Great video! Nick here on YT taught alot of us the "taco test". The squeezing of the leaves. But honestly most of the time I can tell because the soil looks extra dry and also the pot is super light when I lift it. I personally have to bottom water most of my string of plants otherwise they will get overwatered. I just got the VSOH' s a few months ago so I'm just trying to get the hang of it. But the regular SOH's is easy as pie, thankfully.

it's always worth trying but I wouldn't hold my breath. I just put it in see water or a bag with moss and see what happens. usually you want to take health strands for propagation

if its really small i would probably keep it indoors in a space that gets a lot of light, so like 800 foot candles would work. I am just worried that too much direct sunlight will burn your tiny plant. Good luck

Do the newer leaves feel more flexible as they are growing? I have some firm leaves and some more flexible ones that are lighter in color.
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
The lighter color comes with higher light which is totally healthy. I find the leaves closer to the roots to be firmer and over time the newer leaves will plump up as they get fatter

This is very helpful and informative. I had a very long healthy string of hearts and I think I forgot to water it and it almost died on me, I had to propagate all of it in water and every time I've tried putting it on soil it dies and now it's just in water for 8 months 😔 I just put some again in soil so this video is very helpful and I'll try my best not to overwater or underwater my SOH 👍 Thanks for sharing your tips 💚🌿

Maybe take a couple of leaves and propagate it using the method in my propagation video? You lay the nodes on top of soil instead of putting them in water. Good Luck
@diannenaworensky66982 жыл бұрын
Propagating in moss IS closer to soil than water. I either use moss or soil then when you move it there is an easier transition

I've been told that flimsy wrinkly leaves means it needs more water, and yellow leaves means over watering. my plant has both. do u think I'm over or under watering?

that sounds right, you may have over watered it at one point and its currently under watered? this can easily happen

Hi there! My string of hearts has been growing so long, yet the new leaves just getting smaller and smaller. Some of the leaves even lost the heart shape. Do you know what could be the reason? Thank you (:
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
i feel like they get bigger over time thats why you will notice that larger leaves aka older leaves at the top. I find that underwatering will cause the leaves to deform?
@HanTMNguyen4 жыл бұрын
@@BotanicalWoman I live in Southern California and I have my string of hearts pot hanging outside (facing West). I was worrying that the soil would dried out quickly since I have it outside, therefore I watered it once a week, sometimes even twice a week. I'm not sure if that is underwatering? Also my string of hearts have been having a bunch of flowers and the seeds tube(?) for almost 6 months straight that I thought there was something wrong. XD

Hi! What ratio do you do for your watering when you use fertilizer, hydrogen peroxide and tap water?
I had a soh that I brought back from the brink of death by water propagating several strands. They’ve been doing great like this for several months however I’m now scared to replant them because I know how hard of a time I had taking care of them in soil. Any suggestions?
@BotanicalWoman3 жыл бұрын
if you have a very extensive root system already in water, I would just keep growing it in water because water roots are different from soil roots and those will rot in soil. If you really want to grow in soil i I suggest propagating new cuttings in water if you like but once you see roots emerge, move it to soil. here is another vid i did on SOH prop kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIjaZIh4jrCjmrM Good LUCK

Whoa... My Orange River SOH behaves VERY differently. To start, it’s much darker green and the mature leaves are almost leathery. It seems to like some direct sunlight outside in the morning. On multiple occasions, I’ve even accidentally left it outside overnight (where it dropped to the high 30’s). Subsequently, it also does great indoors, under a grow light or a couple feet from an East facing window. (I was moving things around for awhile to control a fungus gnat outbreak.) It also grows 2-3x faster than my regular SOH and VSOH. Perhaps I happen to have mutant superhero form of this plant??? 🤷♀️

I got my first variegated string of hearts. Its just 1 long string and the strand in between has dried out pretty bad. But seems like it’s growing okay at the bottom.. Should I leave the strand or should I cut the dry strand and propagate the lower part? Need your help please 🙂
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
like a pony tail, i would pin the lower part on the soil so that it will root. so you can get a fuller plant. don't let it dry out to too much, once the top leaves has a little give, i would water it. good luck

The white should come back if you give it less light. The pink is a stress response to extra light.

once the hearts fall off they will not grow back but you can try to propagate the individual leaves (low success rate but still fun). for prop tips: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIjaZIh4jrCjmrM

What does it mean when the leaves are yellowing and dropping, but also wrinkly and getting smaller?
@BotanicalWoman3 жыл бұрын
depends but sounds like root rot? if the older leaves drop thats means its too dry but they don't yellow they just dry up. if younger,/newer leaves are struggling that is usually overwatering, so you maybe want to check the roots. smaller? they actually grow over time. does the soil have enough drainage? I recommend using a succulent mix and does the pot have several drainage holes?
@DollsChvrch4 жыл бұрын
I used a water meter or whatever it’s called in my string of hearts and it’s like between 0-1 should I water it? Some of the leaves seem to be turning yellow but I just got it in the mail a week ago now and it was still moist when I got it so I feel like if it’s over water it’s from the nursery that sold it to me because I haven’t even watered it yet. I’ve read it likes to get fully dry?
@BotanicalWoman4 жыл бұрын
What do the leaves closest to the roots feel like? are they soft? can you fold them into a taco? or are they firm? if they are still firm, they don't need water yet.

I saved the VERY last leaf of my SOH, I was sure it would die haha, I actually put it in my frogs vivarium at about 70% humidity and thankfully that one leaf has now multiplied into about 10 small leaves over the course of 3 months. I have found that keeping it in an incredibly small pot has helped me not overwater it, I just spray the soil directly with a few squirts of water once a week so the roots can take in some moisture but any extra moisture will evaporate right off. still working out how to take care of the bigger plants though 😂 I think maybe they’re just not suited to pots haha
@BotanicalWoman3 жыл бұрын
interesting. i have made several of these guys now and i treat them like succulents, so let it dry completely and water thoroughly so the problem i run into most is losing the older leaves because i am letting is dry too long. the other thing that is really important is to use a medium that is very well draining, like succulent mix. otherwise I find these guys to be pretty easy. they hate wet feet!
