You're right! I'm not a violin player, just tried to study the violin as an adult, but I'm a former dancer, very passionate about music, and know most pieces just as a listener...and I actually misstook the first notes for Bach Chaconne, and only after a few seconds heard the Mendelssohn motive..

I noticed the similarities before I knew of Mendelssohn's efforts to revive the work of Bach. Initially, I thought I was reading too much into it, and it was probably just a coincidence. There appear to be quite a few of these nods from one composer to another. Pretty sure I'm hearing a nod to Beethoven in the Brahms violin concerto as well.

I’m going to see Hillary Hahn next Sunday in St Louis playing this concerto. I have only found Classical music in the past few years. I have fallen in love with violin concertos. I first saw a documentary on Janine Jansen recording Beethoven op 61. She was so young and beautiful. I saw and felt the passion she had for the music. I also saw Hillary Hahn on a 2Set video also a vibrant and beautiful young woman both so pleasant and warm. I’m 75 years old and in poor health. I listen to classical music for a few hours every day. I’m so lucky to have checked Hillary’s website and saw this concert coming to St Louis I don’t go to the city because it’s a dangerous city. But I going and bringing my 13 year old grandson and my daughter. I’m so happy I love the music. I can’t go to sleep listening as the music captures my mind. There is so much available to watch and listen to on KZbin. I think God sent her here for me. I’m so blessed for this opportunity. Sorry I’m old and rambling. 😊

I was there last night! (9/23) It was a great program, and Hilary was fantastic, as always. I’ve also seen her a few times in Chicago, and it is always so notable and impressive how she gives every note its due with clear, precise playing. I’m sure your grandson will enjoy the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The orchestra had fun with that one!

@@M_SC Sorry I didn’t know that I could see responses to my post. I have to tell you that that concert was wonderful it was a real life bucket list experience. Hillary has changed in some ways. Her playing was excellent and her stage presence seems to be more relaxed. She is connected to the orchestra. She does this thing where she turns and looks at a section and gives them a nod of approval. I enjoyed it so much I was well done the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is very strong and the venue was great. Hillary seems more relaxed moves differently more fluid. My grandson was impressed with the volume that an orchestra can produce. That’s a thing that I remember from my first Symphony Orchestra concert some 60+ years ago. We all had a great experience.

As a violinist, I can confirm that string crossings in sections like this are sooooo much easier than they sound. Still dobe really well tho. When I was doing this I had trouble getting staccato on each note, but she does it flawlessly.
