Update!!: I tried this plastic bag method (using same red colour for extra luck) and in 5 days, fuzzy ROOTS are growing. The string is still very healthy with no leaf rot which I thought would happen as some water droplets were touching the leaf directly. Thank you so much for sharing this idea with us. You are so helpful!

Hi-when layering in a second pot, when and how do you separate the two plants, or are they doubled up forever?
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 2 жыл бұрын
I make sure the new pot is fully rooted then i just snip as close to the first rooted spot on each strand as possible. You can basically chop anywhere once the strands are rooted, only .. the parts before the first rooted spot will dry off and die.

Have you tried the butterfly method or any other propagation method for the string of hearts? How do those methods compare to this method?
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 3 жыл бұрын
Yes i have but somehow the butterfly method never works for me 😅 the plastic bag method is the best becos you can literally see the roots grow. They produce roots in about 3 days! I also like the layering method esp for the variegated form. Best success rate, even better than the plastic bag when it comes to the variegated form

I have questions about the potting mix. It says equal parts of coco chips, charcoal, and pumice and coco peat to bind the mix. So would this be one cup of eat potting media? So 1 cocochips, 1 charcoal, 1 pumice and 1 cocopeat? My second question about the mix is can I use an orchid mix (which has bark) in place of the cocochips? And can I use perlite instead of the pumice? I am going to try your bag technique today I’ll update you! Thanks for your helpful videos!
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 3 жыл бұрын
Equal mix as in 25% each if there are 4 ingredients to fill your pot. Usually it is an estimate. A bit more of this or that wont make a difference. You can basically use anything. Orchid mix is a good mix. The ultimate result is you want something porous and drains easily. Also depends a lot on your environment. If there is no ventilation, no sun then you probably hv to use a lot more draining elements eg pumise, volcanic rock, perlite etc. And less on the water retaining elements like peat, cocochip or potting mix.

Hmmm ... i have no idea about succulents. Seems a bit 'scary' to put a whole plant into plastic bag. Might just rot the succulent leaves. But since it's not growing anyways, you can try.

Your two methods today have been remarkably easy and straight forward and I appreciate it that you shared This truly it's a gift of love and you have a green thumb for 2.!!!LOL I also have purchased another recommendation for potting soil would love your feedback to mix perlite in three parts 1/3 perlite to 1/3 moisture control soil to 1/3 on a succulent Cactus mix what do you think about that it seems like that would also give some good drainage again thank you keep up the good work and if there's any special place the cuttings need to be done in between please update this otherwise I'm going to try my hand at this today! @@WinnieLuthienThye I have a question, as well, if you don't mind: my string of hearts came really young and has just been growing on a single strand. Will it start to create more strands or do I need to propagate it in the same pot to fill it out?
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 5 жыл бұрын
@@PaxxTan hi Paxx, after a while branches will appear at certain nodes on your single strand, but most likely the base of the strand will remain as a single piece. To encourage a bushier growth, i would normally twirl the strand back into the surface of the pot and pin it down at certain junctions so that as many nodes would touch the surface of the soil to encourage rooting from those nodes. In this sense yes you are in fact propagating your strand in its own pot. Mist the surface slightly everyday to increase the humidity on the top of the pot (but not too much that it would rot the tuber from your main strand) . Misting the top will encourage the roots to grow out faster. Once roots start growing, you will have a high chance of a new stem appearing where the rooting has occured. So if you manage to root 3 nodes into the substrate, you have 3 potential growth points. That way your plant can become bushier in time. Hope this helps 😊

How often should you water it
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye Жыл бұрын
Depends on the weather. If it is during months where the sun is shining into my balcony, then i go as much as misting it everyday and watering once in 3 days. If its the rainy season, then i will only water when the soil is dry. Probably once a week or longer.

@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 3 жыл бұрын
Hi im in Malaysia. This media is what's working best for my SoH. It is very porous so it drains immediately when i water. I can water my SoH every other day in the hot months and they actually need it. In the rainy months i cut watering down to 3 or 4 days once. The plant needs to hv sun and a very ventilated space.

I think you can just lay the pearls on soil and the little pearls will actually grow roots so will the strand of pearls but with all of my succulents that have dropped leaves or when I'm shopping I find leaves that are falling off succulents and I take them home I just lay them on top of a plant that probably doesn't get watered a lot and have salty soil and almost all of these little succulent leaves grow in fact I noticed I had some string of bananas that the leaves fell off and I just put them on top of my ginger plant soil and I didn't think they would grow because that plant stays fairly moist and lo and behold today there was a root coming out of each of the little leaves that fell off of the string of bananas. Now I'm sure it's going to take a long time for a plant to grow out of that but it's just fun to watch

Also if you go to Maria's Garden on her Channel she deals with succulents and her main succulent that she talks about a lot is desert roses but she uses a lot of cinnamon and she always put cinnamon on top of the soil and onto her cuttings before she plants them so maybe using cinnamon would help when you're trying to grow these cuttings hard to explain you got to go to her site and find out. She is a grower she grows everything herself and she lives in Punta Gorda Florida and it's very humid there so if you want to learn more about growing succulents in a humid climate go watch Maria on Maria's Garden. She's funny sometimes she has flowers hanging from her hair even sometimes real plants but she's excellent and the knowledge she has about succulents how to grow them how to expand your collection exedra

Thats an interesting thought. I say that becos SoP is very difficult to grow in Malaysia, let alone propagate. Perhaps you could try it out ... im curious to know if this works for SoP or not.

@@WinnieLuthienThye well that was a quick reply! I'm going to try it this week because something happened to my two pots of string of pearls so I had to do cuttings and I put them in pots the way a lady in Florida says to do them. Her channels name is Maria's Garden. She's a wonderful lady that is started her own business years ago to support her daughter and herself. She's a legal immigrant from Mexico. The business she started was a second hand shop and now she's sold that and has a property where that is located in somebody else runs it and she now has a huge area to grow succulents and sell them. She Specializes and desert roses. She just recently showed how to propagate String of Pearls. But I may take a few strands and put them in a plastic bag along with a few strands of string of dolphins and see what happens I'll let you know I also add subscribed to your channel but my KZbin channel somehow or other with my son using my phone got listed with my other email address I don't use and I've got to switch it around. So if you don't hear from me make another call men here and it'll go to my email address and I'll get back in touch

Amazing!! How are they doing? Water propagation doesnt work for me here. Maybe just too hot and wet here. They tend to rot when place in water.

@@WinnieLuthienThye Well the roots are slowly starting. I think I like your way much better and when I can clip my layered plants apart I will try to do it your way with the bag. Roots are only about half an inch long and they have been in water for a couple weeks. So slow. It is winter here now so quite chilly.

@@WinnieLuthienThye Well crazy thing has happened to the wandering Jew propagation. I put my water propagation tall vase containers into a tote that is holding my outside pond plants over winter that can not winter outside. Holed drilled in lid So the bottom of the tote is filled with water maybe half way up. The wandering jew with just broken off ends down into the vases sprouted roots at every leaf node all the way up the step and they grew about 1 1/2 inches long in less then 2 weeks. Also a hoya tip I broke off when cleaning it. OOPS has time roots popping out in just 2 weeks. This is the way to get things to root fast. I have a grow light sitting outside the side of the clearish tote and it is quite warm inside. Probably helps the rooting. I potted the wandering jew up by cutting off the leaves leaving only a few inches at the tip end and laying the stems with roots don on top of the potting soil. Two days ago and so far no drooping. The upside is this tote allowing humidity to escape the top some is under my plant shelf so all plants on the shelf are enjoying the humidity. Thinking now I should move things around so the most humidity loving plants are on that shelf.

do you keep the plastic away from the sunlight?
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes I do. Keep it in the shade, because the rule of thumb is - shade encourages root growth and light encourages leaf growth. When they are in the plastic bag, it is roots I want the cuttings to grow.

Have you tried this with "Ziploc" type of bags? Thanks for sharing this method!
@WinnieLuthienThye
@WinnieLuthienThye 4 жыл бұрын
my pleasure! No I have not tried with a ziploc bag. From experience, I find roots grow faster when there is less light. Light usually encourages leaves, and shade encourages root growth. That is why I chose to put it in an opaque bag, where light wont get into it so much. But, if you want to use a ziploc (the ones i have seen are transparent) then put the bag in a shaded place to encourage faster root growth.

@@WinnieLuthienThye thanks! That's a great tip. I have some already in a ziploc bag, I'll put then in the shade. Thanks again!
