothing you can do with your kb against a knife. Its a weapon and to deal with a weapon you need another weapon. All of that mumbo jumbo is gonna get you hurt!

So your advice if someone attacks you with a knife and you’re unarmed is…do nothing?
@husamal-dinbeybars3013
@husamal-dinbeybars3013 4 ай бұрын
@@CombatSelfDefense No, but I meant sometimes unrealistic training gives some false confidence about the ability to do something. I don't think KB was meant to tackle the unarmed vs armed situations. The problem is that your weapons (legs and arms) themselves are targets for the knife. You can try sparing with someone using rubber knife and see how things go, and remember when a real knife is presented, things will be 10x scary :) Sorry for lengthy response, but I guess I meant that with knife, you need a knife (or some other weapon). :)
